I'd like to heartily recommend Tony Horwitz's book Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches From the Unfinished Civil War -- in the context of this thread, specifically for its chapter on American Civil War re-enactors. Those Horwitz dealt with were accuracy-minded (posted to The most fascinating thing I found on the internet this week...)
I'm thinking here of Mary Sues, the idealized-self-insert characters in fan fiction, and wondering -- when does Mary Sue's identity change? From very many younger fanwriters, I've seen self-insert characters that can be summed up in the phrase I Wish (posted to Encouraging Adventure)

Yes I think depending on anyone to live for you is just depressing. I agree about domestic strife. If I were a husband I would feel totally betrayed if I married a really smart, ambitious women who jacked it all (posted to Encouraging Adventure)
My brother participates in Civil War reenactments. My previous understanding of historical reenactment was based entirely on friends in the Society for Creative Anachronism and Renaissance fairs. Why is something male dominated automatically seen as a negative? If you didn't enjoy the film that's fine, but I take issue with the fact you're making a big deal out of the lack of female characters on it's own (posted to Encouraging Adventure)
