Someday Jessica, I will garner enough support to be able to invite you to Utah Valley University to speak. We have a small but wonderful Gender Studies program, and we could use some speakers like yourself.
I have sent the contact info to the powers that be and we are going to work on it over the summer.
That would be awesome!
Damn! Why couldn't it be a month later? I'd love to have gone!
I wish you could come to Springfield MO, sometime. It sucks being in the Midwest.
I was actually supposed to speak at Drury U. a couple of weeks ago but was incredibly ill and couldn't make it. I believe we're rescheduling for the fall, tho!
Yay! Please announce it when you do! I check this site regularly and I don't want to miss it...plus I want my books autographed.
Will this be your only West Coast and/or Bay Area stop (slash are you by any chance going to come to Santa Cruz)?
Yeah, afraid I'll only be in the Bay Area. (The following day there's a Yes Means Yes event)
If it's ever possible, you should try to come to UC Santa Cruz. We have an amazing Feminist Studies department (Angela Davis and Bettina Aptheker are two of our professors) and our campus bookstore sells Full Frontal Feminism!
Really? Revolution Books? Not only is it a storefront for a Maoist cult of personality around Bob Avakian, but: "The Revolutionary Communist Party's policy that 'struggle will be waged to eliminate homosexuality and reform homosexuals' wasn't abandoned until 2001." Why not Bound Together or Modern Times or City Lights?
Ummm...my publisher set it up, so I don't really know what the deal is there.
come to Baltimore!!
Pleaaaaase come to Portland : D
Yes, the maoists of the cultish RCP used to hold the position that homosexuality was "a product of capitalist decadence".
Perhaps Jessica needs to do a lap around the far left.
Come to San Diego! We kind of suck, but do it anyway. I have an irrational fear of freeway driving and don't know how to get anywhere anyway. =(
Jessica will be speaking in New York on 4/29 (tomorrow)!
Jessica Valenti will be speaking at Barnard College on Wednesday 4/29 about her experience co-editing Yes Means Yes and her writings on feministing. There will be a reading and an open Q&A session following the talk.
The talk will take place in the Held Auditorium (304 Barnard Hall) at Barnard College, 3009 Broadway, at 8pm.
This event is free and open to the public!
come to los angeles
Yeah, I'm not sure you know what you're walking into, Jessica. Check the RevBooks site (http://www.revolutionbooks.org/) and you'll notice that the top category is "Works by Bob Avakian."
Head down the rabbit hole a little further and you'll find his newspaper, Revolution (http://revcom.us/). The April edition included a lengthy essay on "The Role and Importance of Bob Avakian." Excerpt:
Revolution Books staffers were the agents provocateur in the rioting that followed the fatal shooting of Oscar Grant by BART police on Jan. 1 (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2009/01/08/MN2N155CN1.DTL).
... all of which is not to say that you should cancel your appearance or anything. But maybe you should have a talk with your publisher and explain that associating you with a extremely marginalized, cult-like organization is probably not the best strategy for selling books to the general public, especially in an area that has plenty of independent, non-cult bookstores, as cited above.
Drat! Jessica Valenti is right around the corner from me and I'm stuck working at Jupiter? Are you KIDDING ME?
:(
Well, if you're hungry after your book signing, may I humbly recommend Jupiter Beer, only a few blocks away at Shattuck and Allston (I won't take it personally if you don't end up there- Berkeley's a big place!)?
Good luck! Also, you're wonderful and I hope to catch you next time you're in the Bay Area!
At me the revolutionary offer in general was born - to replace all books and textbooks in the world with nurseries, not to spoil in a brain to mankind the unnecessary information.
And in general, the report has liked, has learnt a lot of new in respect of innovative tendencies the next decades...
