Today the state legislature overrode the governor's veto of a bill allowing same-sex marriage, and so Vermont became the first state to legislatively guarantee all couples the right to marry.

Two states within a week! Perhaps the tides are turning. Plateaus, back-steps, yes there will be. But this is a good sign, and it feels GREAT!
Very surprising! Nice work VT!
Nice. So that means we have Hawaii, Vermont, Iowa, and Massachusetts that recognize gay marriage, right?
And Connecticut?
Off by one, Brown Trash Punk. Hawaii's supreme court voted in favor of marriage equality in 1993, then a constitutional ban passed in 1998 & the legislature banned same-sex marriage.
Your count should include Connecticut, which pretty quietly legalized marriage equality last year.
Check out NPR's interactive map of marriage laws state by state, which was updated today to include Vermont.
New York also recognizes, but does not perform, gay marriage. So if you get married in Massachusetts and move to Brooklyn, you're still married.
So proud of my school-state!
You can listen to callers on Vermont Edition right now at Vermont Public Radio, just fyi.
One more step in the right direction!
Way to go Vermont! First Ben and Jerry's ice cream, and now legalized same-sex marriage, woot!
That's two states! Woohoo! *does a happy dance*
Wow, awesome! I started grad school around the time that San Fran's mayor okay'd gay marriages, and I remember proclaiming that it would be legal throughout the U.S. by the time I finished. Well, I've got about a year left, so I'm still hopeful. Makes me want to go kiss my partner!
Yay!!!! *joins Ariel in the happy dance*
First Iowa, now Vermont... let's hope this becomes a trend!
And you got the DC update! Oh, what a day. :)
Yay! I hope this recent trend keeps up...
Its really pathetic that in the "land of the free" in 2009 there's only four states where gays can marry.
i just teared up a little bit :S wasn't expecting that. and i'm not even American, but so happy for all of you :) Australia has a long way to go when it comes to same-sex marriage.
I love Vermont. It's the state that always has and always will hold the right to secede from the Union, but still fought for Lincoln. And Bernie Sanders.
