Roe v Wade Anniversary Blog-a-thon

So, I am late to this since I have been on the road for a few weeks, but I wanted to point your attention towards a week long blog-a-thon at Amplify, that is ending tonight to celebrate the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. I must say it is full of really compelling pieces by a diverse group of men and women on why Roe is so important for us.

Check it out and if you decide to post something to it please put the link in comments. Also, if you have any posts you have done in the last week about Roe v. Wade, feel free to promote them here as well.

I didn't write anything new this year, but this is my piece last year about why I believe in a woman's right to choose, published at Wiretap Magazine.

An excerpt about why I vote pro-choice.

I vote pro-choice because I believe that women have the right to choose what happens to their bodies. I vote pro-choice because I love myself, my friends, sisters and my communities that would be deeply hurt by any more cutbacks to their reproductive rights. I vote pro-choice because I believe that women have the right to live healthy lives and be treated as citizens that get basic human rights. I vote pro-choice because I believe women should not have to die from lack of access to reproductive health care. I vote pro-choice because I believe we can win, because I believe we can take the debate back and we can organize a successful movement for reproductive justice. I vote pro-choice because I am sick of women having to continue to stay poor and if one choice can help them get out of the cycle, I support it. I vote pro-choice because I believe government that doesn't allow half its constituents basic human rights--is not a democracy--and therefore treats women as second class citizens. And finally, I vote pro-choice because I don't believe we live in a time we can afford to not be pro-choice.

Why do you vote pro-choice?

I vote pro-choice because I believe in basic human rights. I vote pro-choice because denying a sentient, rational, emotional being control over her own body because some non-sentient, non-thinking, emotion free entity that happens to have human DNA is in a parasitical relationship with the her is simply absurd. I vote pro-choice because the theocratic nature of the anti-choice movement scares the bejeesus out of me. I vote pro-choice because there are women I care about, and that I simply don't hate women would be enough reason for me to vote pro-choice. On the other hand, I also vote pro-choice because a government that has the power to nationalize women's uteri has the power to do to me pretty much anything against my will.

I vote pro-choice because, by any measure, it's the right thing to do.

I vote pro-choice not only because I believe in a woman's right to choose. I vote pro-choice not only because children should be wanted. The main reason I vote pro-choice is because I have no right to say otherwise. I have no right to dictate people's decisions. I have no right to take a quick glance at their lives and decide what's best for them. No one has these rights because they are not rights. They are wrongs. I have been in situations where I was lied, manipulated, and pressured. All of them were negative. I will be damned if I will let that happen to other women when the stakes are higher.

I vote pro-choice to give women freedom.

i vote pro-choice because the government has no right, earthly or otherwise, to dictate what happens inside my body.

It comes down to this: It's not my place to make decisions for other people, and I think that our society should be structured in that manner.

I vote pro-choice because I trust women.
I vote pro-choice because children should be blessings, not accidents.
I vote pro-choice because I am pro-life, *even* for women.

As part of an internship, I write for the Legislative Gazette. We're the paper that covers the New York state Legislature. On the 36th anniversary, I had the awesome pleasure of meeting and interviewing Sarah Weddington, the lead attorney who won Roe v. Wade. I was so excited not only to shake her hand, but to cover the event for the paper since a lot of politicians, who I'm preeeetttty sure don't read Feministing, would get to see what's up with the reproductive rights movement. The only part that sucked is being objective, meaning I had to shed some light on the other (anti-choice) side. The only way to link is to the whole paper, but the story is on pages 12 and 16 if you feel like checking it out.

although i am anti-abortion, i will probably always vote pro-choice. i believe in reducing the number of abortions though extensive comprehensive sex education and by making contraceptives affordable and available (including plan B). making abortion illegal would be a very wrong move for our society.

i vote pro-choice because no woman should ever have to have an illegal back alley abortion in an unclean, unhealthy and possibly dangerous environment.

I vote pro choice because it's none of my damn business what other women do or do not do with their bodies.

Personally, I would probably give any unwanted child I had up for adoption instead of having an abortion. But that's just me.

It's none of my business what you do with your body. Just as it's none of the government's business, none of the church's business, none of your neighbor's business or the lady who sits next to you on the bus or your parent's...NO ONE'S.

I know I hate it when people patronize me and presume that they know better about me and what I should do than I. And I hate it when that happens to other people. ANd that's why I'm pro choice.

Amen!
