All the living former, current and Presidents to be got together on Wednesday at an unprecedented White House gathering. It's hard to imagine these five men getting along, let alone making small talk.

Caption Game!

Clinton: Hey Barry, you're surrounded by Bush.

It is kind of like the game of "One of these things is not like the other".

Obviously it is Carter. He is really short.

Jimmy Carter looks all uncomfortable off to the side. I wonder what they all had to say to each other.

Its because Clinton was making bunny ears on Bush Jr. and reminded Carter of the Bunny Incident.

Carter is definitely not accepted by them. Obama wouldn't let him speak at the convention. It's because Carter supports peace and human rights and the others know they have to shun him.

Carter and Bush are old and have a "fuck it" attitude and are happy off to the side staring into space. Bush Jr., Clinton, and Obama all crowd to the center and act like they are having a great time together. Obama has both Clinton and Bush Jr. looking at him while he acts like he's better than them. He is clearly the best politician.

C-c-c-combo breaker!!

BO: who just grabbed my ass...
W: don't look at me man, may hands are right here.
BC: it's great havin' long arms.
GB: wow, he really does work out.
JC: walking away now....

and yet they did: they talked about the rug. I guess small talk about how the economy sucks would be weird.

I'm sure they got along just fine.

And I agree, we just like to be witty and clever at the expense of others sometimes =) They're all grown men, they're experienced politicians, and they're civilized Americans....

Maybe that's what makes us skeptical?

[0+] Author Profile Page sapien replied to TheBrawn :

Actually, I was making a reference to the fact that they have all been pretty much the same president (except for the O-bomb, of course). Because, they all had similar regressive foreign policies. Carter in the Middle East, Bush Sr. in Central America, and Clinton and Bush Jr. in the Middle East. But, yes, I suppose that they were civil (to each other, not to the public) as well.

[0+] Author Profile Page TheBrawn replied to sapien :

Genius, I love it.

Obama is the same as the others. Obama kept W's Secretary of Defense (Gates) and picked almost exclusively people from the Clinton administration to be in his cabinet. Not to mention the fact that he invited an anti-choice, anti-gay preacher to be lead the inauguration convocation, which Clinton, Carter, and Ford would never have done, but W would have. It seems like he's different in that he's taking elements of all of them and trying to make an administration of it.

Although Clinton didn't have much of a problem signing DOMA into law, so maybe if he was friends with Warren...who knows?

[0+] Author Profile Page sapien replied to Flower :

I full-heartedly agree with your assessment of Obama. The only reason why did not include him is that he has yet to take office. I have to give him the benefit of the doubt that he will be better. Although, I'm just as optimistic about that as you seem to be.

There had to have been a lot of trashing of W that just went way over his head. The rest of these guys are just so much smarter than the Commander in Chimp... how did he end up as president again?

...oh right.

Sigh, sausagefest.

Clearly this was during their break from playing Halo.

That would be rather great if they were playing Halo. Obama is the only one to me that seems like the type to be a gamer. Though frat boys do like the game and W is the frat boy type.

I was dismayed that they are not organized chronologically.

ME TOO.

Jimmy Carter looks super awkward!

Obama and Carter are the only ones who read their email about instructions to dress according to "red state, blue state" game. :-)

W and HW are from Connecticut, and Bill is from Arkansas.

I thought of another one:

W (whispers): Please don't make me stand next to my dad. I think he's mad at me or somethin'.

The chuckle moment for me was when Clinton leaned over and said to GW Bush: "That's a real nice rug." He has nothing better to say? It seemed so out of left field.

[0+] Author Profile Page Crapburger replied to WIDave :

I wonder if he was making fun of that rug that Barbara made.

It looks like Obama made a hilarious comment right before the photo so that he'd be the only one not looking shocked/cracking up.

...you know, I do see him as the prankster type.

Internal monologues of presidents:

Bush I: Smile for the camera, no matter how much you're disappointed in your son.
Obama: Smile for the camera, only a couple more weeks and this'll all be yours...
Bush II: Hyuk, you should make your "thought he was the valet" joke again.
Clinton: Let's go over the wording for when we tell the joke to Hillary. "Barack got the kind of Bush sandwich most guys don't have in mind." Don't subtitute in "I", don't substitute in "I", don't substitute in "I"...
Carter: Smile for the camera...and stay away from Bill; you don't know where he's been.

I imagine yo mama jokes directed at W

No one is going to mention the fact that they are all men? Men, men, men, men......

I bet Carter looks awkward because he and Clinton have some beef from when Clinton was governor of Arkansas -- some way or another Carter promised Clinton he wasn't going to send some groups of Cuban refugees to Arkansas but then he did, and Clinton believes it cost him the election. (Although he of course later got re-elected.) This article has more on that and other beefs between the two.

And yeah, boo to them all being men. So much for the United States being so enlightened and shit...

my scenario: Bush-I accidentaly farted, Obama is holding his breath, Bush-II and Clinton think they caught Obama farting, and give him a meaningful look,... But apparently they had smelt Carter's fart (who had been trying to be sneaky and standing on the side). in the end, whoever denied it supplied it.

The space between Clinton and Carter is where the ghost of Gerald Ford was standing until he had to go take the picture. The ghost of Richard Nixon was supposed to take the photo, but he got sidetracked rifling through that desk for something or other.

The ghost of Richard Nixon was supposed to take the photo, but he got sidetracked rifling through that desk for something or other. Reagan's on Carter's left (our right), hence Carter's apprehensive look. And as usual, Bill has that look that suggests he just overheard a particularly good dirty joke.

Also, why wouldn't these men get along? For the most part, they're awfully genial -- not to mention there's little to distinguish their policies. The only bad blood I can think of might have come from Carter's post-presidential bashing of the Bushes.
