err...
what's marijuana got to do with feminism? It's not really a feminist issue...
or is it?
I personally don't find marijuana, even for health reasons, all that great. So I say 'boo' to Rhode Island.
considering how many women are in prison for nonviolent drug crimes...i'd say marijuana de-criminalization is totally a feminist issue

not to mention how blatantly classist some of our drugs laws are (for instance being able to cary 10 times the amount of powder cocaine than crack cocaine before receiving the minimum sentence)
actually i'd really like to write a community post about it some time when i have to time to sit down and do it throughly...

Rhode Island is singular, so the post should read "its existing law" not "their existing law."
And this is an issue why?
Some people are just really into grammar.
Though it works either way, as the it could either refer to the state or the people of Rhode Island.
Gay marriage and now legalizing marijuana...New England is quickly becoming what California has so far failed to be.
Thank you for FINALLY bringing up the NOW conference, albeit last minute. Maybe the bloggers of feministing aren't into NOW, but many of its readers are, and many more could be! If you're really interested in making NOW more relevant to young feminists, then more young feminists need to be a part of NOW. It is a grassroots organization, so it is only as good as its people!
I personally am INCREDIBLY ecstatic about attending this conference. It will be my first National NOW conference. I'm excited that Carol Moseley Braun will be there! And I'm so excited that so many people I know will be attending; many from Illinois Choice Action, my mom (former President of Indiana NOW), my aunt (haven't seen her in almost ten years!!!), and many friends whom I haven't seen get involved with NOW until...now!
I also am personally torn about the elections; I don't know Latifa at all, unfortunately, but am very excited to meet her. I do know, however, two of the candidates for the opposing slates and they are amazing!! One is a young feminist herself, with an AMAZING track record. I can't deny the positive effect that having a young AND non-caucasian woman as the face & voice of NOW will have; but I also know the people on the opposing slate are great.
I really want to stress, though, that if the bloggers on here are really concerned about the inclusion of young feminists in NOW, the best way to do that would be to join! When I first became a member of my local chapter of NOW I was the ONLY young feminist attending the meetings. Since I've been there, it's been a chain reaction and now almost HALF of our active members who attend the meetings are young feminists. I'm positive that's the way to do it. I'm not sure how anyone thinks they can change a grassroots movement by simply criticizing it without getting involved. Hope that's not too snarky, but that's how I feel.
