This headline certainly made me pause when it popped into my inbox so I had to share, even if it is for a laugh. According to this study of over 2000 adults, 46 percent of women said they would forgo sex for internet access as opposed to 30 percent of men.
The U.S. survey, which queried 2,119 adults last month, found that the gap grew even wider for both men and woman who were 18 to 34 years old. For woman, the percentage of those willing to skip the sheets in favor of the Web rose to 49 percent, while it climbed to 39 percent for men.And for women 35 to 44 years old, the figure jumped to 52 percent. (Results as of Monday from CNET's related online poll showed that 30.5 percent of respondents would give up sex for one year, while 26.1 percent would do without Internet access for a year. Almost 40 percent of voters didn't want to sacrifice either.)
For many of us the internet is how we work, so it is not really an option for us to "give up" the internet. Also, many women get sex from the internet as do many men, along with the increase in long distance relationships that also lead to sex via internet. So basically, if the options ain't looking good in your "real life" the internet functions as an excellent way to not only meet people but have sex with them.
And what was the sexual activity of the people questioned? Were they in relationships? Were they single? I think all these have to do with how long people are willing to give up sex. Hey, some women would rather have internet than have sex with the people they can possibly have sex with at any given time.
Thoughts?

What a strange study with surprising results. What about people who would give up internet access in exchange for sex? Socially awkward introvert that I am, I have definitely used the internet to find sex (or rather relationships/encounters that have led to sex) but in my more Luddite moments find myself wishing that all humans could pursue sex and things that lead to it without the advent of craigslist, okcupid, and other internet dating services.
here was another interesting tidbit from the article:
"Of course when it comes to TV, perhaps size matters, at least according to a different survey earlier this year of Britons conducted by electronics retailer Comet. Almost half of the men polled said they would give up sex for six months in return for a 50-inch plasma TV, according to Reuters.
That compared with just over a third of women who were willing to make the same sacrifice for the big-screen television"
Oh, and I'll be the first to admit the internet played a huge roll in my meeting my hubby. If you are the slightest bit off from the mainstream and shy (2 strikes against me), it's really hard to meet people who think like you and with whom you have mutual attraction. The internet made it much easier.
So hell ya, internet!
@spike the cat: "If you are the slightest bit off from the mainstream and shy (2 strikes against me)..."
Are you saying that only normative cultural practitioners are able to find romance/sex in the real world? That, I'm afraid, has not been my experience, just as it hasn't been my experience that people who date online are particularly abnormal.
(I've never online-dated, in case you wanted to know, but the people I know who do aren't necessarily shy or "off from the mainstream". It's merely a personal preference.)
Also I'd like to point out that the science of this article is a little bit foolish. They're asking people to rationalize within a realm that lends itself to irrational behavior (sex, that is). Would these people answer the same way in the heat of the moment, so to speak? Probably not.
I never used any language to imply that any dating practice or trait is normative or abnormal. So no, that's not what I'm saying.
For me off-mainstream means being someone who grew up cross-culturally and who was never quite accepted by either culture. And yes, that makes it harder to find people who don't have ingrained prejudices (which I don't have the time and energy for) about how someone who looks like me should behave; or someone who isn't shocked that I do or don't do A or B. It has nothing to do with my being normal or abnormal.
I think it's fairly obvious that people use the internet for a variety of reasons, e.g. time, convenience, cost, ease of use, ease of ability to find people with whom you share similar likes and dislikes, etc.
I was speaking more to the idea that a lot of people leave meeting people to chance, which is fine. But the less you have in common with your peers, and the less "social butterflyesque" you are, that's not necessarily the easiest route to take.
Wow, what a stupid poll. Give up sex for the Internet? Sorry, but that's not a question of what I prefer, without the Internet I couldn't have finished my online class, and I wouldn't be able to contact my teachers for my in person classes, nor would I be able to turn in assignments early or late or update them as needed. It'd be a lot harder to get in touch with family and friends, particularly long distance friends. On top of that, my major sources of entertainment are out: No downloading podcasts, no online video games, no watching TV shows I missed. Same goes for information services: no blogs, no online newspapers, no news podcasts.
In comparison with everything I need the Internet for, and everything it can provide for fun, an orgasm seems meaningless.
seriously!
because of how useful the internet is, it seems like an unfair comparison. it's like asking if i'd rather give up sex or driving my car.
the only way to gauge this would be to ask if in a moment of totally free time, would one rather have sex or go online.
Well, I certainly use the internet more than I have sex... so maybe it's true...
So... the question is do you prefer internet to sex? Or which would you give up?
In today's world, especially as a college student, I would have to say I would give sex up over the internet, but that doesn't mean I prefer the internet to sex. I mean, I'm using the internet as opposed to having sex right now, but...
I don't really understand this study, or how it's being reported. The Internet is not just an entertainment too, like a television, it's a communication medium. We use it, and we've come to rely upon it, for family, fun, and employment. Are these three things that we're just going to give up for sex? Would we give up our cell and landline phones for sex? Would we give up our car or public transportation for sex? No, that would be ridiculous.
To me, this is more of the sexist media trying to perpetuate the myth that woman don't (or aren't supposed to) like sex. This just makes me feel bad.
As well as perpetuating the myth that men are sex maniacs who will give up anything to have it.
This seems like some alarmist "the internet is going to kill humanity" crud. If us womenfolk are on the interwebs instead of having the sex to make the babies, the human race will die!
Seriously, who really thinks that any substancial part of the population is forgoing having sex to surf the internet? I also don't think there's anyone out there who is faced with a choice between sex or internet for a year.
I'm probably not going to have much of either in 2009, and I know I'll miss the internet more.
I do get the general idea of this, because even though we use the internet for everything nowadays (classes, paying bills, keeping in touch, etc.) it's still only fairly recently come into widespread use. Some of use grew up without it, and though we would be lost without it now, we could survive if we had to.
That being said...I can't say I prefer one over the other. BUT, I haven't had sex in a year and a half, and I went a month without internet during that time. Where's my cookie?
Eh, it's a stupid poll that gives us more meaningless statistics.
On a related note, I find that having Internet or television access in the bedroom decreases the amount of sex that happens there. Just a thought.
Yes but why not have your cake and it. Internet is great and sex is great. If you are single the internet is a great way to meet people espicailly if you don't want a full on relationship. I regularly use http://www.thesexlocator.com and I have no shame in doing so

