What We Missed

BBC pundit says female tennis players are "just there to sell sex."

Amanda highlights a hilarious Buffy/Twilight remix.

Some UK docs are trying to ban "sexy" abortion clinic ads.

Former Episcopal parishes are coming together to form a new national church, the Anglican Church in North America. The church will ban women and gay people as bishops. Charming.

On the Canadian glass ceiling.

I grew up Episcopalian and come from a family with clergy members, several of whom is at the forefront of the Anglican separation. My parents have left the Episcopal church for the new Anglican one as well.
As a feminist and a lesbian, this makes me very sad. I just hope that the Episcopal Church stays strong in its inclusion of women and of the gay community. I remain firmly Episcopalian. To the Anglican separatists, I say: Good Riddance.

As a Canadian, the division of the Anglican churches is sharp and distinct. In my city, The downtown parishes are divided between liberal parishes with Pride symbols on their doorsteps and prayers for freedom from 'discrimination due gender, race or sexual orientation' in their weekly services, and conservative ones who have separated from the Anglican church of Canada (over disputes regarding the blessing of same-sex marriages) to join with an 'Anglican Network' of a South American diocese.

I want to say 'good riddance' ... but it's still sad to see such inflexibility...

Why has there been no coverage of what is going on in Iran here? A young woman has been catapaulted to the world stage for a heroic act of martyrdom. Is this not a feminist issue?

re: The asshole at the BBC

I'm so fucking sick of people chastising some female athletes for being sexy. For one thing, I understand that men have to avoid looking gay at all costs, but don't male sports fans ever notice that MALE athletes are, well, hot? I understand that men's bodies are for doing and women's bodies are for being done, and therefore male athletes play sports and female athletes are these strange creatures who should be lying down and hey dammit, why can she play tennis better than almost all women AND men when she's hot? In other words, sexist sports fans see nothing wrong with men parading their hot stuff around the tennis court, since, to them, men could never be sexy, since women don't have sex drives, and gay men don't exist or at least belong in hell for existing. Women, on the other hand, exist to be hot, and if they're playing sports, that's lamentable, and if they're talented at sports, that's even worse, since maybe then sexist sports fans might have to admit that women can use their bodies for something other than being hot. And, of course, if male athletes are known for being hot, it's a byproduct of their athletic prowess, not their natural role as men.

And, don't people like this BBC pundit realize that they are doing this to themselves? It certainly isn't the fault of the female athletes that they can make more money taking sexy pictures for Maxim than they can playing at Wimbledon. How the fuck else do you explain Anna Kournikova? She was a very talented player, who also happened to be hot, and, instead of recognizing her talent (like we can with less conventionally "hot" players, but not without charging them with asexual manliness!) she was immediately cast off by the media and sports fans as some dumb slut who just wanted to make a buck on her looks and Enrique Iglesias. All because she took advantage of what everyone already thought about her anyway.

I love that the original Daily Mail article shows pictures of the female athletes at events, as though they show up to the court dressed to the nines and ready to be sexxay. As though male athletes never go to events.

The Buffy/Twilight thing was really funny! and a much healthier way to deal with a creepy stalker than in the books

I'm tired too about hearing women being accused of selling sex when they are doing their jobs. They can't help it if they tennis skirts are yay up, what do they want them to do play in a mumuu?

OMG a religion that hates women and gays?!? What is the world coming to?

This is sad news for Episcopalians, and I hope it doesn't happen. Seems ironic timing, since Rev. Dr. Katherine Ragsdale just spoke at the National NOW Conference as the lesbian feminist Episcopal priest and president & dean of Episcopal Divinity School. I just have to say - she was f***ing phenomenal.

Just when you think you're making progress and might change this world around, those anti-humanists find another way to bring things backward again. Boo.
