Obama administration decides to sign UN gay rights document
In further evidence of Obama's departure from Bush era policy, the State Department announced last week they would sign on to a gay rights UN document. The document calls for the decriminalization of homosexuality and 66 countries have signed on so far. The UN drafted the document in December as a stand against human rights violations based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
The Bush Administration had previously argued that the document contradicted US law, but the Obama Administration disagrees.

This just made my day. I love our new administration!
YESSSSS!!!
:D
That's the only good way to express my glee at the moment.
I have a crush on this man. I want to clone him and bring him to Canada.
Haha!
Hoorah! A leader that is willing to legally recognize gay people as equal humans!
So... I know I identify as a lesbian... but, I have A HUGE crush on Obama right now. YAY him!! =D
Great News!!
Awesome.
...then you are not a lesbian if you have a HUGE crush on a man.
Ummm, not sure if your comment is snark, but crushes aren't always about sexual attraction. I have crushes on lots of people because I admire them, not because I want to get them in the sack.
I love when an internet commenter/complete stranger has more authority on assessing a person's sexuality than the person themselves.
I do not have a crush on you.
But I do have news for ArtByMoretti: I think we all have Obama-crush moments, even those who won't admit it.
I had a pretty big crush on Obama. Thought I would have known by now if I were gay.
I can only hope that this means that the areas where he Bush Admin thought US law contradicted this are going to be going away. It is sad to note that in 30 states it is legal to get fired for being gay. While this means it is not technically illegal, it does mean to be gay and out can leave you jobless which leads to what I call Bad Things.
Perhaps we will not only "legalize" homosexuality but also view these people as Human Beings and not as 2nd class citizens.
I love it. The only problem is this is a statement released by the UN, not a declaration or convention or anything really worthy. Anyone can put there names to a statement and it means nothing in the eyes of the law, they are non-binding and whimsical.
Also, its sad to note that the Organization of the Islamic Conference wrote themselves a counter statement, basically saying human rights are great, but gays shouldn't be protected by them. This counter statement has received almost as many signatures as the UN's (in the 60s).
Don't mean to be Debby Downer, this is still saweet.
Anyone remember Rick Warren?
Yay, our government now agrees that homosexuality shouldn't be criminalized. A minute step out of the stone age and in the right direction.
Now, call me a cynic, but what about something that will actually impact people's lives. I know, how about doing something about DOMA which defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman for purposes of all federal laws, and provides that states need not recognize a marriage from another state if it is between persons of the same sex. That would really be something to get excited about.
The president Barack Obama, admittedly to the former struggles from the nicotinic habit, welcomed acceptance of the bill which it shortly to sign. In particular, this measure will give for the first time a foodstuff and medicines of administration of powers on regulation that occurs on tobacco production, demand of change or liquidation of toxic substances, and to block introduction of new products.
