I think this is a really interesting story, especially in terms of the impact on the children. I come from parents who divorced when I was 15, and my Mom moved out of my school district (yet still in the same city). It was a very clear and simple choice that sole custody would go to my Dad so I could graduate with my friends, and since I was almost at driving age, we decided not to do mandatory visitation times, just coordinate visits organically. Yet despite the logic of it all, and the fact that it gave me the freedom I wanted as a teenager, this big part of me was upset that my mom "gave up" custody. In my teenage mind she didn't even put up a fight for me, and that hurt. Of course now at 22 I better understand the forces that led to divorce and I still know that was the absolute best decision fro everyone involved, but I find it interesting how emotion and social norms can shield our logic.
Very interesting segment. Good in emphasizing how many fathers are/can be amazing primary caregivers. However, I wish that they hadn't continually referred to noncustodial mothers as mothers who 'gave up' their children.
Thanks so much to Feministing for covering this story! I agree that by relinquishing physical custody moms and dads are not "giving up" their kids! Also, it's not about who is the better parent. It is very exciting to see the issue of gender equality in parenting get positive media attention though.
I wasn't able to get my website into the segment, but anyone interested in these issues can find me through my website, NonCustodial Parent Community (http://ncpcommunity.com/)
