What's at the top of your netflix queue?

An open thread for those of you who are avid movie watchers. I'm always looking for new ideas for my netflix queue, and it's also an interesting peek into people's lives and tastes.

Currently at the top of my netflix queue:

1. Fire
2. Wonderfalls: Disc 1
3. Chutney Popcorn

So readers, what's at the top of your netflix queue/movie watching wish list?

I use Netflix to catch up on television series that I missed the first time around. Right now I'm watching 30 Rock and The West Wing. Next up I'm going to hit Northern Exposure. I also like to get anime series, because I'm a big nerd. But I rent so much that movies are almost always severely throttled. Usually I have to wait around three months to see a new release.

I just watched Northern Exposure. It's so great. I was a lit major at the time (now graduated) and the very subtle references to some of my favorite fiction (Carson McCullers, for instance) really thrilled me. I hope you enjoy.

We went on to watch Twin Peaks, which proivded a nice Northwestern contrast, actually.

I love threads like this. I'm very nosy.

1. On the Waterfront
2. Sophie's Choice
3. Iris

Haha, I love you a little bit for starting this thread :) I usually use Netflix to fill gaps in what I've seen of the bodies of work of actors or actresses that I really like. . .or to watch TV shows that I used to love, but don't have the money to just go purchase. That said. . .my top three (with TV seasons counted as one) are:
1) The fourth season of Felicity
2) Witness
3) Trainspotting

1. Big Bang Theory season 1
2. West Wing Season 2
3. Sports Night complete series

I watched the first few years of WW when it first aired, and now I'm starting over from the beginning in order to see the whole series.

I love it that I'm not the only one using Netflix mostly for TV. I'm not a huge movie person.

I don't belong to Netflix, but I get a lot of movies from my library and Facets. Here's what's on tap this week:

1. Stomboli
2. Teeth
3. But We Have the Music (screener for CIMM Fest 09)

My husband and I are in the middle of Season 4 of 24. It is better than I anticipated -- not a bad action/adventure show if you don't take it too seriously. We're not on Netflix -- we just buy the DVD's, though.

As for next on the list ... The Departed and The Big Bang Theory (TV Sitcom) are the next two on our list to rent/buy for viewing. With two small children, we don't get to theaters much, and we missed Season 1 of Big Bang Theory.

Stray Dog! That's up at the top of mine, too. Unfortunately, Rope is kind of gimmicky and underwhelming.

"Fire" is very good, but "Water" and "Earth" are both absolutely AMAZING!! Mira Nair is in my top three of favorite all-time directors.

Anyway, enough of my two cents' worth:

1. Man on Wire (added immediately to #1 following its winning the award)

2. Voices of Iraq

3. Malcom X

1. The Wire (season 1)
2. Amores Perros
3. Funny Face

When I got Netflix I decided to be more disciplined about my movie choices. Now my queue rotates TV shows, classics I've yet to see, and foreign films or documentaries. I figure I'll see the big box office hits at the theater or on TV eventually. My SO and I still hit Blockbuster on some free weekends and fill up on stoner comedies and gory action movies.

The whole strategy works great- I've ended up with new book choices (for example, the beautifully crafted Out Of Africa by Isak Dineson) and I have a greater appreciation of some pop culture (not to mention that my trivia skills are now unstoppable).

Oh, Abby. Amores Perros is SO not good. Of course, it might be one of those things you should watch to see exactly what not good looks like.

[0+] Author Profile Page feminanimal replied to abby_wan_kenobi :

That's a really good idea. I think you could also use the separate queues function to do that really effectively. This is like my third post on this thread, so I'll stop, but I'm going to go reorder my queue now.

My Zip (Canadian version of Netflix) cue looks like this:
1)Big Night
2)Wallace and Gromit: Three Amazing Adventures
3)So I married an Axe Murderer

I'm not sure if it's the same with Netflix, but with Zip, putting these items in an order of preference seems to have almost no bearing on what they actually send you. ;)

What, no complaints about the privilege inherent in having access to Netflix? ;-)

I don't have Netflix but I've been using iTunes to watch Dollhouse.

[0+] Author Profile Page RedPersephone replied to MissKittyFantastico :

I saw previously (by your username) that you must be a Joss fan, so I'm happy to know you're watching Dollhouse, too! What do you think so far? (Not to hijack the thread or anything...)

Just finished Frozen River, and loved it! Highly recommended.

Right now at the top:
Waitress
Under the Same Moon
Chop Shop

1. Bride and Predjudice

2. The Hobbit

3. The Henry Rollins Show, Season 1: Disc 3

1. Brazil
2. Happy-Go-Lucky
3. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

[0+] Author Profile Page feminanimal said:

1. Friday Night Lights, season 1, disk 4
(I am loving this show and I generally dislike football and red states)

2. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
(never seen it, kind of excited to)

3. Gray's Anatomy
(The monologue by Spalding Gray, not the tv show. I'm a big fan, but he may be an aquired taste)

I wish we had a film club, with so many good movies on everyone's lists! I am totes looking forward to Mad Men S2 to come out, and am always looking for a good new tv show (I'm thinking about Big Love?)

[0+] Author Profile Page emmakitty replied to feminanimal :

Big Love is an AWESOME show! It's really complex and I don't think it could be called feminist, but it's amazingly well-acted and highly addictive.

Baby Jane is creepy as hell. Also hilarious. Be sure to IMDB all the anecdotes about the behind-the-scenes rancor between Davis and Crawford after you watch it. Also, I recommend Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, which has one of the best introduction-to-protagonist scenes ever and the added bonus of the incredible Joseph Cotten.

3. Eagle Eye (was this movie good?)

[0+] Author Profile Page emrez49 replied to emmakitty :

Eagle Eye was entertaining & enjoyable, but a tad predictable. It's worth renting, but if I had the option of going to see it in the theater again, I'd take a pass.
