What We Missed
Today is Veteran's Day. A quote from Obama's speech today summed up my sentiments on this holiday: "That is why we fight" today, the president said. "In hopes of a day when we no longer need to." (Via LA Times)
The repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell is likely to be part of next year's defense bill.
In These Times has a piece about how unmarried women are suffering in the recession.
For the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street, The Daily Beast has a compilation of 25 classic moments. Below is one of my personal favorites:
Just something to brighten up your Wednesday.

Melissa McEwan at Shakesville received an EPIC anti-abortion screed: http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com/2009/11/i-get-letters_11.html
All sorts of feministy bits to dissect in this story:

with some more narrative ehre:
http://www.columbiaspectator.com/2009/11/10/associate-professor-assaults-arts-school-employee-local-bar
Basically, a black professor up at Columbia was getting drinks in the neighborhood and got into a fight with a white female Columbia employee about White Privilege and punched her in the eye. Then some other guy said "hey, don't hit women!" and the professor smacked the guy's glasses off his face. Then the woman felt some unnamed pressure not to "make waves" about it.
ZOMG! Critical Race Theory vs. Violence Against Women! WHAT'S A FEMINIST TO DO? Is the University somehow responsible for all of this? MY GUESS IS YES.
The Prof's a jerk and should be fired. Critical theory is BS.
"Critical theory is BS."
Please tell me you're joking. You do realize that critical theory is a foundation of the entire feminist movement, right?
Critical theory is a foundation of certain feminist theories and ideologies. However, there are feminist theories that do not rely on critical theory that are equally legitimate.
Yes, I hope some time 'we' no longer need to fight... yet, I don't think starting preemptive wars (or most wars the US started since after WWII) is the kind of fighting that will ever get 'us' there, or honor the life of the soldiers that fight, and the memory of the fallen. In general, I don't think violence can be a means to an end of non-violence.
On a deconstructive mood, one could say that if the fight manages to achieve some kind of world hegemony, then it's true that further fighting would not be necessary, but that wouldn't be a good thing... On the other hand, that's probably not what Obama meant.
Sorry for ruining the bright Muppets note, it's just that I cannot wrap my head around the fact that the courts just upheld
rendition...
Thanks for featuring In These Times today- I worked there over the summer as a publishing intern, and they are great people. Independent media is dying and they need all the help, exposure and funding they can get ! Very much appreciated feministing :-)
