Operation Rescue may buy Dr. Tiller's closed clinic

Please, say it isn't so.

On the heels of the closing of Dr. Tiller's clinic comes the horrific news that anti-choice extremist group Operation Rescue may try to buy the space.

Operation Rescue president Troy Newman said that his group has discussed the idea of buying the tan, windowless clinic in east Wichita. He made the comment after the Tiller family announced that the clinic would be closed permanently.

"I would love to make an offer on that abortion clinic, and that's some of the discussion that we're having," Newman said in a telephone interview Tuesday from his group's headquarters in Wichita.

These people seriously have no shame.

If I had the money, I'd buy that fucking clinic before they get to it.

But as for now, I'll go donate some more. Here's to hoping a pro-choice organization will step up and buy that clinic - if not for late-term abortions, then to make it into a Planned Parenthood or some other type of pro-choice clinic.

Seriously, something the fuck is wrong with Kansas.

Oh hell no. No. Would the owners sell it to them!?
This is like Al Qaeda building a monument to themselves at ground zero.

This is easily one of the tackiest, most tasteless gambits for attention I’ve seen from the anti-abortionists yet. Given who we’re talking about, that’s saying a lot.

I’m with Marc. Here’s hoping they can make a PPH out of it.

I'll bet if they get it they'll make an abortion museum out of it. Probably be a big draw.

I will write a check to any pro-choice org or clinician who steps up and buys this facility. I cannot stand the thought of Operation Rescue crowing over turning Dr. Tiller's clinic into a place of lies and untruths.

me too - I will write a cheque to whatever pro-choice org wants to buy it!
I can't believe how disgusting this "pro-life" shit is. I can't be coherent anymore, I just want to scream and throw stuff.

Something's rotten in the state of Kansas.

Is there any way we can donate money to save the clinic????????? Please let us know! We can all pool in money....

i believe you made a comment yesterday about not generalizing places and therefore alienating people, maybe you should follow your own advice?

thanks (and i don't mean this in a mean way! i'm just sayin...)

[0+] Author Profile Page Kathleen6674 replied to hoolissa :

How is her comment generalizing?

[0+] Author Profile Page NapoleonInRags replied to Kathleen6674 :

Yeah. The point is that something really bad is going down in Denmark - not that Denmark sucks...

um, dude, it's a reference to a line in "Hamlet."

Is there anything we can do to mobilize against this? There may be legal channels, there may not be... but there have to be other (nonviolent, obviously -- I'm worried about the way this will come across) ways we can stop this.

I'm looking into it...unclear as of right now.

[0+] Author Profile Page Ann replied to lauren automatic :

On Twitter, Melissa Harris Lacewell suggested pro-choicers raise some cash money and buy the clinic!

Others have said not to freak out yet, because the Tiller family owns the clinic and probably would not sell to an anti-choice group.

I am actually calling Planned Parenthood Federation of America to see what we can do. I was angry with Tiller's murder, and I was livid with their bullshit comments, but this is pushing me over the top.

One thing those pro-life idiots need to realize is that once they push too much, anyone with any sense in them is going to stand up and push back. I guarantee you this will be the death of the pro-life movement.

[0+] Author Profile Page Siby replied to Marc :

Please, after you call them, respond back here and tell us what they said. These people are so disgusting, and I'm so upset and angry at the moment.. I'm at a loss for words.

[0+] Author Profile Page Marc replied to Siby :

Someone else might try as well, please. :) I called a few times and was finally patched through to their supervisor in a DC office (someone named Pat) who wasn't there. I would have left message but figured since I am not even in country, it might not work.

If anyone's interested, the number is 800-230-PLAN.

[0+] Author Profile Page lauren automatic replied to Marc :

Yes, please let us know. I'm sure a lot of people here want to do whatever they can to help stop this.

Just finally got to talk with a really nice woman who said she wasn't aware of it and will pass it along.

So, until PP comes up with an answer, what can we do? Any ideas? It's especially frustrating that I can't do anything else at the moment but donate.

[0+] Author Profile Page proudfeminist replied to Marc :

I doubt that those who took part in the pro life movement will step back from it because of the murder. They believe abortion is murder, they believe they are fighting the good fight.

The Tiller family owns the building. There's absolutely NO way they'd sell it to the group that terrorized Dr. Tiller for years.

