What the fucking fuck?
Wow, inappropriate!!!
My god, that's horrifying! WTF? I hated it from th SECOND it began -- woman (who looks far too old for this to be a first exam if that's what they're implying) in a vulnerable situation, doctor seeming to purposely make her umcomfortable -- fucking UGH doesn't even begin to approach this. Who would fucking make such a thing?
Not to mention which, any time I had an exam by a male doctor, there was always required to be a woman nurse there too.
Okay, I watched a view more and can't watch anymore. Too fucking depressing. Women hate sports! Women don't matter! To make the guy an asshole insensitive ob-gyn speaks volumes about their hatred for women.
The only good thing is there are almost no comments on the videos, so almost no one is watching this shit.
What the hell is this - she is not a virgin? Foul? Red flag? Female ref? WTF!!!!
I apologize in advance if I'm covering things most readers already know about, but the red flag is a "challenge flag" thrown by coaches in the NFL to trigger an instant replay review of a disputed call. The head ref then enters the instant replay booth, which looks like this or this.
I didn't know - thanks!
Thank you for the explanation! Eurgh, what a disgusting, offensive vieo.
Ah. So entities like this "Global Sports Fraternity" have men who need to use WOMEN to make fun of other men because sports causes men to do stupid-looking shit. As it is indeed stupid-looking to stick one's head in a black box in the middle of a live football game.
Are there ANY female NFL refs? I'm gonna guess no. Assholes.
We know, norbiz.
"We" may be a tad universal; I don't assume universal NFL viewership, especially given the number of question marks, rhetorical or not, in Annie's comments.
I Googled it. But thank you for educating us.
I did not know. I suspected, but did not know.
I am a man.
I had no idea, actually. My thought was, "What, he's playing magician and pulling handkerchiefs out of her vagina?"
Wow...just...wow.
I thought it was funny. Not because of the reason it was supposed to be, but because of how misinformed the idiots who made this are. And of course, guys probably think that's exactly how an exam goes, minus the football stuff. I wish schools taught sex ed better, as opposed to letting myths create false ideas about it.
News flash: the hymen can break from a lot more than being poked, and it never truly goes away.
Even ignoring the lack of taste and general misogyny, it is not good marketing. It doesn't make clear sense, nor does it convey the product message. This offends me as a woman AND a marketing professional.
Maybe she could have fooled this idiot with the artificial hymen that has been ubiquitous on the feminist blogs of late.
What the fuck was this even advertising?
http://globalsportsfraternity.com/
I dared to go there. "GSF: Your home for sports comedy."
And in their first featured video on the homepage, Dr. Leavenworth compares the uterus to the red zone, aka from the 20-yard line to the goal line in football.
GREAAAT.
baaaaarf!!!
How does that even make sense? What's the "goal line," the fallopian tubes? Guys, if you think you actually get all the way up in there when you "score," ur doin it wrong.
I second the opinion that this is unintentionally funny. I'm guessing the point is that men think about everything in terms of sports, even their regular jobs, but seriously? the correlation between typical ref actions and the gyno exam is actually almost clever, but what are they reviewing? torn hymen? Evidence of STD? That's not funny, except meta-wise in the sheer laughable ignorance of the writers/directors/whoever.
Something tells me that making this video is the closest these folks have ever come to an actual vagina...
(Thank you for the transcript!)
UGH. Just, ugh, ugh, ugh.
I refuse to even have a male gyn. Just, ugh. I can't imagine someone thought that was appropriate to air.
Of course I agree the ad is horrific - but I'd like to add that I see a male doctor for my annual exams and he has never been anything but friendly and professional. It is understandable and yet unfortunate that messages like this one foster mistrust of medical personnel. Discrimination against male doctors simply because they are male is counterproductive to the feminist movement.
A little OT, but just for the record, I don't think someone preferring to have a female OBGYN is really discrimination -- someone could have all sorts of reasons for having a preference like that when it comes to reproductive health. I agree that it's important to realize that medical professionals really should be professionals and aren't like the guy in this video, but I don't want to bash anyone's personal choices.
I'd like to add that not all male ob/gyns are creeps like the guy in the video. Mine is wonderful. I've always felt very comfortable around him, even though I was hesitant to see a male doc when I first going for annual exams.
I don't get it. Is it supposed to be an ad, a PSA, or just humorous (which it fails at, but regardless)?
I still just don't get it (as to what they are selling - I get the misogyny loud and clear!) Are they selling the idea of virginity as something you get called out on? That lawyers are liars? That a doctor's job is NOT to listen and believe? That a close-up inspection by a woman in a ref uniform is hot? That the doctor is clueless enough to need a second opinion about an adult woman's sex life? What do vaginas have to do with football? Has there ever been a female referee for the NY giants, let alone a female player in the NFL? Does this doc examine all of the cheerleaders too? THat the doctor is macho for having a job where he looks at vaginas all day? What does Eli Manning think?
Refs work in groups, but they're not team specific. I assume that the league determines which refs will be at the games, since they assign best crews to post-season games.
And Eli Manning probably thinks "I shouldn't have played like Tony Romo last Sunday." Maybe "I hope I have a decent receiver next season."
As for the ad itself? Failed attempt at humour aside, I have no clue what they're going for.
Oh my god, there's 7 of them.
http://www.globalsportsfraternity.com/doctor/
I'm not sure which I hate most.
As a Philadelphian, I'm horrified and embarrassed on an additional level... is there something about my town that made them think this "doc" should hail from Philly? WTF?
And as to what they're selling... it's a "sports comedy" site... it's whole reason for existence is to be funny. Cross post to failblog, anyone?
Philly fans are known to be a bit over-excitable about sports. Perhaps that's why he's from Philly.
Annie, it's advertising a sports site. The gist is that in the NFL, when a call on the field is in dispute, indicated by a coach throwing a red flag, the refs go into a viewing booth that looks similar to what this doctor looks like peering under the gown. Often someone else comes in to look, and then a call is issued, either "play on the field stands" or "play on the field is overturned." In this case, it's "overturned," meaning the woman's sexually active though she said she's not. I think the point is, as someone else said, that men think about sports all the time, even during their day job.
