Event: Girlhood in America

Check out this free panel, Girls, Girls, Girls: Girlhood in America, a week from today, at The New School. I'm geeking out a little bit that I'm going to share the stage with rockstar Kathleen Hanna:

Plus, my friend Felice is going to talk about the invisibility of women artists in reality television, Rock of Love, and Fame. How could you miss that? (Unless you live in Boise, in which case, I totally understand. hehe).

The deets:
THURSDAY, MARCH 26TH, 6-9 PM
WOLLMAN HALL, 66 W. 11TH ST., 5TH FLOOR

Complete bios after the jump.

FELICE BELLE is a poet, playwright, educator, and the former curator and host of the Friday Night Slam series at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York City. Recently, she created original poetry for the play History of the Word produced by the Vineyard Theatre. She writes the Stakes is High column, which appears on Sundays at http://www.crucialminutiae.com/.

KATHLEEN HANNA is a musician, photographer, writer, and feminist activist. She was a founding member of the feminist bands Viva Knievel, Bikini Kill, and Julie Ruin, and she was a member of the collective that produced the zine Riot Grrrl. She is currently a member of Le Tigre. Her writing has recently appeared in Robin Morgan's anthology, Sisterhood is Forever.

CLEOPATRA LAMOTHE is the Youth Development Coordinator at Bushwick Community High School (BCHS), an alternative transfer high school, serving overaged, undercredited youth ages 17-21. She currently serves on the Safe Schools Committee, avidly working towards creating an inclusive and safe space for the LGBTQ students of color who attend BCHS. She is an active member of the Audre Lorde Project's "Safe Outside the System Collective," and is the producer and organizer of "Zami Like Me: Queer Womyn of Color Cipher," a two day event celebrating queer womyn of color.

COURTNEY E. MARTIN is a writer, lecturer, and educator. She has spoken about feminism, body image, and youth and political culture at schools across the nation. In addition to being a regular contributor at Feministing.com, she is the author of Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters: The Frightening New Normalcy of Hating Your Body and is currently at work on a book about young people and social change, tentatively titled Do Greaters: The Kids These Days and How They're Changing the World.

KATHLEEN SWEENEY writes about pop culture, gender, and iconography. Her engaging, multi-media lectures turn a humorous lens on pop icons, trends, and media-making. Her award-winning video art has been screened internationally. She is a Professor of Media Studies at The New School and author of Maiden USA: Girl Icons Come of Age.

MCKENZIE WARK is the author of A Hacker Manifesto and Gamer Theory and is an Associate Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at Eugene Lang College and of Sociology at the New School for Social Research. Among his courses is " 'The Girl' as Media Image," an examination of "not only popular culture and theories of gender, but also women writers and artists who have dissented from this figure, from Kathy Acker to Courtney Love."

The panel will be moderated by ANN SNITOW, Chair of the Gender Studies Program

I really wish I had the funds and time to travel. I would love to see this. Kathleen Hanna is someone I've looked up to for a long time. I'd love to hear what she has to say. I'll just listen to a Julie Ruin/ Bikini Kill/ Le Tigre mix while I fill out scholarship applications.

The Girlhood in America event yesterday was amazing! Each panelist brought such an interesting perspective on the portrayal of women or "girls" in media.
