Holy shit.

The American Family Association has a new DVD out, "They're Coming to Your Town," so you can learn the "strategies used by gay activists" and avoid gay infiltration in YOUR town!

Yes, really.

I love how they show video shots of activists from afar like it's fucking National Geographic. Don't get too close, they're contagious!! This kind of stuff is proof of just how batshit crazy these people are. I really don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Full transcript after the jump.

It could happen to your town.

Man: They've come out of the closet.

AFA presents a look at how a handful of homosexual activists infiltrated the Eureka Springs, Arkansas government and changed the very moral fiber of the city.

Man 2: They're taking over a place that has been known for its Christianity.

Man 1: They branded us as fundamentalists, as Christian hate bigots -

Man 2: Once homosexual activists get into power, they're not too tolerant toward other people.

Learn the strategies used by gay activists and don't let this happen to your city. This DVD is a must-teaching tool - watch, and learn how to fight a well-organized gay agenda to take over the cities of America, one city at a time.

Man 3: If it hasn't happened in your town, get ready, because it is going to happen.

Show it at home, in Sunday schools, Bible studies and community groups. Purchase your copy, or a 5 pack to share with others today, and spread the news - They're Coming To Your Town.

"they" "they" "they" I'm sure you all caught that.

Everything else running through my mind is surely what's running through most of your...err.... "their" mind.

Cliffs Notes for Invasion of the Body Snatchers? Fuck that shit, the original's more entertaining.

Kat, that is such a beautifully simple response, I'm kind of teary.

Beautiful sentiment. People act like homosexuals are lepers or something. It just reminds me of Ahmedinejad "We don't have homosexuals in Iran."

[0+] Author Profile Page snowydayinla replied to jstein :

What's wrong with lepers? They are humans suffering from a disease called Leprosy, caused by a bacteria, which is treatable by a cocktail of antibiotics. They're human, just like homosexuals.

I love how they knock gay activists for calling them fundamentalists, then market this DVD as suitable for Bible studies, church, and Sunday school. I could be wrong, but I'm willing to bet money that *most* churches who would hold a Bible-study viewing of this film are fundamentalist in nature.

And OMG, They've COME OUT OF THE CLOSET! BOOGA BOOGA BOOGA! We need to shove them back in there with the galoshes and moth balls!

Where can I get my copy of the gay agenda? Does it come free with this movie? None of my gay/lesbian/bi friends and family members have a copy for me to read. My uncles have been together for 35 years and still don't know where they can find this document.

[0+] Author Profile Page Liza replied to Kathleen6674 :

I'll ask my old roommate and his boyfriend if either of them have a copy.

[0+] Author Profile Page metabonbon replied to Kathleen6674 :

Well, to be totally snarky, fundamentalists believe in a strict adherence to a specific set of rules (look at me, quotin' Wikipedia). Since Jesus doesn't really say anything about homosexuality, maybe they take issue with being tarred as "fundamentalists" who, by definition, aren't nearly bigoted enough for these guys' taste.

[0+] Author Profile Page Feather replied to Kathleen6674 :

"They've come out of the closet..."
What do they think that means? That gay people are literally monsters that lurk in the closet or something? And under the bed, too, I suppose? Maybe they're like werewolves or zombies and whoever they attack turns gay! And now they're OUT of the closet it'll be like 28 Days Later!

[0+] Author Profile Page Seamster replied to Kathleen6674 :

I asked a conservative friend for clarification on what the gay agenda was, since he referenced it.

It turns out that it's "to make homosexuality seem like an equally valid alternative to heterosexuality."

To which I responded, "well, yeah. What, isn't it?"

[0+] Author Profile Page Liza said:

And now, we'll study the homosexual in it's natural habitat...

The ignorant, silly people that made this DVD so badly need to have enemies in order to feel important!

Maybe they chose who to declare an enemy with a dart board? Or maybe GLBTQ are easier to go after for "destroying society" because gangsters and mobsters have guns & will use them.

Yes! Agreed -- I was really struck by how sort of Manichean all this is.

Not only do they stress "they," but note the "*your* town." It's "your" world; they are intruders.

"When you are trying to crush people's rights, are you being told that you are in the wrong? THAT'S VICTIMIZATION! Learn how to make sure that you are the bigot with the upper hand with God's FUCK THEM FAGS (tm) traditional dvd. Buy five televisions and make a circle with them. Sit in the middle and rotate on my middle finger while you watch all five dvds synchronously in your lonely little hate world."

Listen to me branding these people. I'm so intolerant.

Ahh. Othering. It's not just for racist bigots anymore.

[0+] Author Profile Page elbu replied to Ariel :

Erm.
a) 'Othering' is something most people do, often subconsciously. While 'racist bigots' obviously do, too, it's not always helpful to say that it's only 'racist bigots' doing the Othering... for example if you want people to become aware of what they're saying/doing without alienating them by calling them 'racist bigots' (maybe I'm missing the irony, but labeling people 'racist bigots' is also Othering).
b) I think homophobic bigots have done their fair share of othering for quite some time.
c) How to tell whether these White homophobic people aren't also racist?

