Re: fashion line
I really like the sharp lines of her jackets.
Completely agreed! I am not Muslim nor required in any way to cover myself, but I don't like showing a lot of skin and a lot of women's fashions are fairly fitted. I would definitely buy something like this. It's attractive, doesn't scream "SEXY" (I'm a bit of a wallflower and I don't want clothing to attract a lot of attention), and looks like it would be comfortable to wear.
I have gone to a few conservative fashion sites, Muslim ones included, because they often give really good tips for layering (useful in cold weather and also for presents from people that you never would have picked for yourself) and finding ways to keep yourself covered.
Thank you, Feministing, for posting that!
"The world watched Michael Jackson's memorial service today."
Actually, I tried to find something else-- ANYTHING else-- on TV. That didn't work out so well for me.
I'm a bit disappointed I can't even get away from Michael Jackson on Feministing, of all places.
I'm sorry. I have to be honest. We're fucking sick and tired of hearing about Michael Jackson. There's little to no analysis in current coverage of the race issues he brings up, or of his likely history of pedophilia - just unquestioned celebratory adoration. It's fucking tiring.
if you want to talk about the race issues michael brings up, or concerns about pedophilia, you don't have to wait for anyone to do it. we have a community blog that you can post on, or you could do it right here in the comments section, and let the discussion begin.
on the flipside, if you feel that something was missed because of michael jackson coverage, you also have the ability to draw attention to that in the aforementioned ways.
the michael jackson memorial was the biggest news of the day - some estimate that app. one billion people watched. anything that one billion people (or even close to that) are paying attention to is definitely newsworthy. it would be remiss of any site to not include it in a post labeled "what we missed."

Bring on the American Idol.
I don't mean to attack the blog, which is my favorite in the world. But, really, the rest of the NOT one billion people - so, that's, like, 6 billion in the world - would like to be thinking about other things. This celebrity-worship coverage pushes out numerous other events that have more real and more SERIOUS consequences and implications. And our conglomerate media organizations already suck royally at international coverage.
That is all. Just makes a girl bitchy that our popular media outlets beat these celebrity stories to death.
yeah....i don't disagree with you (though i do love mj, i also agree that the coverage is a little too much).
i was just playin a little devil's advocate. the media attention span is short though, so after this we will likely see mj drop off the news pretty quickly.

Isn't that exactly what this person is doing? By commenting on the Michael Jackson coverage?
Sounds to me like you're just trying to admonish someone for expressing their opinion. Pretty unnecessary.
C-SPAN?
Paris was heartbreaking to see...
What happened in Paris? And why do you hate the French?
Not sure if this is entirely serious or not, but I'm going to take the humorless tact and answer it like you don't know.
Paris is Michael Jackson's daughter who professed her love for her father at the end of the "Memorial" event.
Wow! I thought his funeral was held in Los Angeles.
Thanks.
I'm kind of surprised you've made no acknowledgement that you missed the kidnapping of Cynthia McKinney. I mean, I'm sorry that Michael Jackson died and I'm pround of the all women rowing team, but a former presidential candidate was just released from being held hostage in Israel.
Honestly it's because most people see what she does as a stunt.
Cynthia McKinney is a fool.
After reading those comments above that essentially complain about too much coverage of this or not enough of that, it just prompted me to say thanks, Feministing.com bloggers.
You all run a fantastic blog, constantly updated, with relevant news that keeps me updated on all things feminist and more. While there is always room for constructive criticism, and yes, you can't catch every story, sometimes even big ones, and everyone will have an opinion about which story does not fit your mission and which one should have, I personally don't know what I would do without you all and I don't want to find out!
Agreed. I especially like the "What We Missed" feature - kind of like the Weekly Feminist Reader, only we get it every day.
Yes--I also would like to thank you, and remind other readers of this great blog that you all have OTHER jobs and do this as volunteers. You have no responsibility to post on every single story that's even a little bit related to feminism, and yet you manage to do so almost without exception. You are perfectly allowed to miss a story or two.
I guarantee that if you hadn't covered Michael Jackson at all, you would have been called out for ignoring the death of a superstar and such a controversial figure. In fact, I'd say the MJ coverage here was pretty balanced and while the rest of the media was ignoring the rest of the world, you reminded us of the military violence in Honduras and kept your threads on track with all current events, and yes, that includes the death of the "King of Pop."
I'm actually impressed by how few stories you do miss, considering this is all done in your free time, and how quickly you correct mistakes when they do happen; this blog is run really well. Kudos!
I don't think anyone here is saying these women are awful or horrible for forgetting a story here and there. Nor is anyone screaming at them for talking about MJ. Allegra was just voicing an opinion about his coverage on this site (one which I share) and I think that's completely fair.
This is my favorite blog ever. I read it every day and that's not going to stop. And yes, I realize these women have other jobs, but does that mean that they should be free from any sort of criticism on here? I don't think so. Sheesh.
Micheal Jackson > World Events, Hunger, Suffering
Oft times when there is nothing on tv I want to see I pick up two amazing inventions: the clicker and a book.

This is the biggest death since Kurt Cobain, thanks for caring.

The Uighirs in China are protesting against their treatment by the PR China. China's responded by shutting down all cellphone, internet, telephone and media communications and bringing in the military.

Internet map shows HIV rates higher in the U.S. South.

I think the findings are really significant because the U.S. South tends to be a strongly Republican area with strong emphasis on abstinence only education and very little true sex education. It also ties strongly into religious fundamentalism.
The map also has interesting information about age, gender, and race. The article itself mentioned the high population of minorities and the high infection rate of minorities. What the map fails to cover also is income level. The South is well know for having the highest rate of poverty.
In my opinion, this map serves to emphasis the need for universal health care coverage and the relationship between health care and oppression.
It also goes to show how abstinence only education is clearly not working to prevent STD transmission.
There's a whole lot that can be said about the study itself, the article written about it, and the significance of it all in terms of oppressive forces.
Just food for thought rather than arguing about how important or unimportant MJ is/was.
