A decent book with analysis of these kind of school performances is Dude, You're a Fag by C.J. Pascoe. It's an ethnography of masculinity in a California high school, and Pascoe addresses the disparities between what is allowed in sexualized (posted to Boarding School: Chauvinist As Ever?)