It's just a publicity stunt by Troy Newman. Completely disgusting and shameless and kind of makes me want to vomit, but it's nothing more than a publicity stunt. Even if Operation Rescue offered the Tiller family millions of dollars, they would never sell to those people.

He's a d-bag, but don't worry. Really. Operation Rescue will stay at their crisis pregnancy center next door to his old clinic.

[0+] Author Profile Page Siby replied to Jen :

I hope that you're right. I'm feeling very unsure, but that's probably just because I had so much faith that the clinic would stay open.. And now look what happened. :(

I really, really hope that you're right.

[0+] Author Profile Page Jessica replied to Jen :

They do own the building? It wasn't clear to me whether it was theirs or rented or something. Gawd, that makes it even worse that OR would come out with a statement like that. Unbelievable.

[0+] Author Profile Page Jen replied to Jessica :

Yep.

This, from the AP / Yahoo news: "The owner of the building and property is listed as J & G Enterprises, formed in 1993. Tiller's widow, Jeanne, is named as the resident agent, or the person who would receive legal papers."

Jeanne would, obviously, never sell to OpRescue. Like I said: stupid, shameless, disgusting, horrible publicity stunt. Link to the news article here.

[0+] Author Profile Page Siby replied to Jen :

ahh. That's very reassuring. Thank you.

[0+] Author Profile Page Ori said:

NO! This is beyond tasteless! The arrogance of that organization knows no bounds! If Operation Rescue purchases the clinic space, it will add insult to injury to all those grieving for Dr. Tiller -- and Operation Rescue knows this.

[0+] Author Profile Page allegra said:

I really hate that it seems this heinous act has turned into some kind of victory for them. When people see that they can get a clinic to close if someone can just murder a doctor, it's like affirming their terrorism. (Of course, this can't really be blamed on his family; as we've discussed, I do fully respect their decision to close the place.) Just the way the whole thing is working out is royally pissing me off.

[0+] Author Profile Page Siby replied to allegra :

If you visit the Operation HATE website, they've actually made a post about the clinic closing. These creeps are CELEBRATING it.

[0+] Author Profile Page proudfeminist replied to Siby :

Remember to them abortion is murder, of course they celebrate it. As long as our viewpoints are different the idea of right and wrong will be different. They think its a great thing because Tiller will not keep "murdering".

The Tiller family should sue to put Operation Rescue out of business for good. I would never negotiate with terrorists. And we should demand Congress and our courts to stop being sympathetic to the anti-choice terrorist movement also.

Here here!

[0+] Author Profile Page Ori replied to Jovan1984 :

You said it!

You know, I thought this would happen. In fact, I predicted it. Once the Tiller family announced they were closing it, I thought to myself "That can't be good. Now an anti-choice group will buy it" and sure enough...

Oh for the love of fuck.

I'd just read about the clinic closing, which is bad enough itself (though completely understandable; Tiller's family is going through so much).

This is just...

Even if they don't actually manage to purchase it...

I have no words.

I need to go find somewhere to scream.

[0+] Author Profile Page Kathleen6674 replied to sangetencre :

You and me both. My first reaction was:

Fuckety-fuck-fuck FUCK.

I am pleased to hear that the Tiller family owns the building. (I certainly hope that's true). No way in hell will they sell to these folks.

[0+] Author Profile Page anon said:

I'm 99% sure the tiller family owns the clinic. Dr. Tiller's father was a family practitioner and worked there for years. His father owned the building.

Dr. Tiller (who originally wanted to be a dermotologist) served in the military and afterwards came back to help his father with his family medical pratice.

It was then that he expanded from being a family doc to an OB/GYN. He slowly expanded his OB pratice to all of the abortion services he provided.

There is NO WAY his family will sell to OR. I think this is solely a publicity stunt.

I'm stuck having the internal debate about whether it is worth it to post everything those scum fuckers make a statement. Are we are fanning the flames by acknowledging the drivel OR spews? Or are we ensuring a preemptive level of awareness about the possible fate of the clinic?

Honestly I would rather see the clinic bulldozed to the ground before letting those people hurt women with another crisis pregnancy center.

Does anyone know yet if the terrorist is a member of Operation Rescue, or which groups he identifies with, if at all?

[0+] Author Profile Page Brandi replied to Rachel :

CNN has mentioned Army of God several times, but I don't know that it's a current affiliation.

