What We Missed

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, says the ban on women serving aboard submarines should be lifted.

A pilot is accused of stalking his ex-girlfriend...from the air.

Nancy Folbre at The New York Times weighs in on why health care reform is a women's issue.

When Texas says that abstinence-only education isn't working, you know that shit is done for.

"When Texas says that abstinence-only education isn't working, you know that shit is done for."

Hilarious. One quick question though, is Texas demographically the most conservative on sex-related issues?

That's an honest question. I searched 538.com for their election statistics to see if they had anything and didn't really come up with much of an answer. Google search proved futile as well. Anyone?

i know last year, or maybe the year before, texas finally allowed the sale of "dildos" - before it was illegal; you could only get "educational models."

texas has consistently been near the top of the list for teenage pregnancies.

I'm from texas - and I'm not sure about this, but I think Mississippi is actually more conservative in that regard. I believe they have the highest teen pregnancy rate in America. Part of the dildo's thing (and a lot of our other crazy laws) have to do with the insane way our legislature is set up coupled with an obvious conservative bent. Basically, not much can get done in six months, and nobody wanted to be 'the guy who brought up legalizing dildos' or 'the guy who voted for legalizing dildos'. For liberals, it's funny, but not an important fight, and conservatives are anti-dildo, I guess. It was overturned by the Supreme Court when they actually became legal, or so I think. But this is still hilarious. I miss Molly Ivins :(

That's a difficult question to answer, truthfully, since the mix of public and private schools makes for skewed data results. And, I doubt they are required to denote in detail about what their sex education programs truly connote.

Some of my own what you missed:

Personhood Montana tries again, even though this talks about it in broader terms, but does mention MT: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-embryos-personhood28-2009sep28,0,7467778.story

Also a great tragedy has taken in place in MT as one of our great advocates against domestic violence was killed by a drunk driver:

http://missoulian.com/news/local/article_f61b062a-abeb-11de-b464-001cc4c03286.html

She will be missed. I know this is local MT news, but I wanted to share. If I could figure out how to blog with a link to the article I would blog about it. I have tried, but I just have some block to how to do. Thank you.

The integration of submarines, especially fast attack submarines, is just not feasible without also integrating berthing. Realize that they are so hard up for space that hot racking is required, in which those who are sleeping use the racks of those on watch. Adding separate berthing for females would certainly diminish their combat ability, because that space has to come from somewhere.

Only if American society got over the need for sex-based privacy would this make sense.

W00t! That's good to hear, just wish it wouldn't have taken them so long to admit it.

I've felt for years that the military ban on women serving in confined space with males was a tacit admission that the policymakers firmly believe they are hiring and training rapists. Not that they are (at least not to much greater degree than rapists exist outside the military), not that they believe that they are.

It demonstrates the level of disconnect the officer class has from the enlisted class. You ask an officer "Could you share a fox hole or submarine with a female who matched or surpassed your skill in her duties?" the answer will nearly always be a "yes", and any qualification comes in the form of "But she might be in danger from others.". "Others" means "those morons who were not smart enough to be born in a social strata that enabled them to get the education and confidence to become an officer. The enlisted men don't care beyond the beliefs that have been fed to them that women can't do the job, a belief that has been substantiated only through the efforts of the officer class trying to maintain the fiction that they can't do the work.

I served, and not even all that recently. I've been out nearly 20 years, but when I was in most guys I knew would share the task with any woman who could do the work. The Army maintains separate training standards to mask prejudice; they don't test women to the same physical standards, don't even allow it so they can point to a difference in things like strength and endurance.

If you have a combat MOS then it should be blind to gender. Can you lift and carry the average weight of a comrade this distance? Can you hit this target, throw that grenade, run that far in that amount of time? You can? Ok, you got the job.

Yes, I do believe that the strongest person in the world had a dick and balls. The fastest runner probably does too. But 99.9999% of the other people with dicks and balls can't lift or run like those two dudes. Most guys and most women are probably pretty close to the same or can be trained to be close to the same level of ability. Look at some of the fire houses in the nation that use unilateral standard testing.

And you don't lift on a sub, and there ain't no plane to run to on one either.

Same goes for homosexuals. By and large enlisted folks could give two shits about a guy fucking another guy. Looks like the brass might be coming around to the females, let's hope they cease shitting on the queer folk soon as well.
