The NY City police officers that were charged with the rape of an intoxicated woman have been indicted.
A grand jury in Manhattan has voted to indict two New York City police officers in the December rape of a woman who claimed she was sexually attacked after the officers escorted her from a taxicab to her apartment in the East Village while she was intoxicated, according to law enforcement officials and other people familiar with the case. The grand jury last week charged both officers -- Kenneth Moreno and Franklin L. Mata -- though the details of the indictment were not immediately disclosed, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The officers, who have been on modified duty, stripped of their guns and badges and working in administrative assignments, are expected to surrender on Tuesday morning and face arraignment in criminal court.
Ugh, what a scary case.

I'm just glad something is being done. When I first heard about this incident, I (being my cynical-ass self) was sure that the scumbags would be able to get away scott-free.
This is terrifying for me. I am not scared of very many things, but the idea of calling on some authority for help - the police, a doctor - and being alone with them or trusting them in my home and then being attacked is really, truly scary. Hearing this just makes me more aversive and anxious about those kinds of situations. I am glad they are being indicted. Kudos to this amazing woman for coming forward. Can't have been easy.
I could not agree more.
I agree with all of you - it is terrifying and I'm glad something is being done about it. They need to be held accountable just like everybody else. I think they should be reminded everyday how they abused their power and how they contribute to a culture where even those who are supposed to protect us can't be trusted. I assume they take some sort of oath like doctors do, to protect and serve...?
what bothers me (apart from the rape itself) is that in the article, it says the prosecution is looking into "a theory" of rape regarding when a person is too drunk to give consent. since when is that a freaking THEORY?!?!?!?!?! that the legal system doesn't plainly call rape, well, rape is frankly unsettling. also, can someone with more legal know-how than me explain what "forcible sex" might be, if not rape?
Based on watching Law and Order, I'm pretty sure that the prosecution's "theory of the crime" just means their version of what happened. So they are prosecuting them based on the idea that they raped an intoxicated woman, rather than based on the idea that they did something else.
Like in Law and Order sometimes they change their theory of the crime in the middle of the episode from "he killed her because he was jealous" to "he killed her because he wanted the insurance money." It doesn't mean its only theoretical that its wrong to kill someone for either of those reasons.
This is especially scary to me, since I live in the same neighborhood :/ I'm glad something is being done about it, though, and for what it's worth, the couple of dealings I've had with the police here have actually been surprisingly helpful (not that that mitigates the awfulness of this story, it's just good to know that there are decent cops out there too, I think).
