"Unlike the 'Hers' sections of yore--women's magazines, or even Ms. Magazine--Feministing is not shaped by the fear of being offensive or 'unrelatable' for 'the average female reader'...it is head and shoulders above almost any writing on women's issues in mainstream media."
--Columbia Journalism Review
The editors of Feministing will be hitting the road this fall for a five year anniversary tour of college campuses, women's organizations, and BBQ joints. The keynote panel, guaranteed to feature at least three out of the six award-winning editors, will cover a range of hot topics, followed by a lengthy Q&A.
Questions we'll be posing to one another and to the audience include:
- How is the failing economy changing gender roles?
- What's up with the sexual climate on college campuses? Is hooking up really tantamount to sexual liberation?
- Is there such a thing as "women's issues" anymore?
- Why can't an older generation seem to embrace intersectional feminism?
- How can we heal intergenerational and interracial tensions after the contentious 2008 presidential election?
- Is feminism today still a bonafide movement? If so, where's the "moving?"
We're excited to interact, so we hope hosts will see our visits as a chance to really explore the present and future of the feminist movement. We've got some ideas, and we know you do, so let's talk about them.
We'd also be happy to do workshops on blogging for community groups during the day. Feministing sees spreading the word about the activist potential of blogging and educating people about the tools to make it happen as central to our mission. Added bonus: We'll blog along the way, bringing nationwide attention to the work of your center and/or campus.
If you're interested in bringing us to your campus, contact Martha, our tour planner extraordinaire, at polk.martha@gmail.com!

Oh wow!! I'm so really excited about this!! Courtney, I will definitely be emailing you soon.
Awesome! I hope to see you lovely ladies here in the Twin Cities of Minnesota! (*crossing fingers*)
"Why can't an older generation seem to embrace intersectional feminism?"
Just wondering: why is it assumed (in the phrasing of the question) that the older generation is rejecting intersectionality? And do you think they're rejecting the concept or the specific term?
I'm curious about this too. I'm also not sure about the tacit assumption that young feminists embrace it.
Good question. I suppose it's phrased rather provocatively (of course there are young feminists who don't embrace intersectionality and older feminists who do), to get the conversation going. Wala!
It's my impression--underscored by the 2008 election--that many older feminists see race and class and gender as separate issues, i.e. Obama (race) v. Hillary (gender). For more on my thoughts: http://www.alternet.org/election08/88472/
But really, this is just the kind of discussion we're hoping to have on tour!
Hmm. I sort of wonder if, when you refer to "older feminists", you have older white feminists in mind, or if that label includes older feminists or color - I say this because in my (admittedly very subjective) experience, I've found that feminists of color (of all ages) tend to be more invested in incorporating both race and gender into their politics in a meaningful way than feminists who have primarily suffered from sexism (more than racism).
I guess I partially find that question problematic not because I know a couple feminists who don't dig intersectionality, but because I think the mainstream feminist movement is really struggling with intersectionality - perhaps because it has to forcibly incorporate many intersections (trans, race, queer, etc). I don't know. Like you said, it'll make for some interesting discussion during your tour.
I hope you guys come up with a clever or hilarious tour name, like how bands do.
I hope you come to New Orleans!!
My Catholic college better damn well let you on campus! I'll be pestering them come fall
i'd love to see you come to arizona state (largest university in the country). :)
Just emailed the feminist group on campus (Radical Notion) to see if there's any interest. Whoo!
You should consider coming up to Canada and visiting some of the campuses there (Ottawa or Toronto). I think it would be a good opportunity for you to explore feminist issues in Canada, especially since there are a fair number of Canadian that read this site and Canada is very much effected by what happens in the US.
Please, come to UW Madison. Or, Madison in general. This campus is badly in need of you! I am 33 and not in college, but I would love to come and see you guys! :)
Is Canada in play here too? Should those of us at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia start fundraising?!
Courtney -
Will you and the crew pleasssssssseeeeeeeeeeee come to Old Dominion University in Norfolk around September or November? Mariam was there a few weeks ago and had a great time (just ask her!). I missed it but would love to hear ya'll speak!
Please? I'll even cook for ya'll! Italian sausage meatballs with spaghetti for meat eaters and tofu meatballs with avocado salad for non-meaters?
Here's a vote for the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA!
Only public university in the US named after a woman! And this year it finally has a female president! And started a women's studies program this year! It could use a feminist boost!
Jessica came last spring and it was amazing!
Exclamation point overload!
