What We Missed Open Thread: Technical Difficulties Edition

As in, technical problems...not the site. STAY DOWN!
Apologies, we had some technical difficulties today so some of you may have seen double posts in comments and a lag in posting content. We have taken care of the issue. But now I have to run and won't have a chance to put together the what we missed, so consider this an open thread. What did we miss Feministers?

Cynthia McKinney was *not* kidnapped. She was detained and deported for illegally running an Israeli blockade.
Cynthia McKinney is a shameless exhibitionist and grand-stander who has accused the Department of Defense of using Hurricane Katrina to cover up the slaughter of 5,000 prisoners whom she claims were secretly buried in a swamp in Louisiana, used the anti-semitic New Black Panther Party as security who in her service hurled racist invectives at Jewish reporters, and refused to distance herself from remarks her father made on television the night before her election defeat, stating that "Jews have bought everybody ... J-E-W-S."
Believe me, the Palestinians don't want someone like her on their side. She will do more harm than good to their cause. Her actions are shameful. It's an absolute outrage that she was ever elected to be in the U.S. Congress in the first place, and the manner in which she conducted herself while in office was truly dishonorable. Her fellow House Democrats wouldn't touch her with a ten-foot pole when she was in office, and I refuse to believe a single thing she says about what has happened to her in Israel. She is a disgrace to her community and country.
P.S. The Uyghur situation in China warrants a closer look.
The few sources I could find confirming this state she was held hostage. If you are going to say she wasn't, please cite it.
And, whether or not you agree with her on her policies, I would think a feminist would usually be someone who cares about others and thus would be concerned for a person's safety regardless of their policies. If McCain, Huckabee, Palin, whoever was held hostage, I would be concerned for their safety and hoping for the best for themselves and their family instead of taking this as an opportunity to bash his or her policies.
And, by the way, are you a Palestinian? If not, don't put words in their mouths.
How about the New York Times? Is that a good enough source? MSNBC? AP? A zillion other sources? How about Wikipedia? As I've clearly stated, she was detained and deported for illegally running a blockade that is internationally recognized as legal, and one that the Palestinian Authority agreed upon. This blockade is set up to prevent arms flow to Gaza and subsequent rocket attacks on Israel.
Again, she was not held hostage, and her safety is not an issue, considering the fact that she has been deported back to the U.S. And as far as my "taking the opportunity to bash her policies" goes, I'm pointing out her long and sordid history because it's germane to my not believing her.
Oh, and since her policy is obviously to hate on Jews, I'll feel free and happy to bash that policy all day long. All day long.
It took me all of 30 seconds to found this.

She was arrested and deported, not "kidnapped and held hostage." Also, nice how you claimed that mainstream media has been silent on this when actually, they haven't, as a simple google search shows.
Thank you for the link. To be fair, I get most of my news from television and newspaper, and I don't recall it being mentioned there. I had heard she was being held hostage on a blog that I trust. We all make mistakes, thank you for clarifying.

The Secret Lives of Boys: Inside the Raw Emotional World of Male Teens is exactly the kind of book I love to read. It is a collection of well-written case studies that give the reader a snapshot of teenage boys that most adults today don’t see. Although I’m no longer a teenager, and I’m not male, I do have a younger brother—someone just heading out of his teenage years—and I found myself identifying in some way with each of the ten boys Saval highlights.
Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History is a brilliant book that attempts the “impossible” and succeeds. Using Michel Foucault and Eve Sedgwick as theoretical touchstones, and incorporating Raymond Williams’s “structures of feeling,” Heather Love “feels backward” to reimagine and connect with aspects of a queer past that had been rendered invisible.
Shouting Fire: Stories from the Edge of Free Speech: Perhaps because I was working in the New York City public schools at the time, I was particularly moved by the story of Debbie Almontaser, the founding principal of Khalil Gibran International Academy (KGIA), an English-Arabic public school in Brooklyn, New York. KGIA is one of sixty-eight dual language schools intended to assist new immigrants with assimilating to their new home and foster an appreciation for the study of Arabic language and culture. Just one month before the school was slated to open, Almontaser was forced to resign as a result of anti-Arab, anti-Muslim fire that was sparked by Rightwing group Stop the Madrassa, fanned by Fox News, and finally made into an inferno by New York Post journalist Chuck Bennett, who took Almontaser's solicited explanation of the word intifada vastly out of context in order to write a sensationalistic story. The injustice done to Almontaser is devastating, though completely legal according to free speech laws.

