Hmm...too bad listening to a $3,000 MartinLogan subwoofer wouldn't convince my SO the way driving the Volvo allegedly would. :-(
I actually don't understand what the hell this ad is talking about.
Vintage women can't drive stick.
Makes me wonder about vintage men who liked to drive stick dot dot dot
Yeeeaaaahhhhh. Women are too stupid to drive cars. But you still need their permission to buy one, so you have to appeal to their vanity and be patient with their shortcomings. Did Volvo assume women didn't watch television?
Volvo assumed that women didn't buy cars. Frankly, given the age of the ad and most womens' purchasing power at the time, they were probably right. Still ridiculous obviously.
I think the point of asking if they assumed women don't watch TV is that if the ad is telling men how to manipulate their wives into giving permission to buy a car, its not going to be very effective if women know about it.
Nowadays, car companies appeal to women. And it's not much better.
...at least they don't make snide quips about our apparent inability to drive a manual.
Or an automatic: note the last shot. Ha ha, she put it into reverse by mistake.
The bafflement that's been expressed in this thread rather pleases me. It looks as though the "HA HA, WOMEN DRIVERS" meme is on its unmourned way out.
They see me rollin
They hatin
Patrolling they tryin to catch me ridin dirty.
Yeah, I don't know.
I love the vintage sexism post! It's good to be reminded every once and a while about what we're trying to evolve from. Totally ridiculous and PITIFUL.
Funny, and actually - Vintage-Look - romantic style for which clothes and accessories as though dug out on a flea market are characteristic.
