"Meet the Press" takes a serious at women's progress in America including a report by Maria Shriver. Some stats and facts from the program:
-40% of women now outearn their husbands (not sure whether they factored in non-earning wives in this average)
-2/3 of American women are either breadwinner or co-breadwinner
-by far the most popular answer from WOMEN AND MEN when asked what would improve their working life was not better childcare, more pay or shorter hours but simply, 'more flexible hours'
-women now make up 49.9% of the US paid workforce (they did not say if this means by hours worked, by productivity per head, or by number of workers), up from 29% in the 1970's
(I want to know what % of wealth women are generating if doing half the paid work and the vast bulk of unpaid. I now will read the report to see if I can find out!)

Cartoon Wrongs: Looking at how cartoons support rape. It's all fun and games cause it isn't real right?
Renee, I just wanted to say how much I appreciated your post on disability and abelism. I've gone through something similar - not being able to fulfill some of the gender roles expected of men because of a disability I acquired really opened my eyes to the ways that society is structured and the consequences of not being able to fulfill those roles. It's one of the several experiences that actually drew me to feminism.
I too often use language derived from disabilities. For example, if someone were to say "The coverage of disability and gender issues on feministing has been completely lame over 3 years that I've been coming here" it would not bother me - I'd say right on. But then I hesitate to mention that because I know others are bothered by that language.
In any case, I just want to let you know that your post was reaching people, and I appreciated the opportunity to read about your thoughts and experiences.
But I don't want to be sexy!!!: me whining about available costumes for women.

I read this article and just clicked on it to see the comments. The comments prompted a reply from me and then it seemed that I was getting so jumped on just by asserting that women being forced into submission was wrong!!! My comments were taken way out of context and it made me attempt to clarify. Why is it that women asserting themselves is seen as so detrimental to a family?
I am StudentGirl by the way. Some of the people's judgment on me was kind of degrading I felt.
wow those comments were pretty awful. i always love how those sorts of people are all "oh, you're married and you believe women should be subservient? does that mean your husband is totally miserable?"
i think this is particularly insulting to men as well, since it assumes that men aren't supposed to care about the autonomy of women.
I know...I loved how they insinuated that since I'm a feminist and my career/school is imporant to me that he must be so miserable!!! Geez my husband can take care of himself, he doesn't need me to "take care of him". Just because I have my own goals/career doesn't mean I love him any less than a wife who stays home.
oops, i meant "shouldn't." but yeah, i still can't even believe that there are people out there that think the woman should stay home and take care of the husband. especially in this day and age where two people have to work to get by. a woman with her own goals and career doesn't affect how much she loves her partner. geez.
In fact someone even said that my husband must be a girl with male parts simply because he is a feminist and enjoys talking with me!!! And assumes he is a "lapdog to my empowered success". Where do they come up with this shit? Has no one heard of an EQUAL relationship? You know, where both parties can be empowered and appreciate each others success????
WTF. I'm so glad I'm a feminist and my husband is too.
wth?? wow. that sort of leap in "logic" escapes me. i mean, really?? what is so hard to believe about a man who respects women and believes in equality??
Escapes me too...I guess for some people it just doesn't seem possible that a man could value his wife/girlfriend and appreciate and love her success and drive. The comments make my blood boil but I try to just ignore them but it's hard when I know that so many women will be put down because of people like this who feel this way about women.
I've responded as well. I really can't believe how many of those people believe that gender is the only trait which should be considered in deciding how a marriage should be. Forget who's better at various things, or even who wants to do what. Their way is the One True Way. Ugh.
Steps to prevent rape poster is my response to rape prevention posters which blame victims or put the responsibility for prevention onto them.
PA superior court overturns troubling ruling on alleged victim competency looks at a lower court ruling which would have required an adult victim to undergo an involuntary psychiatric evaluation because the victim had been on prescription drugs and drinking the night she was raped.
Blunders and excellence in sexual assault cases looks at serial rape cases where police mistakes allowed more victims to be harmed and compares that to another serial rape case where victims praise the police.
The Washington Post reported that H1N1 seems to be disproportionally affecting younger women:
"Although it has been well publicized that pregnant women appear to be at increased risk, some evidence has started to suggest that being female may itself be a risk factor, for reasons that remain unclear.
"There's no question that women, and particularly young women, are getting hit disproportionately," said Kumar. He noted that women tend to have more fat tissue, which can help stimulate a dangerous inflammatory response to infections."

I just watched Searching for Angela Shelton... it was Amazing!! I really encourage everyone to visit her website and buy her documentary. Just a quick synopsis: Angela Shelton was horribly sexualy abused by her father, step-mother and step-brother while a young girl she sets out to contact all the Angela Shelton's across America to interview them. She finds that about 40% of these women have been raped, beaten or molested themselves. At the end of the movie she confronts her father for her past abuse, it's a tear jerker! This week, I wrote about the Sense and Sexuality website and an article in Washington Monthly praising it. My next post about it will be about how the purity movement evokes Jane Austen to do a certain kind of cultural work.