"Seriously?! That is wonderful! Why cant my fiance and I live there.. x.x!!"
Now I'm thinking of reasons who you and your fiancé can't live here, ways to overcome those reasons so you two can live here, and how I could find links useful for those ways. Is the problem in your case finding new jobs here, affording a higher cost of living than where you live now, immigration laws, or something else?
Oh you are so nice ^_^ Actually we are both in college so moving anywhere right now is unrealistic. We are already trying to plan out how to live after college and how to move to an area where we can have full rights. We live in a state that does allow civil unions, but we want to live in an area like Massachusettes.
"Oh you are so nice ^_^"
Aww, thank you! :)
"Actually we are both in college so moving anywhere right now is unrealistic. We are already trying to plan out how to live after college and how to move to an area where we can have full rights."
Just thought of one more possibility: Is graduate school (or one more grad degree, if "in college" meant "already in grad school" in your comment) feasible and desirable for either of you?
There are a whole bunch of colleges and universities in the Boston area, many with graduate school programs and some of which offer on-campus housing for grad students and grad student + non-student couples (side effect: one can move into the area then go job-hunting instead of needing to live w/in commuting distance to get and start a job and needing to have a local job in order to convince a landlord to let one in).
OTOH, sometimes couples housing can be difficult to qualify for, and here's an example: http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/ghg/beingthere.html#documentation
"...Now that you have been assigned to family housing, you will need to show Proof of Family.
"Documentation must show both names of the couple and must be in English or have an English translation...
"...Unmarried couples and same-sex couples may provide one of the following: a previous lease together, copy of engagement/commitment announcement in newspaper, certificate of civil union.
"If you do not have any of these, you should open a joint account as soon as you apply for housing. NOTE: your joint bank account must be at least 4 months old by the time you move into your assigned apartment. If this is not possible, you should get a notarized letter from a parent verifying you are in a committed domestic relationship..."
BTW, if you or your partner applied to a school like MIT or Harvard or whatever for its undergrad program and didn't get in, that doesn't automatically mean you'd be rejected if you apply again for one of its grad programs. I know some people IRL who got rejected the first time around and got in the second time around!
Anyway, grad school or no grad school, best of luck with your current studies! :)

Yeah, I heard someone in my parents' generation in Massachusetts say pretty much 'Larry Craig's not gay, he just wanted to dip his wick, gay men love men, just look at them all getting married...'

To all readers of feministing, the comments on that article are offensive and triggering. Do not read them if you don't have to. I flagged all the rascist comments I could get, we'll see what happens next.
I tried to flag as much as possible but I couldnt get past page 3 without becoming insanly angry. I wish I could say I cant believe this could happen today, but our nation still has such a long way to go and this proves it. This is such a horrible event, and for it to happen to children..oh my god..
Good point, and MetaFilter's post on the case has a better batch of comments: http://www.metafilter.com/83132/Not-So-Much-Brotherly-Love

An male African college student was accused of rape of a white female student. He proclaims his innocence. I hope you guys do a post on this
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=4300383
that news story is one of the most victim blaming I have ever seen. it basically makes the case that if you have been drinking or drugged and are raped, your flashes of memory are meaningless because you may not have noticed other things. I understand the racist implications and why this may deserve a closer look in terms of the way the law enforcement acted, but the obvious slut shaming (how dare she have had consensual sex with someone and their semen be present!) and victim blaming attitudes of the article bothered me enough that it distracted me from seeing any other value in the article. It did everything it could do discredit the victim and glorify the athlete.
I disagree. There was no victim blaming in that article at all. They just stated the facts. She had near toxic levels of alcohol in her, she had contact with two other men that night who were never looked at as suspects and Frimpong's dna was nowhere on her. Frimpong was convicted by an all white jury of 9 women and 3 men, definitely not a jury of his peers. This case is simply a continuation of what has been happening to black men since the early 20th century; a white women falsely accuses a black man of rape and he gets lynched for it.
You seriously think that was an unbiased article?
He was portrayed as the victim and the hero.
