Love it! Two of my favorite women, and one of my favorite things to do.
I can't believe some people have a problem with bare shoulders. Oh no! Scandalous! Next Michelle will want to vote!
HAHAHA! She cracks me up every time.
Setting aside the fact that this, yet again, demonstrates how women's bodies are considered public property, this also reveals how confused the media (and average Americans) seem to be about what they consider "appropriate" (whatever THAT means).
I wish the media cared less about her arms and more about her professional accomlishments and contributions to society.
/sigh
Mocking stupid advertising has always been my greatest joy in life. To see someone else do it who is A) actually funny and B) woman-friendly is just fantastic! Love!!
That said, I haven't been able to watch the latest video :( Why do these videos never work on my computer? I tried going to the CurrentTV website -- nothing! I always have to go to YouTube!
God damn I am seriously in love with this girl. The last twenty seconds of that I almost peed myself. Plus, it was brilliant. Thank you, Sarah!
Agreed. Shes brilliant and innovative!
I can't believe how many women like to gang up on other women - as though commenting snarkily on Michelle Obama's bare arms as inappropriate somehow makes her less of a first lady, a good woman, an activist.
When is the last time someone gave a shit about what a man was wearing? This is Hillary all over again. Ladies, unite! Defend each other instead of being a mean girl!
While I agree with the sentiment it's inaccurate to infer that males in politics are not assessed on what they wear or other such stupid trivia.
During his first campaign it became a news item that Clinton his haircut on the LAX runway (aboard a plane, obviously) delaying flights. This was of minor note until it was reported that it was done by a Beverly Hills stylist for some silly amount of money. Clinton was cast in the role of fop by the media.
This was echoed when Edwards got a $400 haircut.
President Obama himself has caught shit for the price of his suits.
Edwards was also constantly referred to, in various ways, as a "pretty-boy" or "heart-throb" candidate.
The media talks about Sen. Kennedy's weight on a semi-frequent basis too.
I think it's the anti-liberal bias of the media. If you're a democrat or a perceived "liberal" then you're fair game for stupid commentary.
I agree with you, but also consider the fact that most of the examples you gave concerned the price or general upkeep of a man's "look". I still doubt anyone would criticize a woman for spending an exorbitant amount of money on a haircut (unless, of course, it was on the taxpayer dollar) or getting it done by a Hollywood stylist. These kinds of things are expected for women. I'm focused on the fact that Michelle Obama is criticized on morality. She's seen as inappropriate because she's a mother, a woman, someone who's supposed to be "modest".
"I still doubt anyone would criticize a woman for spending an exorbitant amount of money on a haircut"
...but people freaked out when Sarah Palin's wardrobe budget was revealed, which falls under the same category of "image upkeep". She was torn apart for spending way over the allotment of a "Main Street USA" citizen.
There is no way to win in the eye of the media.
Aside from the fact that this is hilarious and that it's incomprehensible to me how people find that showing arms is inappropriate, I can't believe so many programs used "the right to 'bare' arms" so many times... Seriously, twice is forgivable, but more than four times? C'mon.
Yeah, the lack of originality is almost as annoying as the sexism. Great Haskins piece. I'm now off to do some push-ups while putting together my Harvard application....
I looooove Sarah Haskins. I'm glad she also pointed out that WE DON'T FUCKING CARE ABOUT WHAT MICHELLE OBAMA IS OR ISN'T WEARING. She's a badass political figure. Bam.
I'd like Michelle to run for fucking president some day!
America is so prudish... we think she's exposing too much because her ARMS AND SHOULDERS are bare? I mean, if she was wearing low cut tops I would at least get it, but shoulders?
Gotta love Sarah Haskins tearing this stupid obsession apart : )
Didn't you know? Bare arms encourages fornicating. Think of the young, impressionable children!
*clutches pearls*
hehehe
Wow... I haven't been keeping up with coverage of Michelle Obama's fashion choices because, well, I don't care what she wears. Anyway, I'm shocked that mainstream media is actually punning on the 2nd amendment-- I totally thought Haskins made that joke up for the first minute of the video. Also, I seem to have missed the memo that we've been transported back to the 1950s, in which bare arms = naked.
I will say that, while I generally think of clothing as a trivial issue, it does have a certain political dimension. Obama is actively refusing to present herself as the stereotypically demure politician's wife and that takes guts.
Would it be too much to ask for mainstream media to shift the focus with regards to women's bodies away from merely being physically presentable to a focus on being physically healthy and actually... *able*? They're absolutely not mutually exclusive.
I would like for women to feel comfortable to have "guns" that weren't just for show.
