Each year, the Lambda Literary Foundation honors authors who write on LGBT topics. This year's winners were announced at the end of May.
About the awards:
The Lambda Literary Awards seek to recognize excellence in the field of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender literature. Each year, over 80 judges -- writers, booksellers, librarians, journalists -- assess the entries in more than 20 categories.
I love this particular award because I find it a good suggested reading list for LGBT books.

Much as I respect Thea Hillman as a writer and performer and was moved by her book "Intersex: for lack of a better word" it had nothing to do with the "transgender" category, nor do I think Intersex is in any way a subcategory of transgender. Just because the Lambda awards can't find the right category for the more "minor initials" under the umbrella doesn't mean they should stuff us all together, thereby disrespecting us in totality. Moreover, I was disappointed Katrina Karkazis' work "Fixing Sex" wasn't an award winner this year, since it was, perhaps, the most important work on Intersex people and their complex relationship with the medical community ever written. It was a powerful study of complex conflicting interests--societal, medical establishment, familial and, especially, the Intersex individuals themselves which carefully threaded through this contentious and complex subject and was copiously researched. I can't imagine it being done much better. Hillman's book is a wonderful meditation about body and identity and, while it certainly touches on Intersex issues, the title is an ironic take on whether her condition is even formally considered Intersex (which, in the medical sense, it usually isn't... but Hillman disagrees). They're very different works but I hate to see a much needed, major study on Intersex and medicine being ignored.
James Allen Hall, winner in the Gay Poetry category, was a dear friend and professor at my small liberal arts college when he was writing "Now You're the Enemy." He's an amazing person, and that collection is fantastic, one of my treasured possessions with an amazing inscription from him. It's absolutely beautiful, as is he.
Thanks for posting this. I'm into LGBT urban fantasy, but it's hard to find good stuff in the urban fantasy community alone, let alone a sub-section of it. Too bad only one library in my state has it. -_-
Might have to poney-up and buy it.
