New report: Unionized women workers earn more
A new report from the Center for Economic and Policy Research says that the raise in wages and benefits women receive from joining a union raises is on par with having a college education.
"For women, joining a union makes as much sense as going to college," said John Schmitt, a Senior Economist at CEPR and the author of the study. "All else equal, joining a union raises a woman's wage as much as a full-year of college, and a union raises the chances a woman has health insurance by more than earning a four-year college degree."
The report, Unions and Upward Mobility for Women Workers, also found that unionized women workers earned 11.2 percent more than their non-union peers and that women in unions were more likely to have health insurance and a pension plan.

Yes. This should be obvious to everyone. Thank you for driving it home all the same.
In other news, plastic is bad for the environment, America has its first black president, and Feminists have better sex. :-D
Of course union workers have better wages, but it is only at the expense of other workers, and, in the long, their future selves.
Do Unions Really Raise Wages?
As a Union Member all I can say is, Fuck yeah!
:P
Here's another blog post on this report and the importance of unions for women: http://laborrightsblog.typepad.com/international_labor_right/2008/12/in-good-times-and-bad-unions-offer-women-hope-and-equality.html
And of course -- let's take action to pass the Employee Free Choice Act to expand organized labor in the US!: http://www.freechoiceact.org

Why should anyone want to expand organized labor? In every other field, people usually find competition and the resulting minimization of price to be a good thing, and labor, especially unskilled labor, is as close to perfect competition as any real world situation is likely to get. But here we are apparently supposed to believe the opposite of what we believe everywhere else, that legally backed cartels and higher prices are a good thing for the American consumer, for no other reason than that the price of the product in question is referred to as a "wage."
Apparently the fact that people tend to sell their labor directly but only buy labor though the intermediary of employers makes them forget that they buy as much labor as they sell in the long run, which makes them think that raising costs of production would somehow help them.
I'm confused, are Alice and Laborrights Bots or peoples?
I'm inclined to agree with labor, but the triple post has me on the fence.
Triple post? I didn't multipost at all, and laborrights only double posted, which happens a lot with new posters.
In any case, I'm not a bot. All my mini-rants are typed out on the spot.
Sorry -- I am an actual person! I had an internet glitch which caused me to post the comment twice accidentally. I would just re-interate that labor is NOT a commodity. If all you believe in is the wonder of the free market (please see the financial crisis) then obviously you may not love unions. On the other hand, if you are a worker and want to make more money -- as the report shows, join a union.
Ok, I'm with you Labor rights, we all have to live on this spinning ball of mud and it does not work if only a few people get the good bits. The best way I've seen is to give the workers a voice so they can get their share of the profits.
thanks for not being a bot.