I knew the red flag meant that a coach was calling for an instant replay, but I didn't connect that to the drape around the camera/drape around the patient similarity. Now I won't be wondering why they didn't call a yellow flag instead.
Awful, awful ad.
I went to the site and still do not get WHAT they are selling. I think everyone here agrees, though, that calling a vagina "foul" is just bullshit.
Bizarre and creepy for all the reasons discussed above. OTOH, lying to your (normal, non-creepy) gynecologist about whether or not you're sexually active does seem like something worth calling out--couldn't it potentially defeat the purpose?
Don't forget that girls are all actually "sluts", even when they say they're not.
I don't think you can tell that someone is sexually active just by looking. If she had been sexually active with a man recently and the doctor looked at a swap under a microscope, he might see sperm. I'm pretty sure you can't tell with visual inspection, though.
I don't think even a gynecologist could tell without doubt if someone was sexually active, but during my one of my last appointment I had a small sort of tear/split caused by something else and the doctor asked me again if I had been sexually active or if I knew what had caused it. However, I guess her real concern might have been sexual assault since she works on a college campus and based on the tone and expression she took on when she asked me.
My understanding of the term "sexually active" is whether or not you've had sex recently. It's not the same as whether you're a virgin or not. Am I wrong?
If I'm right, then what on earth could you actually find from a physical examination that would confirm sex had taken place? I can't think of anything, bar semen I suppose.
The whole ad is utterly horrible though. A [highly educated] woman in a vulnerable position being called a liar (and indeed if she were sexually active... what a slut). Plus what everyone else said.
That's my understanding of the term as well.
Having thought about it after being confused as to what, exactly, the "doctor" would have seen in his examination to call "foul" on the woman's answer, I think the ad is (intentionally or unintentionally) drawing it's "humor" from a few different attempts at shaming/exposure of sexual behavior:
-Rupture of the hymen (my intial thought given the prominence of the red flag), but that doesn't really make sense since it can be broken in a variety of non-sexual situations or may be absent entirely.
-Evidense of an STD which is negatively associated with the stereotype of multiple partners.
-A bruised vulva or "loose" (grr...) vagina indicative of penetrative activity, implying rough or frequent sex.
-Virgin/"Old maid" shaming, given the woman's age and assertation of not being sexually active. Within the "logic"--if it can be called that--of the ad, *IF* she is to be believed then she must be masturbating in a manner that makes it appear that she has been having sexual contact with a partner. Since there's the idea that "real women don't masturbate" this woman is thus portrayed to be lonely and/or frustrated, and since the only details we know about her are her achievements in education it is implied that that is the source of her dissatisfaction. Or she's "just a slut" who can't get any otherwise, har-har.
Bleagh. It's too early for this shit.
I'm also a huge Philadelphia sports fan, and this untasteful parody totally ripped off of this ad from the baseball season:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj_E-dG6Yrs
Clearly, I want this man to be my proctologist! It totally sucks that these guys took this really funny ad and had to make it into something gross and offensive. At least they portrayed the ref as a woman - that's something you'll never see on any given Sunday!! :)
Thanks for this. The clip makes more sense. But I have to say that I find a lot objectionable about the original too. First, we have a black doctor, he says he almost flunked out of med school and thought he'd get into COACHING? Are we trying to feed the afirmative action reactionaries? Or just assume that really all black men can do well is play sports?
Second, getting men to have proctology exams is notoriously difficult, in part because of the homophobic connection of having a guy stick something in your ass. Somehow, I don't think this ad will help.
Iguess I dodn't think either ad was particularly funny.
Perhaps I only found it funny because I am a die-hard Phillies fan. But I did want to reply to your thought about the black doctor who dreamt about coaching. Actually, the negative stereotype throughout sports history is that black athletes lack the intelligence to be in positions of authority - like coaching or being a quarterback, etc. That sort of thinking often pigeonholed black athletes into occupying the 'workhorse' role on the team. That's why the 2006 Superbowl between the Colts and Bears was so historic because not only was it the first time a black coach made it to the Superbowl, both teams had black coaches - which meant that inevitably it would be the first time a black coach would WIN a Superbowl! (and the first time a black coach would loose too) The first time in 40 years... pretty amazing.
Haha, I guess I got a little carried away. But I guess what I'm trying to say is that for him to choose a coaching role sort of refutes the point you were trying to make. Cheers!
Clearly you're not a big sports fan. If you were, then you'd know how much has been discussed in recent years about the LACK of African American men in coaching roles. I think your reading is reaching quite a bit to assume that because the actor's African American, the spot has anything to do with affirmative action. It's more likely to speak to the common assumption among sports fans that all of us could be the coach. Seen in that light, the ad's pretty funny.
Um...I didn't think it was an anti-affirmative action ad. I'm just pointing out that having a black doctor discussing almost flunking out of med school (but having gotten in and now gotten a job) is not a very positive statement. And while I am aware that there is a dearth of black coaches (I am, in fact, an avid baseball fan and have been since age 9), I still think having a black guy refer to the sports field as his backup is not a great association to make if you are trying to promote more progressive views of race. But my biggest objection to the whole thing is the public health angle. Could we have an ad that did more to discourage prostate exams? But I don't mind if YOU think it's funny.
I watched the others. Some of them could be funny: the same doctor describes a healthy pregnancy in terms of how great a footballer the unborn could be. The woman is horrified. It might have been funny if she were excited too, but as a result, the whole series depicts women as outsiders to sport, and as victims of male interest.
The "sexually active" one is the worst.
Sure are a lot of angry fat chicks commenting on this. My guess is that the lack of dick in your lives has caused you to become bitter old hags.
A fat girl with a good personality is nice, but an obese man hating sloth is about as unattractive as it gets.
Drop some weight, turn off Dr. Phil and and get a sense of humor.

