Friday Feel-Good Story: Teen Lesbians Voted Best Couple in Yearbook

SistersTalk made a great point:

While the adults in Albany, NY still can't get it together to vote on the gay marriage bill in the NY Senate, the students of Mott Haven Village Preparatory (Public) High School in the Bronx have already cast their vote - and made history.

Victoria Cruz and Deoine Scott were voted (by a landslide!) "Best Couple" by their high school peers, the first time a gay couple was voted Best Couple in the school, and possibly in the Bronx.

Check out their story, it's really sweet.

H/t to Bialogue.

Yay! That's way awesome.

Do you remember when Bill O'Reilly covered a story about a lesbian couple being voted cutest couple at their high school? Ugh, he was such a clown.

[0+] Author Profile Page AlmostAmanda replied to Ruby :

Is their ever a time when he is not being a clown (you know, other than those times when he is being a ginormous asshole)?

He has to sleep sometime.

his dreams are full of witch trials and kitten punching.

That's actually the first thing I thought of when I read this Ruby. I remember that segment also and he was such a condescending jerk to the psychologist who was on commenting that it was a good sign that kids were accepting GLBT classmates. Of course he disagreed and then went on to say how he doesn't want gay kids being bullied and even wrote about it in one of his books. So it seems like he doesn't want to see gay kids being harrassed (or at least that's what he wants people to think) but flips his shit when they're acknowledged in any way

[0+] Author Profile Page Ruby replied to Furiousfemale :

Yeah, that was totally the vibe I got from it too. He doesn't want gay kids picked on, he just wants them to be invisible.

Totally awesome! Wishing you both a Happy Pride!

What a cute couple!

That's a really sweet picture. There was another case somewhere else where a lesbian couple was voted "best couple" but then a bunch of parents and teachers freaked, so they copped out and put them on a page with a bunch of hetero couples....this ended up on O'reilly which is what Ruby referred to earlier.
I hope for these young women that they are just left alone to enjoy their best couple title

Ah, for once, a nice story! 2 years and change is FOREVER when you're in high school. I hope they have an excellent time at prom.

when I say this was exactly what I needed today, I mean I just cried as I have, possibly, never cried before because of the ridiculous shit that is happening in my town right now over some PFLAG speakers me and my Gay Straight Alliance brought in, and this is EXACTLY what I needed right now. Thank you world. Thank you feministing.

Hooray! They are pretty cute! :)

The best news of all? The students who voted this couple into the yearbook will soon be (if they aren't already) of age to vote in state and federal elections. Let's hope they add their voices there as well!

To add another layer of "aww" to it, I was really heart-warmed to see that the link was to their own story that Vikky created for WNYC's Radio Rookies program. I love seeing young women of color getting to use the media to speak in their own voices instead of being perpetually reported-on.

This gives me hope -- if high schoolers (not a demographic typically known for their acceptance of any sort of "otherness") can vote for a lesbian couple as their "Year's Best Couple" by a landslide or vote for a man as their homecoming queen, we're watching the casting of LGBTQ issues as "cultural" issues eroding.

double "aww," I heard this featured on All Things Considered on the drive home and was endeared all over again.

My high school girlfriend and I were voted "Barbie and Ken couple" (heteronormative much?) in 2007. We thought it was pretty cool, and funny, and I wasn't aware of any parents or students complaining. We were pretty jealous when we found out that another couple's story was covered on the O'Reilly factor, though--we thought we deserved at least as much attention.

HEY EVERYONE THIS IS DEOINE.

I JUST WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR SUPPORTING THE STORY AND US. IT FEELS GREAT TO KNOW THAT WE ARE GETTING GOOD FEED BACK FROM EVERYONE. THIS YEAR HAS BEEN THE YEAR OF CHANGE AND I AM HAPPY THAT PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE SUPPORTING CHANGE INSTEAD OF GOING AGAINST IT. HOPEFULLY THIS EVENT CAN HELP BRING ABOUT GAY MARRIAGE FOR THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY. IF PEOPLE IN A SMALL SCHOOL CAN LOOK PAST THE ISSUE OF A SAME SEX RELATIONSHIP AND LOOK AT TWO PEOPLE IN LOVE, MAYBE THE GOVERNMENT CAN TO.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ACCEPTING US AS PEOPLE NOT AS LABELS.
