Hurricane Hazel: 88 year old mayor of Mississauga, Ontario

This woman is awesome! Thanks to Lisa for the link. Apparently this show is kind of like the Canadian version of Colbert.

I love it. Hazel is absolutely inspiring.

On another note, the Rick Mercer Report has been around faaar longer than Colbert. ;)

[0+] Author Profile Page Dominique replied to Chelsa :

Hear, hear! And he could teach Colbert a thing or two, to boot :)

Love it! Rick Mercer rocks! And so does Hazel.

And I will probably get flamed by all the Americans, but Rick is WAY better than Colbert. He constantly gets our politicians to do silly and hilarious things...

Or helps our opposition leader move into their new official residence:

And he is an opening gay man, a fact which bothers no one! I love being Canadian.

My favourite recent one getting politicians to be silly is the Bud Lite 'dude' commercial parody...

Yeah, wow, what baller. I can't believe she's 88 years old. There's a nobel-prize winning economist who teaches at my university who's almost 90 also, and his mind is still sharper than any 30 year old you'll ever meet.

[0+] Author Profile Page billiam345 replied to billiam345 :

what A baller I should say

[0+] Author Profile Page Dominique replied to billiam345 :

ummm... hope that doesn't refer to testicles... Mayor Hazel makes it pretty clear those are totally unnecessary if you want to be active and strong :)

[0+] Author Profile Page lemonchips replied to Dominique :

Baller refers to basketball, as in basketballer. Like, she has it goin on.

Oh, and he also talks about Obama's foreign visit called 'Obama touched it'

Quite possibly the coolest woman I have ever seen. What an inspiration.

I’m so thrilled you posted this, Miriam! It’s always nice to see a little Canadian love from Feministing show up on my RSS feed.

Wow that was awesome. Also I have never heard of five-pin bowling before (I had to wiki it) but those tiny bowling balls are kind of adorable.

Rick Mercer is more like our John Stewart.

I second that. Colbert pretends to be on the right of the political spectrum, while both Steward and Mercer approach things from the left.

I love Rick Mercer.

Also, that lady is some kind of awesome. I wish I could bring her to Ottawa to run our city too. :)

Hey, I'm in Ottawa too!

And yeah, Rick Mercer is definitely closer to Jon Stewart.

I third that! "Mayor" O'Brien could learn a thing or two from this woman for sure.

[0+] Author Profile Page sheis replied to Nicole :

O'brien would choke on all his woman hating nonesense if he ever met this woman.

I can't believe he's been 'mayor' for so long when he's done nothing, we need our own Hazel, for sure

[0+] Author Profile Page tsarmina replied to Milena :

Hey, wow, I can't beleive there are so many other people from Ottawa on here! that's pretty awesome. Yeah, mayor O'brien is a moron. I wish Hazel was our mayor.

What an awesome woman! She reminds me of some of the older women in my family.

Cool. I'm kind of missing Canadian TV now. (I almost watch no TV now).
Yay 5-pin bowling! My city doesn't have it.
And I'd heard of Hazel but I didn't know she was 88!

my hometown! hilarious. mississauga is a horrible wasteland (to me), but of course there are twinges of hometown pride in me too.

i'm definitely not the biggest fan of hazel, but she is definitely a strong woman.

Haha, I love Rick Mercer (and respect Hazel, although not such a fan of some of her policies). It is nice to see some Canadian content on here. You should all check out the other stuff he gets our politicians to do like sleeping over with the Prime Minister, or going to the hardware store with another PM or rolling a joint with a famous author--he is by far superior to Colbert or Stewart.

Not to mention skinny dipping with Bob Rae (former Premier of Ontario).

Second best old lady ever, first goes to my gram.

That was amazing, I'm in tears...

yesss, rick mercer is golden canadian goodness.

this woman is so sick. She's like super woman!
Rick Mercer is amazingly hilarious and he's from Newfoundland and he's gay.

btw 5 pin bowling sucks so badly lol or rather I suck so badly AT it

Wow! That was awesome! Go Hazel! I don't know anything about her policies and whatnot, but as a person she seems really cool!

I love Rick Mercer SO much!!

Things like this just make me so happy and proud. Hazel is amazing I want to be her when I grow up!
I can't imagine running Mississauga is an easy task.
And well rick is rick so you can't say anything bad, the man is a legend. I reference his pieces all the time in everyday life.

[0+] Author Profile Page Dominique said:

Yup, Hurricane Hazel is fiery and cool. She's also pretty right-wing. However, I am willing to bet dollars to donuts (Canadian ones, both) that if you sat Mayor Hazel down and talked to her about her experience as a woman in politics, and a woman with an actual personality in general, she would want to lead the next Take Back The Night march in a heartbeat...

Yeah... although you also have to consider that American politics are to the right of every other Western democracy. So the Canadian Conservatives are more like the American Democrats than Republicans.

What a great story!

Kudos to her and Canada

Ontario represent woooooo!

[0+] Author Profile Page Borea said:

If every mayor was as great as this Hazel, well, I wouldn't be a supporter of term limits anymore!

Say, how's the real estate market in Mississauga? 'cause if there is room up there...

[0+] Author Profile Page Tiffanie said:

Amazing! I love her!!

Why isn't this woman president of the world??

[0+] Author Profile Page liz said:

Love it! and "this show". Heh, The Colbert Report is more the US version of the Mercer Report. You American's are so funny : )

Mayor Hazel was lifetime friends with the Toronto's author and activist Jane Jacobs. What a pair!
