Quick Hit: Young Women Comment on the New Administration

What terminology would you replace "the first lady" with if you had the chance? (I said partner to the president.)

I love Partner to the President/Presidential Partner. I actually can't think of anything better. Because if we were to every elect (I hope I hope) a president with an "alternative family" (i.e. with a non-married, permanent partner of any gender), the term wouldn't have to change.
Does anyone else find it hilariously depressing that the country is so unprepared for a non-straight and/or non-male president that we didn't even bother to think of an alternative for First Lady?

I thought the alternative was already First Gentleman (I saw that term in a couple of articles about potential First Spouses when Elizabeth Dole was in the Republican primaries).

It is interesting to contemplate that today's America is equally unprepared for an unmarried President. In the past, a sister served the role of "First Lady."
What is the role of "First Lady?" Traditionally, it has been household management -- planning of non-state Presidential social events (like the annual luncheon for influential Irish-Americans around St. Patrick's Day, the planning of state entertainment functions (Dance Theater of Harlem regularly entertains presidents of both parties), the annual Easter Egg hunt, and most First Ladies purchase new Presidential dish ware and redecorate one of the rooms.
Whether or not these things are important is a long discussion.
But, I predict that alternative names for the "First Lady" will arise when the need arises. When the first gay, lesbian, or straight female President is elected, the term will be a no-brainer (and it won't be "First Dude").
