I watched this film in my english class last year!! It was awesome!!!!

Ohh I saw this in two classes in college. It's very eye opening to see the super tight grip music companies have over main stream hip hop and the effect it has.

this is great!

i read samhita's previous entry. i struggle with the same thing myself. the problem is at the end of the day, even if the lyrics disturb us, this is MUSIC and it SOUNDS GOOD and wants to make us MOVE. even the immortal jackson 5's "love you save" is sexist, but whenever i hear it, i just want to dance to little michael's groove. hip hop, i think, more than many other types of music out in america, makes us feel upbeat and happy - and we head out to the dance floor.

its tough though, because so much of what is said is so incredibly hurtful to other minority groups. there's no easy answer to the question of "why" does this happen. i guess as consumers we have to try to purchase music that appeals to our sense of music AND values, and mainstream artists have to commit to finding a way to make their music positive, enjoyable, AND popular.

Awesome. I clips of it in my classes, usually pairing it with the clips from Killing Us Softly where Jean Kilbourne talks about how power differences between men and women, and whites and blacks, are depicted in popular advertisements.

Jessica, what class are you teaching at Rutgers? I'd be interested to know how this awesome doc fits into it.

I loved this! Thanks for sharing.

Does anyone know where I could find more info/discussion breaking down stereotypical masculinity and male gender roles?

I will be showing this to a group of 10th grade black males in a few weeks...

It's a great film and has a great curriculum guide as well...

Will look forward to seeing their responses...
