Jay Brannan, Soda Shop

This is one of my favorite songs, from one of my favorite movies, Shortbus.

Jay definitely has a certain sense of humor. The video could be considered NSFW, since he's shirtless and possibly sitting on a toilet seat. Just a warning.

I'm posting this because I think it's a great song. Nothing deeper than that.

Lyrics after the jump.

The sidewalk is rushing at my head again
I'm lying on the street in the rain and wind
From doing forward rolls down Avenue A
With my guitar on my back don't let it end this way

Somehow I dialed my cell
I didn't know I could get service in hell
How quickly can you get here
Don't know where I am dear
Finally the world actually seems to be revolving around me

Chorus:
Shoo-be-doo-be-doo-wop
I overdid it at the soda shop
Thanks for being my girl at the
I don't know when to stop sock hop

You held my head over the edge of the bed
I remember it now but at the time I thought I was dead
You put a pan there and held back my hair
How could I repay you for saving me and my hardwood floor?

And when the world stops spinning 'round
I picked up pan above the ground
I read my upheaves much like tea leaves
They said it's over so get sober or you'll die....
Again......

I LOVE THAT MOVIE.

Me too! When I first heard about it I thought the whole Real Sex thing would be obnoxious and just a desperate attempt to be edgy, but was surprised that you so quickly get used to it.

yeah i know what you mean. i think the cool part is that a lot of the people involved in the movie had little to no experience in acting! my gf told me that the auditions consisted of people sending in tapes, telling stories of an interesting sexual experience that they had. SO COOL.

I liked that song at the very end. I don't remember much about it, except it was when the lights were out. Everyone was lighting candles, the song was kind of slow and intimate, then suddenly a brass band (or marching band?) busts into the room and the song just explodes.

I love it when songs build and crescendos like that. Does anyone know what song was? Or who played it?

Allow me to answer my own question, thanks to the google and the wikipedia, the singer was Justin Bond and the marching band was called "The Hungry Marching Band".

The youtube even has the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4HEVtKvi0M

Well the IMDB thing explains his Facebook message from this morning.

I LOVE Jay Brannan!

And while "Soda Shop" is just a good fun song and not that deep, his "Goddamned" is so hauntingly beautiful and thought-provoking that it still makes me shudder when I hear it.

I liked the movie for being generally sex-positive and queer-supportive, but I had a serious problem with the portrayal of women's sexuality. If I remember correctly, of the main characters, there were only two women: the dominatrix who was victimized when her boundaries were broken by a partner(again, if I remember correctly), or the woman who was unable to orgasm until the end of the film. I didn't think that it contained very positive messages about or for women. If it was supposed to be an organic exploration of sexuality, it was missing a huge piece of that pie. I only remember a peripheral character who seemed to just dig sex from the beginning of the movie until the end, and I don't think she had any lines. But again, haven't seen the movie since its release; I just know I was pretty perturbed after I saw it.

While I definitely think your views are valid, I would say another way to look at it is simply to see that many films make points by focusing on problems. By picking two characters that are sexually wounded and/or dissatisfied (and perhaps more than sexually), the film allows the viewer to experience the trials and journey of these two women as they search for satisfaction. If the film started off with an already sexually satisfied and comfortable woman, it is much harder to portray what aspects might have lead to her being so content, what societal and self-held norms she had to break to get there.

I think that sexually unsatisfied (and perhaps sexually inexperienced) women watching this film will be better able to relate to the two main characters on their journey than to a character who is obviously already doing great sexually, but who knows how?

God, I hate that movie. Of course the woman who has never had an orgasm is, at least a decade after noticing, *still* obsessing about it to the point of sacrificing her professionalism as a therapist and unnaturally blurting it out to anyone and everyone. Because god forbid anyone not meet the dominant expectations of sexual satisfaction and *not* be killing themselves over it.

Mostly though that movie was just too scenester-y for me. I felt like I was supposed to be hooked in by the novelty value and the titillation. But I don't find sex *that* interesting and the dialogue and characterization certainly couldn't compensate for it, so yeah.

Also, they really portray the altern sex scene like it's some kind of oasis. It's not. People in the altern sex scene are every bit as willing to fuck you over and disrespect your boundaries all the while talking about how anti-oppressive and sexually healthy they are.

Yeah. I got issues.

I would argue that saying the film simply represents a woman tormented because she did "not meet the dominant expectations of sexual satisfaction" is unfair.

The main character of the film is not bothered by the simple fact that she cannot orgasm and feels like society expects that of her. Through the film it is quite obvious that the woman is unsatisfied in general with her sex life - one could even say her whole life - and is living a lie by telling her partner (and herself) otherwise. One could even say that she is turning against society - she is trying so hard to maintain that the heteronormative and stereotypical relationship, sex life, and sexual stimulus is enough to make her happy. Through the film she slowly goes against mainstream society by opening up to different experiences to find her OWN sexual satisfaction, the culmination of which is physical orgasm, which symbolises the fact that she is finally discovering a sexuality and sense of self that is right for her.

On a less insightful note, I would also argue that just because a woman is upset about the fact she cannot orgasm and willing to go to great lengths to try and orgasm does not mean she is just chasing a societal expectation. It's completely believable that reaching orgasm is important to her simply because she would like to experience that kind of physical pleasure.

Yay! I love this song, and "Shortbus!" Thanks for posting :)

um, mr. Brannan needs to change some sort of settings on his browser of choice. Shortbus is on the IMDB, it's been there for years.

I thought JCM decided to be jokey about the women character's sexuality and grave toward some of the men's because it's usually treated the opposite by Hollywood.

It's a little sitcommy but i'm still a fan. I actually had a customer the other day named Matthew Perry. I didn't explain why that was funny.

The similar relation represents feminism as luxury of minor value and waves away from female experience as unimportant. It essentially misinterprets feminism in the spirit of "women's issues", instead of as the political approach by a life. Feminism it is not simple the list of questions which become easy can a new variant of female sphere of influence, or, that is called, activity "approaching" for women. The feminism is the approach based on female experience which calls into question into patriarchal models of the superiority in all areas of a life, whether it be visiting of glamour night clubs or a life in a monastery.

The feminism also is not a policy “only for women”. It is the approach born by women which can and any man interested in public changes, also, as I, the white woman should use, I can use anti-racist approaches. So, for example, I want, that politicians recognised the power of women, and in the USA for this purpose the concept of gender rupture meanwhile as men and women vote has been used. However the policy considering women only as voters, conducts to danger to reduce feminism to opinion of the majority of women which comes to light in interrogations.
