Planned Parenthood interviews me about The Purity Myth

Hey all, I just got back from my pre-wedding honeymoon (fun!) last night and will back to blogging regularly this Wednesday. Until then, I thought I'd share this video of an interview I did with the wonderful Kendall McKenzie of Planned Parenthood about The Purity Myth. Hope you enjoy it.

It sounds like it kind of expands on what was discussed about birth control and EC in Full Frontal Feminism. These topics are one of my prime interests as far as feminism goes, so I'm looking forward to reading this book too!

Rock on Jessica!

I went to the library today to see if they had copies of the Purity Myth and they were on hold. That's a pretty good sign!

Wow. I kind of know that it takes substantial preparation and skill to convey the meaning of one's work in a way that can be edited into soundbites. That was masterful.

I read this a few weeks ago and its actually what got me on to this site in the first place. Thank you so much for this book, great job!

i heard 1 minute of it and already can't take it anymore . A christian who value women for their virginity is maybe sick but it is not sexist in itself . It becomes sexist , misogynist , only when SOME christian decide that the value of virginity only applies to women and not to young men . If the requirements are the same for men and women ,as dumb as may be these requirements ,it is not sexist .

Jessica valenti ( and a lot of the phsycho false feminist around here ) is obviously too dumb to understand such an incredibly complex distinction .

It's so easy to brainlessly pick on christian without any understanding or nuance just to seem cool and in .

Basically what you all are afraid of is being rejected of your dogmatic arty farty social circle . You'r far more dogmatic and closed minded that alot of psycho christians .

It is so warm and easy and confortable to diss christians .The more you diss christianity the more you are cool and accepted . It's a deal that WIMPS will rarely refuse .

I'm guessing by your name, and by your lack of correct spelling and grammar, you are not from the U.S. originally.

Well in the U.S. today, and in many places throughout history, virginity is a concept considered far more important for women to uphold than men. Looking at the abstinence education that is prevalent in the U.S. today, most often the concepts of "purity" are applied primarily to women. Also, in the Bible, virginity is ONLY used in reference to women.

In cases where standards are completely equal for men and women, I would agree with you that is not sexist. But, I think that is rarely the case. And, I grew up in a very religious area surrounded by practicing Christians, so don't say I don't know anything about Christianity.

Peace-

I agree very much with what you said, but it might not be the best idea to say that this person must not be from America and to go to spelling and grammer right away...pleaes dont be offended by this, I quite like your post and the maturity of it. Starting out saying that however puts the other person on the defesive right away, and wont work to facilitate a dialogue. Again please do not feel offended, im trying to figure out the best way to start an open conversation, although I am offended aswell. (Not by you).

Please do not make assumptions here. I also grew up in a very religious household, yes Catholic, and I understand exactly what the chuch teaches, perhaps too much for my liking. Just because I chose a different way to think doesnt mean I cant grasp the concept, I resent that idea.

Jessica said nothing to condemn Christianity, and we all aupport your right to hold your own beliefs, but please phrase them in a respectful and thought provoking way so we can start a discussion, not an attack. Calling someone a psycho and stupid (that was implied) does nothing to facilitate a dialouge, and starts off attacking others when we have made no attack on you. I would very much like to hear your opinions.

Around here, the atmosphere is that women are judged negativly by sex, and men are judged positivly. If you grew up with a different outlook I would be very interested to hear about it, but not in a way that is condescending to my beliefs. But dont say I dont know anything, I know quite a lot. Just because someone does not agree with you does not make them a psycho or stupid, or anything else. I dont feel these things towards what you have said and I dont agree. Thank you.

I find that being sexually satisfied improves my spelling, syntax, and grammar. Something to look into, once you're done shaming sexually active women.

I have to say, you are not one of my favorite people ever. Lol :)

Whoops, sorry it wasn't taking. I'll add that I am pretty sure that stephane is likely a native speaker of English. He/she is using a dialect I like to call "ranting wingnut" that is common on the internets. It's a lot like English, but less intelligible. I don't know what causes it, but it is closely linked with being a wingnut.

When , in a culture , a belief is applied prefably to women and not to men ( like the value of purity ) , from a feminist point of view it is the inequal application , use , of this belief not the belief (purity )that has to be criticized .

Let christian decide if they want to value purity or not but fight so that whatever their choices , values , may be , they apply these values the same way toward young men and women , that's all, whatever these values may be or may not be.

Is what i'm saying so difficult to understand ?

I'm days behind on my blog feed, but just got to this. Jessica, I just wanted to tell you that my library didn't have your book, so I filled out an online form to request it and they got back to me *the next day* saying they had ordered it. Sweet! Just picked it up yesterday, loving it so far. Thanks!
