It is always good to read about how some of your bad habits might be good for you. When news that organic dark chocolate was good for you in small qualities, I did the happy dance. And although, I am personally not at risk for stroke, I am still happy to hear that drinking coffee may reduce the chances of women having strokes.
The finding stems from the tracking of both coffee habits and stroke occurrence among tens of thousands of American women across nearly a quarter century. And it adds to earlier indications that coffee might also offer some protection against diabetes, while not raising the risk for heart trouble. However, the current evidence also includes a cautionary note for smokers: Their habit seems to wipe out whatever protection long-term coffee drinking might otherwise confer.
"Many people have been very concerned that coffee might actually be a risk factor for stroke, that it might, in fact, increase the risk of stroke," said the study's co-author, Rob M. van Dam, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston. "But here we saw that it might end up being beneficial rather than detrimental."
So drink up that coffee.
PS-I totally quit smoking, did I forget to mention that?

YEA YEA YEA YEA YEA yea yea yea.
Congratulations Samhita! I can relate to your struggle and your glory. I quit 5 (?) years ago after smoking for more than 20 years. Hardest thing ever.
Celebrate - with some organic dark chocolate and a cup of coffee! I'll join you.
OHHHH this is good news. I had heard something similar before about having one cup of coffee can be good for your heart. As someone who can't seem to start their mornings without coffee, hearing things like this makes me feel good and not guilty about my caffeine addiction. I'm sure there are downsides to it as well-- for instance caffeine has a correlation with osteoporosis in women, right? All I know is my coffee is delicious and fair trade and organic and I'm not grumpy :)
PS- congrats on quitting smoking!
Hooray for coffee!
It should also be noted that coffee is not as bad for one's teeth as is popularly thought. While it probably isn't the most rigorous scientific study ever done, Food Network's "Food Detectives" tested several liquids on (cow) teeth to see which would stain the worst. Coffee was actually on the low end, while the worst was red wine. In fact, tea was demonstrated to be worse than coffee in terms of staining.
Take it with a bit of salt, of course.
I like a touch of cream in my coffee, personally.
Hehe!

Huzzah!! I know it must be hard, but you can stick with it!
I hope more people follow suit. :)
Congrats Samhita!!!!!
Good for you, Samhita!!! Now, can you give me the magic key to quitting? I've tried it numerous times and the longest it stuck was 6 months. I've tried cold turkey, cutting back and then quitting, and recently I've tried NRP(nicotine replacement therapy). I think one of the hardest parts, at least this time around, is that while I know I SHOULD quit...I don't really WANT to. I could go on and on about how the history of smoking relates to feminist/minority issues and why that's an important reason to stop, but I just want to live!
Congratulations on quitting smoking, Samhita. It's a big accomplishment, and a testament to your strength. Be proud! What are you going to do with all the extra cash in your wallet?
It's nice to have a possible vice turn into a virtue. Coffee is so important for so many Americans, and since we're all apparently oversexed, over-eating and over-spending (or so I've gleaned from the media), it's good to know we're doing something right for once.
And well done on quitting; my parents are working on quitting since the new fsc cigarettes became widespread.
This is good news, but does the same health benefits hold for decaffeinated? I used to drink caffeinated but started having weird and completely unprecedented panic attacks because of it. Just a green tea bag would send me over. I read that its connected to anxiety dsorder and one of the things to avoid if you have it.
Congrats on quitting smoking... this weekend marks two years for me!
Congratulations on quitting smoking! That is a big accomplishment. I'm sure it was difficult (it was for me!), so anytime you think you just have to have one, remember how hard it was - you don't want to have to go through it again, do you???
