Climate Justice at the Intersections

There are so many incredible people doing activism these days about climate change. I'm especially excited about those acting at the intersections of racism, classism, health issues, and the environment, like Van Jones and Majora Carter. Check out this great video profile of Kari Fulton, Brower youth Award Winner and general badass.

Knowing that Kari and so many others like her exist make me feel safer and happier. I can almost imagine this huge generation of new, savvy environmental activists coming up under folks like Majora and Van. Wahoooo!

And don't miss out on other great video profiles over at the Environmental Justice and Climate Change Initiative.

Go her! From the video, I don't see what exactly her work is getting people to do, but I have no doubt that, with her awesome attitude and energy, they're doing it.

That's really awesome, thanks for posting this. Her energy is really really inspiring to me and to any activist in any cause.

The day after Obama appointed Van Jones as the head of some green job collar initiative, Jones was on TV saying "99% of the cops in the bay area are doing a great job".

Perhaps some of his fans here can explain his political transformation.

Kari is AWESOME. I got chills when she said, "Just think of all the change we can make... in one day." I LOVE that she and the larger environmental justice movement connect the science and policy with the everyday lives of people, predominately of color and in low-income communities, who are most affected by environmental degradation.

I've visited Major Carter's organization, Sustainable South Bronx, before (which is incredible), and learned there that a quarter of all South Bronx residents suffer from asthma-- particularly children, young people, and the elderly. The whole explanation is much more complex, but essentially this is because of the many highways and improperly contained trash and recycling facilities zoned in the South Bronx (something like 70-80% of all NYC trash processing facilities are there, from what I remember). The level of air pollution in the South Bronx is unrivaled among NYC neighborhoods.

This obvious and vivid intersection between politics, race, class, environment, and health only came alive for me, though, when many of my South Bronx students started missing school for health reasons related to asthma. Ostensibly, they received less instruction and lower grades due to their absence, and have less of a chance of graduating. It's all so tightly interconnected, and Kari, Van, Majora, and others are doing an awesome job of making sure people know that.

I think I might be in love with her. :)

For deeper understanding of the reasons of change of a climate now and its forecast for the future detailed studying of fluctuations of a climate in the past is necessary. Such works are necessary for forecasting of the future changes of a climate and an inhabitancy current millenium. The tendency of climatic changes is observed not only in climate change, but also in sphere of a condition of a surrounding reality, such as flora and fauna.
