I've heard statistics that an enormous amount of Nascar fans are female, as compared to other sports in the US. Anyone know if that's true, and if so, what's that about?

I don't know about other female sports fans, but I despise NASCAR (and all forms of motorized vehicle racing). I love American football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, softball, baseball, figure skating, swimming and diving, track and field,...well, you get the idea. NASCAR? Is like watching traffic. Even worse, it's about wasting huge amounts of natural resources and pumping toxins into the environment, all in the name of "sport." Color me unimpressed.

The other non-sport that I despise for both its lack of excitement and the environmental damage is golf. I was born and raised in Arizona. We live in a desert, folks, yet huge amounts of water resources are committed to golf courses. That infuriates me.

I did the unthinkable, and googled it. Women make up 42% of the NASCAR audience. I mean, I like sports plenty, and I like that there are more women fans, but...Nascar. Okay...

So, that's cool. But I still hate the language the article used.. and the mentality our society still has.
The article points out at least two instances of sexism, and treats them like they're funny. Like "oh, the guys dont know that she's a good mechanic, isn't it funny that someone has to tell them."

I long for the day when women are equally represented in all fields.

The article rubs me the wrong way, too. Not only is it mostly about the reactions she has gotten, but the author of the article also seems to insist on assuring the reader that Chatten is a "girly-girl." I'd have liked the article to be more about her accomplishment and her own thoughts about it and less about mostly male reactions.
