Randall Terry is at it again. The founder of anti-choice extremist group Operation Rescue who said the late Dr. George Tiller "reaped what he sowed" as well as launched a terrifying and violence-inducing campaign against Sonia Sotomayor, has been going on a completely bizarre and batshit crazy road show tour. Joe from Amplify has more:
Yesterday, the freakshow went to Louisville, KY, where Terry performed a "skit" with two "actors". Dressed as a doctor (after stabbing a baby doll), he stabbed someone playing an old women in the neck, with a sign behind him reading "Obama death-care. One dead patient at a time." He then shook the hand of a white guy in an Obama mask over the woman on the ground.
While many folks are seeing this just as a silly act by a crazy man, Joe reminds us that this is no laughing matter; Terry and his organization will try to incite violence if they get the chance. And with the removal of federal Marshall protection from Dr. Leroy Carhart and his Nebraska clinic, Operation Rescue's intentions to "keep it closed" (referring to Carhart's intentions to re-open Tiller's clinic in Kansas) could ensue some serious shit this weekend when they'll be protesting.
The good news is that local NOW chapters and other activists in the Nebraska and Kansas area will be holding huge counter-protests. So if you're in or around these areas this weekend, be sure to get involved. If not, contact Attorney General Eric Holder and demand that they reinstate Marshall protection over Dr. Carhart at 202-353-1555.

Jesus would have really hated the idea of extending health coverage to the poor.
*Sigh*... I really wanted to make it to the counter-protests but alas I have to haul all my crap to a new apartment this weekend. If anyone from Feministing is planning on going, please show Dr. Carhart extra support on my behalf.
allieb87, I am going with a caravan from Illinois...we are making signs on behalf of those who cannot make it. Technically it's only for those who donate $5 or more, but I can try to squeeze some in for the feministing community...
What would you like your sign to say?
Also, for those who cannot go, please check out now.org - 1/3 of the way down, click on "Defend Dr. Carhart's Clinic" for actions you can take, including signing a petition, sending him a thank you, and a link to KS NOW's website to make a donation for the event.
Thanks all!
Yes, here's the direct link

I know it's hard for a lot of you to go to the counter protests, but at least take a moment to thank him. He's really on the front lines in this war on reproductive rights,

Sorry, for the double post, I didn't think the first one worked.
era4allNOW, I'm happy to donate $5 if you can point me in the right direction to do so.
Ah! Sign anxiety! I've never been good at coming up with good slogans... "Support Dr. Carhart, Support Reproductive Freedom"? I dunno... it's a curse.
allieb87, you can donate here:

THANK YOU so much...it is very much needed!
And this might be a goofy idea, but there's a website with tons of paraphernalia (tshirts, bumper stickers, etc) and I get ideas from there. Here's what comes up when typed in "reproductive rights":

anyway, it gets the creative juices flowing for me...
I made my donation. I'm really glad just to be able to do something... I don't care so much what the sign says.
This may not be a big distinction for most people, but Randall Terry is actually not affiliated with the organization led by Troy Newman that's launching this "Keep It Closed" campaign. Fun fact: Randall & Troy have been splintering the anti-choice movement for years. Operation Rescue & Troy aren't affiliated with the group that Randall Terry founded, which is now called Operation Save America.
It's all very confusing, and they're both equally despicable, but I have to admit, Randall's better at the over the top theatrics than Troy tends to be. (Now watch Troy try to one-up Randall at this circus in Nebraska this weekend.)
So while it makes sense to mention the anti-choice crazy of both Randall Terry & Troy Newman's organization in one post, but not as though they were from the same organization. And I'm almost positive that Randall Terry will not be at the protest at Dr Carhart's clinic this weekend.
ANYWAY.
All that said:
If anyone needs a ride or wants to caravan from the greater Kansas City area, let me know! I've got a seat or two left in my car. We're leaving earrrrly Saturday morning and staying 'til whenever Operation Rescue goes home on Saturday afternoon/evening.
He is sick. I heard on the radio today that Randall Terry is against Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and of course, health care reform. He's just absolutely insane and out of touch with reality. He was removed from a health care town hall yesterday, I think, because the legislator who held it (forgot who) read that he planned on going just to disrupt it. And he was doing just that and was made to leave. He wants to scream and rant, but he doesn't want to listen or care. He's a freak.