[0+] Author Profile Page BackOfBusEleven replied to Brandi :

If memory serves, one of the founders of Operation Rescue founded Army of God after being kicked out of Operation Rescue for being too batshit crazy for them. Operation Rescue tries to distance themselves from Army of God and anti-choice terrorism in general, but they fail horribly.

[0+] Author Profile Page Ruby replied to Rachel :

Keith Olbermann mentioned a connection between Roeder and Operation Rescue. OR sponsored some kind of prayer event, and Roeder posted a handful of comments on their web site or blog relevant to that event. OR claims, however, that Roeder was never an official member or contributor. But we know he at least attended some of their functions.

[0+] Author Profile Page Cyril M said:

If anyone discovers (or starts) organizing efforts to ensure that the clinic is not bought by Operation Rescue or any other extremist groups, please post on here and spread the word. Thanks!

Maybe the Tiller family could sell the clinic space to Rick Ross.

My insides are CHURNING right now! I am torn up inside between crying my freaking eyes out and ripping my bloody desk at work to shreds! I hate them, i hate them, i hate them! They better not even touch that place again. Even if this is just a publicity stunt (I am PRAYING it is, and I'm not even very religious) it is still so disgusting, I wish there was a much more disgusting word than disgusting!

On a related note, I received a really cool email today, titled: "STATEMENT OF PROFESSOR DANIEL C. MAGUIRE AT THE MEMORIAL FOR DR. GEORGE TILLER, MILWAUKEE , WISCONSIN , JUNE 7, 2009"

My favorite portion was this:

"I would use these words to describe George: gentle, soft-spoken, courageous, committed. He also had a quiet anger at American terrorists and outlaws who would not leave him in peace to practice medicine according to American law.

Thomas Aquinas spoke of “the virtue of anger.” He saw the prophets of Israel and saw that they were bursting with anger. He saw Jesus angrily attacking the temple of injustice, overturning tables and Thomas concluded that if these moral heroes were angry, then there is a virtue of anger. It is a virtue, I would say, that most of us lack. Thomas cited this quote from St. John Chrysostom: “Whoever is not angry when there is cause for anger, sins.” Remember that quote. It should be in every church and court house.

Good anger is a virtue, said Thomas, because good anger (respicit bonum justitiae), it looks to the good of justice, and those who are not angry in the face of injustice love justice too little."

So, I am resolving right here and now to be ANGRY, and I will be angry as hell about what happened, about the injustice, about these groups & media individuals who perpetuate the hate & lies, about their ignorant, sexist, thoughtless, careless acts & words, and I will use that anger to do something about this. To stop this from happening again. To spread the truth. To form a stronger pro-choice body of enforced legislation.

Let's all get ANGRY!

Ha. How clever. How VICTORIOUS of you all, operation rescue. God favors those who complete his will, and after all this space of sin and lust should be seen as a gift from God so you may further your holy crusade. You are clearly the chosen.

Go fuck yourselves, you slimy hypocritical scumbags. I'm sure your God will pardon you all for it as a reward for your good holy work.

I hope the Tiller family sues their asses. And I hope they suffer enough protests to make it impossible for them to continue any of their "work". They are disgusting.

[0+] Author Profile Page justsarahbarah said:

Ok, you guys, settle down. The Tiller family definitely owns the building. I know that through my boss, who is friends with the Tiller family.

Also, don't contact Planned Parenthood to get involved with this clinic, because they are not affiliated with PP. That's a mistake a lot of feminists make. Donating to PPFA will not help independent clinics one bit. Donate to them if you're worried about the independent clinics.

I have worked for PP and independent pro-choice groups, and while I love both, it's important to understand the difference between them.

Would you feel it would be shamefull if a pro life person got shot and his facility turned into an abortion clinic ? I would not.

[0+] Author Profile Page somebody42 replied to proudfeminist :

I certainly would if the pro-life person was murdered by a pro-choice person for their beliefs and legal actions (although, I know that's pretty darned unlikely)

[0+] Author Profile Page Feather replied to proudfeminist :

I would feel ashamed if a pro-choicer stooped to the level and tactics of pro-life terrorists.
However, if a crisis prenancy centre just ran out of money and was turned into an abortion clinic, oh my god that would be so funny.
