Today the FDA approved the first generic version of Plan B; it will be available to women ages 17 and under with a prescription. (Emergency contraception will also soon be available without a prescription for 17 years-olds.)

Good. 40-60 bucks is ridiculous.
about damn time!
Ages 17 and under?
Great, now if only pharmacies would stock it more consistently...
Did I miss something? Is there already a generic version available if you're OVER 17?
Cause I'm 26 and $50.00 is a lot of farking money to be spending for this stuff...as is paying for a trip to the doctor to get a prescription...or taking time off of work in order to go to Planned Parenthood during the hours they can give me Plan B for a cheaper price.
I think the "prescription under 17" part just means that women under 17 need a prescription, but people over 17 can get it over the counter. It's how Plan B is now.
Yeah I know, but so will the generic be available for everyone? Just the way it's worded makes it sound as though the generic will ONLY be available for 17 and under.
Also will the generic only be available by prescription? Or can you get it over-the-counter if you're over 17?
I didn't find any information on what it will sell for. Does anyone know the price?
It's very possible I'm just overlooking it, being a frantic mess right now.

This article says that the generic *IS* actually only for women 17 and younger, and by prescription only. 18 and up, you still get Plan B at the lovely price it is.
"Why not just make the generic product available without a prescription?
Because Duramed Pharmaceuticals has a patent on Plan B's nonprescription sales until Aug. 24, 2009. The new generic product is made by a different company, Watson Laboratories Inc., and even after Duramed's patent expires, the generic product won't automatically become available without a prescription -- Watson Laboratories would have to seek FDA approval for that. The FDA won't say whether such an application has been filed."
Kind of rediculous.
What? Has the over-the-counter prescription just not been tested enough on women over 17 and therefore not ready to be approved by the FDA yet? Or do they just assume we really really like paying lots of money for Plan B?