Back to topic: Why are conspiracy theories so appealing? Because they make ordinary lives more exciting?

facetious- (adjective)1.) characterized by flippant or inappropriate humor 2.) (of a person) intending to be amusing, esp. inappropriately. Oxford American Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus (c)2002

I know how versatile othering is. It was a joke.

I can't help thinking the lives of these people must be pretty sad for them to be so afraid, and pretty boring for them to resort to inventing strange new conspiracy theories to spice it all up a little (we're threatened! I do hope that it all backfires and no-one takes the dvd seriously.

I'm an Arkansan, so when I saw this article was about Eureka Springs I burst out laughing. 'But Eureka Springs is like the Ozarks' San Francisco!' I thought to myself, 'Artsy, nature-loving, friendly, colorful, full of historical buildings, a thriving and funky downtown, and a beautiful wedding mecca.' Then I read further to find that the AFA had made the same comparison, except that they did not regard it as a good thing.

Having visited Eureka Springs a few times over the years, being gay-friendly has been a boom for the area. It's growing liberal outlook has definitely helped pull it out of the downward economic slide much of Arkansas has seen these past few years, and the money and attention has resulted not only in new growth but in restoration of previously abandoned parts of the city's history.

If the AFA wants to return to a time when the area only saw an influx of real money was during the Passion Play, I'm pretty sure they'll have to fight off the townspeople who have prospered thanks to the city's changed moral fiber.

"The gays are coming, and they'll bring their godless 'economic prosperity' with them! You don't want that, do you? What do you mean, 'yes we do'?"

Uh, I don't remember anyone getting this riled up about crystal meth. .)_.) Out of context, you could apply this sentence to meth, which has infiltrated and hurt communities. So dangerous street drugs are no big deal but gays unleash panic? Priorities people, priorities...

This is from a blog post I wrote some time ago in response to this message from the Pope:

"I wanted to shed light on the direct relationship that exists between the family and peace in the world," the Pope said, in his first public address of 2008.

"The family is the primary agent of peace and the negation or even the restriction of rights of the family ... threatens the very foundations of peace."

It seemed prudent to copy my response here.
-----------------

The suggestion that any other type of family threatens the very peace of our planet is interesting, but I suppose I've always wanted to make some kind of mark on the world, and if that mark is made by being the daughter of a man who raised my sister and me as a single parent (not the "traditional" family), I'll take it!

From The Guardian:

Norway rated world's most peaceful country

The Economist Intelligence Unit compiled the index on behalf of the Australian IT entrepreneur and philanthropist, Steve Killelea ... It has the support of the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the former US president Jimmy Carter. The survey found that "small, stable countries which are part of regional blocs, such as the European Union, are most likely to get a higher ranking". Scandinavian countries are the most peaceful in the world. The main determinants of internal peace were income, extent of schooling and the level of regional integration."

No mention of the traditional family. In fact...

"Denmark has been recognizing same-sex marriage (as registered partnerships, not marriage but civil unions that offer rights and benefits similar to those offered to married couples) since 1989, without nuclear incidents. The same can be said for Norway (since 1993) and Sweden (since 1995)." http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:XqaleSJvnSEJ:islandia.law.yale.edu/GayMarriageBook/+gay+marriage+in+norway&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=us

"The USA has the third highest divorce rate among legal (heterosexual and traditional) marriages, and only recognizes same-sex marriage in a small handful of states."

The above examples do little more, I realize, than point out that the traditional or nontraditional-ness of a family structure seems to have little impact on the peacefulness of a nation.

As an argument to the argument that same-sex families (or even nontraditional families) threaten the world, it would be too obvious to point out that the absence of the dominance of gay families has been prevalent for centuries, and we have yet to achieve this thing called "peace," so instead I'll just link to a same-sex family and post a general challenge to anyone to find something remotely threatening about them.

(link no longer active, but the family I refer to, the Lazarus family, can be found here, too: http://damnstraight.oversampled.net/2007/02/02/marriage-equality-debated-in-connecticut-again/)

[0+] Author Profile Page Aerin replied to kjt :

Sort of on topic and sort of tangent - I hate when Christian leaders do this "family" shit. I'm a Christian theologian, and I can tell you - the nuclear family was not highly prized by the early church, who said you should give up everything to follow Christ.

Now, I'm not advocating proselytizing, either, but it's an example of how even the Catholics interpret Scripture to mean what they want, and there's far less proof of Jesus being against gays than there is of Jesus being against nuclear families.

I'm so ashamed of my religion sometimes....*sigh*

I highly recommend Them coming to your town, by the way. Before They came to Eureka it was a dying small town. Now it's full of art galleries, creative spaces, and diverse and interesting people.

Did anyone else notice the background music? Like we're in a dance club? My first thought was that they stole the beat from the Queer as Folk soundtrack. I think Christian hymns might have been more effective. Their choice of music makes me want to party in the streets with my big pink hat on.
