I saw a political cartoon about this topic the other day. Actually, I'll go find it right now. It's on "Girl vs. Robot" -- http://www.girlvsrobot.com/?p=364 (Posted July 9th, 2009 and titled "#041 Post-Racial America") (posted to Swimming Pool Racism In Philadelphia)
Here's another bonus - Kirrily Robert gave a keynote at O'Reilly Open Source Convention last Thursday on how to include more women in open source programming. http://blip.tv/file/2400597 (video of keynote) http://infotrope.net/blog/2009/07/25/standing-out-in-the-crowd-my-oscon-keynote/ (presentation as blog post) Feministing, meet open source technology. When I was in Japan (2001) men referred to hostesses as if they were prostitutes. As I said, I have no idea if that reputation fits reality to any degree. (posted to What We Missed.)
Calling Japanese hostesses prostitutes is just part of the stigma mentioned in things you can read or watch online. If a client wants sexual acts, there are places to go other than drinking establishments where they dump hundreds or thousands (posted to What We Missed.)
hostesses 3 times? I don't get it. Help? (posted to What We Missed.)
I was a hostess- and this article doesn't make any mention whatsoever of what an incredibly demeaning job it really is. You are basically a decoration. You can't say what you really think. You have to giggle and look stupid. (posted to What We Missed.)
Oh by the way- hostessing often does involve prostitution, especially in KABUKICHO- the nice clubs are in Ginza and Yurakucho. Anyone who works in Shinjuku is involved in sex in some way- that's what the area is all about. Gov. (posted to What We Missed.)