"We have had some issues with certain people complaining about Sherdog users organizing mass hate on them via telephone calls, messages, etc etc. Please be aware that shit like this is completely against the rules.
DO NOT posts links to people's personal blogs, youtube accounts, webcam sites, etc etc in an attempt to mass make fun of said person. This is something we take seriously, and would rather deal with it before it happens, so that we do not have to ban multiple people at a time."

It's NEVER lupus!

That video... Wow. There are no words. Only angry head shaking will do.

PS, you want to write to GlobalSportsFraternity and tell them that an Eagles-crazy obgyn is completely unfunny? That a woman's uterus is not an okay way to explain the red zone? That degrading women for the sake of "sports hilarity" is uncreative because women actually watch and understand and love sports?

ARGHHHHHH
i wrote to them and got a very insulting e-mail back from them.
The adult in me is very bothered by the fact that terms describing body shape, like sex, gender, race, sexual orientation and mental (dis)ability, is supposed to be insulting. The kid in me is amused that trolls make these blanket assumptions that so often turn out to be wrong, (have you ever met some of these bloggers??) and when they're not wrong, the person targeted may well embrace their status as whatever-it-is. Yeah, geez, I am such a girl.
This reminds me of my favorite recent troll at Feministe, who said: "Jill is a fat lesbian. How do I know this? I just do."
Really? Really?
I know, right? I love how trolls think that the absolute most insulting thing they can say to (or about) a woman is that she's fat and/or frigid. It's especially amusing considering the physical and social state of the majority of such trolls...
Duh, it's funny 'coz sluts always be lying about how slutty they are!!!!11
Jesus Christ people. Try a little harder when you make your manly sports ad next time.
You just made me realize... in order to make their oh-we-so-manly sports ad.....
THEY NEEDED A WOMAN.
Boom, take that GSF
Apart from all the other things wrong with this ad, I thought the myth of hymen as freshness seal was well and truly busted.
It's busted, but nobody knows because the hymen isn't even talked about in school (as far as I know.) So the myth prevails. People like knowing that a girl is easily notable as virgin or not. So the myth is still breathing, alive and well.
I would also like everyone to know that me along with a lot of you I'm sure are the exact opposite of what the troll assumes we all are. As some of you might know (i have issues with my skinniness.)
I guess I'm the only one that thinks this is funny. I don't think it's meant to be taken literally that this guy is examining her hymen and delivering her shocking news.
As Brandi wrote above: this ad is making fun of the way that some people think about sports all the time. It could be a man or woman, but in this case it's an african american gynecologist. This Doctor is a Philadelphia Eagles obsessed lunatic, and as a football fan myself, I find this to be hilarious.
The one where he talks about delivering a child cracked me up:

