Feminist Action: Grassroots activism for the homeless

Dear femininist readers –

As I sit here at a coffee shop, hot tea in hand and sporting a sweater, there are many others who are out in the cold, with no place to go, and no jackets and blankets to keep them warm at night.

Night homeless persons who are women often suffer more than men is no a secret to you all, and last year, when I started a program to donate used coats and blankets to homeless persons, people responded in kind, donating more than 50 coats to keep them warm during the winter.

This year, the winter is coming early, and while we cannot change the lives of every homeless person, I know that us working together will make their lives a little bit better, even if it merely means keeping them warm.

While this election may be about change, changes can come very slowly, and until the day it comes, the responsibily of taking care of the less fortunate falls into our hands – the activists who are out there everyday helping people and listening to their stories.

So here’s what I need if you: if you have a used coat or blanket that you would like to donate, please contact me so I can give you the address to send the coats to. Also, if you can tell your friends, families, classmates, lovers and fellow activists, I will forever thank you.

All coats and blankets will be washed, dry-cleaned and then passed out to homeless persons.

If you’re interested in starting this in your own community, you may also contact me. I can either be reached by email at mloix002@odu.edu or cell phone at 757 818 7957.

For equality –

Marc
