Today I'm going to talk about two little books. It's Memorial Day weekend coming up, you're probably going on a lil' trip, need to take lil' books.
The first is called The Little Book of Meaning and it's by Laura Berman Fortgang. Here's what I liked about this book: it includes a wide range of diverse religious and spiritual traditions to answer some of the deepest and most existential questions about why we're here and how we figure out what we're supposed to do about it. Here's what I didn't like about this book: it didn't have any kind of feminist or activist lens. I mean the author definitely talks about interconnection and the need to help other people out etc., but it just didn't feel like she'd ever been in a women's studies class or thought about the ways in which intersecting oppressions really influence how people interpret this idea of "making meaning."
The second is Poems from the Women's Movement by Honor Moore. It has this awesome cover, as you can see. Totally dig it. It's an amazing collection to have on your desk and just pick up when you need inspiration, or to remember how frickin' far we've come, or even to chuckle a little at how truly literal some of the 1970s feminism was (lots of goddess references and birth metaphors here people). But seriously, this is an amazing book. I feel so happy to have it in my collection.
Happy Thursday!