I prefer internet over sex. There are many reasons for it. The only reason why i prefer internet over sex because, internet never harms you and you will not get affected by any disease. Sex can cause any kinda disease. You can work on internet for 24*7 but you can't have sex for 24*7.

In my opinion, it's more likely that the results found by the Intel/Harris Interactive survey are related to a lesser
commitment to sex in the short-term among women, and/or a reluctance to discuss a sexual deadline. Back in the day,
two months was about my limit before I started to engage in self-destructive behaviors.

There are many adults in this world who go without sex for much longer periods at a time than two weeks, and still manage to live. While sex might seem very important, especially to teenagers, it's not a fundamental need like oxygen, water, warmth, or internet access. DSL

That was my first thought. Couples tend to have less sex in general after they've been together a while and have kids. So comparing how much sex they're having now relative to earlier in their lives isn't a very useful metric.
You really need to look at how often couples in similar circumstance used to have sex before the internet existed. Otherwise you can't say if internet use is really decreasing sex or if it is instead displacing TV and other activities as the excuse for not having sex.

Human beings are social animals. It makes no more sense to say that people are "addicted to email" than to say they are "addicted" to the telephone, or to the U.S. mail. When you factor in the enormous quantity of information and entertainment that is so easily available on the internet, is it any wonder that most people consider their internet connection an integral part of their daily lives?
A recent survey claimed that the average American watches 4-6 hours of tv per day! Another study claims that 90% of those who own a tv actually own two or more tv sets. If you want clear evidence of addiction, look no further than the humble television screen.

Having been told that I couldn't survive a day without the computer one too many times, I decided to see how long I could go without before anyone noticed.
After two weeks I figured I should at least clean out the spam from my email accounts, and I pretty much just went back to normal.
Vindication came a week later when my mom said I should try going a week. When I chided her for not noticing my two weeks, she never got on my case ever again.

I never used any language to imply that any dating practice or trait is normative or abnormal. So no, that's not what I'm saying.
For me hd wallpapers off-mainstream means being someone who grew up cross-culturally and who was never quite accepted by either culture.
