Dads, Dudes, and Doing It

If you're in the Brooklyn area, don't miss our intergenerational conversation in honor of Father's Day where we'll be exploring questions like:

  • How were your ideas about men and masculinity formed while growing up?
  • How did men shape your thinking about your own identity as a woman?
  • What is the role for men in the contemporary and future feminist movement?

It's really meant to be a dialogue, so the more folks we can pack in for their perspective, the richer the learning. Best of all, it's basically free (voluntary donation on the way in).

Deets:
Brooklyn Museum of Art
Saturday, June 20th, 2-4pm
Courtney Martin, Gloria Feldt, Deborah Siegel, and Kristal Brent Zook

And for those of you who liked Spy vs. Spy, the DJs that started the anniversary bash out right, consider ending the day lovely at Underwater Lounge in D.U.M.B.O. Brooklyn (no cover). They claim that if you show up in summer gear, they'll buy you a drink?!

This sounds like it's going to be an interesting and insightful conversation - I wish I could go!

Seen as how more and more guys are mostly raised by their mothers and have mostly female teachers at school it would be interesting indeed to analize what kind of men they become thesedays as opposed 40 years ago.

Anything that increases the quality of men. Should we really have just the option between living alone and marrying some drop out we have to support ?

Only because men had to financially support their wifes in the past, can society expect from us to financially support our husbands ? What good are our modern divorce laws, we fought so hard for, if there are so man underachieving men around, we would have to turn over half of what we worked so hard for, were we foolish enough to marry one of them ?

Many of your posts come across as non sequitur, passive-aggressive attempts at reverse psychology.

I just want a man who is not a total loser. Does it make me passive agressive to have standards ?

Equality means women have to work too - if you want a rich guy to pay your bills, you have to go along with the whole patriarchal sexist package that goes with it.

If you want equal rights, with rights come responsibilities - including earning your own keep and paying your own bills.

And yes it means you might have to marry a man who makes less than you do.

How are you judging the "quality of men"?

Apparently based on how fat their paychecks are.

"Quality" men = rich guys

"Loser" men = regular working class guys

Sounds like a cool dialogue. Y'all should post the highlights on this site. Slightly off-topic, but kudos to all the great feminist dads out there who raised their children as strong, intelligent individuals unconstrained by gender stereotypes and expectations. I happen to be lucky enough to have a father like that, and he, along with my equally fabulous mom, raised me and my sisters to reach our full potential. Go dad!