Maybe you're the only one finding it funny, because you've never been in that uncomfortable position of having your vagina on display, so you didn't cringe when the ref just walked in there and started checking you out. Or maybe because you've never felt that you needed to lie about your sexual activity, and how embarrassing it is to be called on it.
I get what the joke is and I can see the humor in people who view the entire world through the perspective of sports, growing up with sports people all my life, but it's not delivered in a funny way. It's uncomfortable and completely blind to what it's actually saying, and more than that it doesn't make any sense. It's totally male, and turns the female in question, as well as her situation, into a meaningless prop.
I guess I'm the only one that thinks this is funny. I don't think it's meant to be taken literally that this guy is examining her hymen and delivering her shocking news.

oh, the video and everything about it and surrounding it are "teh suck" obviously. but i just wanted to interject that not all male gynos are bad. i have one that i LOVE. i've NEVER felt even a little uncomfortable with him and he was the first one i ever saw. he's totally supportive of my relationship with my girlfriend and has several lesbian patients who he has helped with fertility.
anyways, just a shout out to those men and doctors who get it right. if anyone in the dallas area wants his name, i'd be happy to pass it on. just drop a line on the blog.

I always wondered what would get me to start commenting here and sure enough, it's the forum dummies at the website I work for.
I understand the UFC is not a major topic of conversation around here but not all of us fighting fans are brain dead sexists with too much time on our hands. So, on behalf of Sherdog.com and myself, a loyal reader, I'd like to apologize for the idiotic ramblings of our forum bottom feeders.
Also, if you ever decide you need a sports section, my resume is pretty damn solid.

I checked the site...and this is what is really offensive:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNKC1pZ_SKE&feature=PlayList&p=0FD4C66CC8324C02&index=1
All I can say is wow.
When I first started watching this, I noticed that the woman was acting nervous and figured they were just trying to portray the nervousness of a first exam.
But once it was over, I realized that the reason we were supposed to think she was nervous was because she was trying to tell a lie and was going to get caught! It was a guilty nervous, not a vulnerable nervous.
Ok, so the point is that the woman is in fact sexually active? I'm not into sports, so I have difficulty in understanding the "message" and the references.
But now after getting that cleared, I still don't understand. What is funny about it (I suppose it's ment to be funny)? He asks her, she lies (and why would she do that?) and he calls for a "replay"/second opinion? Why would he do that, does it matter to him if she's not telling the truth? It's just bad, bad, bad, not funny, not nothing. It's sexist and idiotic. She graduated from law school and she would lie to her gyn about being sexually active WHY? The doc would know, so is she just portrayed as being plain stupid in spite of her "fancy" education - or what?
I second whoever said "misogyny".
Of course not all male gynos are bad. Like not all men are sexist assholes. But this one portrayed here isn't a very good exemplar, and I'd wish there were some male gynaecologists that would object the way they are portrayed here. It's like when female nurses are portrayed as sexkittens first and foremost: it undermines their professionality. This ad/whatever undermines male gynaecologists' professionality.
Since I saw this the other day, I haven't been able to stop thinking about this question... Why do gynos put a sheet over your legs during an exam? Urologist don't try to shield men from seeing their genitals being inspected. Are they trying to protect us from something?
Empathy, yea now that you mention it - that's kind of weird. However, it's not usual practice in Denmark, we lay there without the sheets. And I actually think I'd find it pretty damn strange and alienating not to be able to connect visually with what was happening.
Maybe it's because it is believed, that women want to shield off what is happening? To distance themselves from it? Because it's embarrassing or shameful or something? I don't know - maybe you Americans should ask your doctors about that the next time?

Having worked at the Medical Board and with victims of sexual assault by doctors, this Ad is disgusting and offends me deeply...
Just outrageous...
