Can someone please tell me what's going on with women and poop lately? Seriously, it feels like every commercial I see is the sisterhood of the fucked up intestinal tract. Let me be clear. I have no problem with openness surrounding women and bodily functions - it's certainly better than the sexist women-don't-poop thing or the hilarity that dudes find in women shitting (because it means we're like actual people). But I find commercials like these, well...hard to stomach.
Ladies' insides = The Perfect Storm. I'm fairly sure that men have stomach-related problems, so why is nearly every shit-product marketed solely to women?
Take the most famous of crap-making yogurts, Activia. (Said much classier on the Activia website, which notes the yogurt will "reduce long intestinal transit time.")

We often celebrate the brilliance of Sarah Haskins on this blog. Her Target Women series on Current TV is just one more example of how women are, indeed, funny. I feel stupid even writing that sentence, but apparently the mainstream media has some doubts--evidenced most obviously by Christopher Hitchens' January 2007 Vanity Fair piece Why Women Aren't Funny.
I have a few friends who work in the comedy business and I've had disturbing conversations as of late about the gender dynamic therein. For example, did you know that there is not one single female writer at The Daily Show? Not one. (Samantha Bee is a correspondent, and does some writing, but is not an official writer. Kristin Schall is only an occasional contributor.) When I think about how many women adore Jon Stewart, myself included, it makes me really sad to know that we're not also pushing him and Comedy Central, more broadly, to hire more women.
Another friend told me that she auditioned for a stand-up series on Comedy Central recently and they told her that they will only sign five women maximum. Not minimum. Maximum. And this was a show that needed something like 30 comedians total.
She also reports that some of the late night hosts, like Jimmy Kimmel, don't even audition women. If he's avoiding ladies because they remind him of his ex, Sarah Silverman, then that's just silly. What other reason could he possibly have?
This is beyond annoying. This is straight up, unfunny sexism. So what the hell are we going to do about it?

I know, I know. Everyone is talking about Twitter. So many people are tweeting and talking about tweeting, it's nearly jumped the shark. But I don't care - I love it. Mostly because I love following fabulous feminists. I can see what Sarah Haskins is up to, or what Latifa Lyles (running for NOW president!) is thinking. I can even follow the bloggers I like.

Kay Steiger recently interviewed Sarah Haskins, who revealed she has sold a screenplay!
"I just sold a screenplay with my writing partner, a friend I knew from college. That's very exciting. The protagonists are two girls," she said. "That's been awesome and hopefully it'll get made. That's sort of the Hollywood thing and where you don't know if any of that will ever happen."
Here's hoping it does.