OMG,what is the issue with Michelles arms? This is why I dont watch ET or any of that crap. What is this the Taliban? They treat her like were in Afghanistan. Maybe a burqa would be appropriate? Maybe we should paint the white house windows black so no one can see her? Its sad that we can expect to see womens breats and accept that, only in as much as its sexually appealing to a male, but anything else is deemed unnecessary? Barbaric and just fucking stupid!
Oh my God, her arms? I never even knew the media was obsessing like this...
She's the freaking FIRST LADY, she's achieving so much and all people can focus on is her...arms!?
And people on the street calling it inappropriate? WTF? What year are we living in here?
I truly despair sometimes...
Sarah Haskins being funny and awesome as usual.
Michelle is SMART. I truly believe her intelligence hasn't been highlighted enough. Personally, since it's being discussed, I like how she dresses. To me, the fact that she's not blowing insane amounts of money on most of her clothes (and OMG, Fox News said she wore the same outfit TWICE! how dare she!) indicates that she has more important things to think about..while still looking great. All these people are just a bunch of haters. Most highly educated first lady (correct me if I am wrong) and people are talking about her arms. That says a lot.
w/r/t the media frenzy over Obama's arms -- I mean wow, we as a society *are* really confused about what we want women to be doing, aren't we? It seems like women in the public view are either entertainers, in which case the barer the better, or politicians, in which case zomg cover up those arms, you slattern! And of course both are supposed to be "role models." We just can't do anything right here.
w/r/t Sarah Haskins -- awesome, as usual :)
Wow and I thought my public high school (with its huge population of pregnant teens) was the only one who thought that showing shoulder would distract all the boys from learning cause it was sexy and inappropriate.
The rhythm of the phrase
"Michelle Obama arms"
is precisely the same as that of the phrase
"got Bette Davis eyes"
Listen. Is that just a coincidence? I think not.
I love it! Sarah Haskins is hilarious. I especially love the part near the end where she goes over all the important things Michelle Obama has done and then adds "and then have sweet fucking arms." Kind of sums up how we should focus on her actions instead of how she looks. Unfortunately this happens to pretty much all prominent female public figures and it makes me even sadder to see women focusing on this stuff as well.
And since when was showing arms so scandalous. The Victorian era? Come on people!
Although I guess it's good that strong arms on women are now seen as attractive though. I used to swim and I still do weights and have big shoulders and arms as a result. I got made fun of for it back in high school.
And isn't it rather telling when one woman wearing a tank top can criticize another woman's choice to go sleeveless...
I personally think Obama looks fantastic and classy. She's got a great style, and I don't get what the media is getting so hyped up over. If she covered every inch of skin, they'd whine about how she dresses too matronly.
I have to admit folks, as a Group Fitness Leader (i.e. I teach aerobics and "toning" classes) and a personal trainer in training, I love the whole thing about Mrs. Obama's arms. Ladies of all ages and sizes are coming in to the gym MUCH more willing to try resistance training. Usually we trainers have to beg women to do a few bicep curls. Too many women believe that we'll end up with "ugly" muscles if we lift a weight. Not true! Ladies, we need to be doing weights to be strong and healthy, to look good, to burn fat and to keep our bone density up as we age.
And now Mrs. Obama is making it ok to do bicep curls and tricep extensions! YAY!!!!!
Bless her for setting this new trend.
And hey, I'm finally fashionable for once in my life. Tee hee, I'm kinda diggin' that ;)

wandergrrl... Interesting thoughts but I wonder... The President of the United States is clearly a servant to his people. His room and board, his meals, his trips on Air Force one, his clothes are all paid for by tax payers. Therefore, is it possible that the First Lady also represents public property? I'm not suggesting women are property, but certainly women in public office are property of the hard working tax payers. It just so happens the First Lady is a trend setter similar to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (http://www.articlesbase.com/fashion-articles/can-we-compare-michelle-obama-to-jackie-onassis-759861.html)
More importantly, I agree with you that news is filled with plenty of fluff. There's no doubt that news, broadcast, and the Internet all gain financially from it too. At the same time, must all information be so serious. Imagine if everything on television was serious and bleak. Wouldn't it also alienate a lot of people?

Sara Haskins == Teh Awesome.
I particularly love the "49% == we don't give a shit" portion. No one cares, except the people who make money by trying to create scandals.
I wasn't even aware that first ladies weren't supposed to wear short sleeves. That is the stupidest thing I've heard is a long, long time.
Sorry, "is a long, long time" = "in a long, long time."
I was just so flustered I forgot how to type!
