Quick Hit: US journalist Roxana Saberi released from jail

Via MSNBC:

A lawyer for a U.S. journalist jailed in Iran says she has been freed from prison after an appeals court suspended her eight-year jail sentence.

Abdolsamad Khorramshahi says Roxana Saberi is "now out of jail."

She was freed after an Iranian appeals court cut her eight-year jail sentence for spying to a suspended two-year term.

The development came a day after an appeals court held a hearing on the case of Saberi, a 32-year-old journalist who has worked for the BBC and U.S. National Public Radio.

You can background on Roxana Saberi's case here and here.

A big woot woot! to her release. I was very afraid they would keep her for the entire sentence.

pretty amazing that an Iranian govt was more respectful to a prisoner than our American govt would have been not too long ago.

Is that supposed to be some sort of joke? Because it's not funny. Roxana Saberi is lucky that she holds American citizenship, and has the full weight of the State Department and the US media on her side. If not you can rest assured she'd be in a far worse position. It's pretty insensitive to crack wise about Iran respecting its female prisoners in light of this:

And the large amount of women's rights activists held in Iranian jails.

The fact that Roxana Saberi was arrested in the first place as a "spy" suggests the respects Iran has for foreign and female journalists.

this is great news,...

I hope they also let my friend Esha Momeni come home,

and that they release women's rights activists that are currently being held.

And that they repeal all the sentences of all women's rights activists:

I remember that blog about Esha. I'll keep her and all the women's rights activists in my thoughts and prayers.
