Sigh. Most depressing part? It will probably be effective advertising.

If an ad doesn't resonate with you, you're not the target market. I'm sure this is a great ad for "15-year-old hetero white male" demographic.

[0+] Author Profile Page Lydia Encyclopedia said:

How trashy. I can't believe this is effective.

[0+] Author Profile Page jess1114 said:

Ugh. I always thought that one of the most interesting links is that Axe is owned by Unilever, which owns Dove, which promotes the "Real Beauty Campaign". Argh.

Dove, which promotes the "Real Beauty Campaign".

No company that tries to sell you ass cream has your best interests at heart, no matter what they call their ad campaign.

[0+] Author Profile Page M. replied to FrumiousB :

And don't forget that Unilever sells some cosmetics in Asia designed to make skin lighter. And the ads are clearly racist. Just try in youtube "fair & lovely".

That made my penis shutter. Probably not what they were going for. [Full disclosure: I'm a Ban man.]

Shudder. Not shutter. Shudder. Sorry.

[0+] Author Profile Page aleks replied to closethipster :

Dude you need to see a doctor about that.

-4? That's... that's worse than some of the trolls get. I know I'm not the best commenter in the world, but I just want to be clear that I'm agreeing wholeheartedly with the spirit of Jessica's post.

Is this a real commercial? Has anyone seen it on TV? It looks so cheap and poorly made, like one of those "sponsored by" spots at the end of The Price is Right.

[0+] Author Profile Page janeair replied to Cedar :

I have seen it... unfortunately. I think they are just using it for online advertising. It keeps coming up when I try to watch the Daily Show or Colbert on my computer, and makes me a little more grossed out each time I see it.

Maybe a little beside the point, but what's with the music? Is it the 1980s again? Or are they retro sexing the Caribbean?

Lame.

[0+] Author Profile Page yamiblue990 said:

this just makes me shudder from how overt the ad is. i hate to think of the kind of guy that would buy into what this ad is selling. now if you excuse me i must go vomit from how sick the ad has made me.

[0+] Author Profile Page aleks replied to yamiblue990 :

The technical term for those guys is "douchbags".

Not only is it disgustingly sexist, it's just bad. Bad, bad, bad, BAD! This is the silliest ad I've seen in...days!

If I could post a photo of my expression right now, I would. Its kind of like my eyebrows have jumped together, trying to keep my brain from falling out.

If there was ever a reason not to shave, this may be it.

Wow...if I didn't know any better, I'd have thought these were spoof ads. Honestly, I don't know who would 'fess up to owning this junk (Edge or Axe)--the ads are TACKY and the products smell awful.

LAME.

thanks for bringing this up. i have to sit through it every time i watch the daily show and it makes me CRAZY. i really wish jon stewart would occasionally just be like "man, can you BELIEVE that ad that was just on??"

also i'm pretty sure that's not gwyneth paltrow

[0+] Author Profile Page Lilith Luffles said:

This would make for a hilarious spoof ad, unfortunately, way too many guys will buy into it. Namely, my male college peers. Possibly people I think are o.k. Blech.

I don't think that this stuff sells because guys think they will get hot chicks. I think it sells because they think that they're responding to it makes them more manly. Kind of like the guys that point out every mildly attractive girl they see as being hot. Just a way to say "don't worry guys, myself included, I respond to half-naked chicks, I'm still manly and not gay."

When they're actually advertising a product, it's pretty hard to just say they're satirizing sexism in advertising. They're laughing all the way to the bank, and I'm not planning on buying this product.

I get the joke, but I think it is only barely funny. I find the Axe ads to be a lot more good-spirited and clever, but this is just rank objectification of women.

I thought it was a joke when I first saw it.

My husband has been a longtime Edge user, but stopped after seeing this commercial.

I actually wrote a paper for my Men and Masculinities class on the "Axe Effect" (google it, look at the website... its disgusting).

What is the other men's deodorant/body wash stuff that is very similar to Axe? I can't think of the name, but it's basically the same exact thing.

[0+] Author Profile Page Lauren T said:

I actually wrote a paper for Men and Masculinities on "The Axe Effect" (google it, check out the website, it's disgusting)... Tag is another one that's bad too.

And not only is this ad extremely gross and sexist, it is a terrible ad quality wise. Ugggg.

[0+] Author Profile Page Lauren T said:

Didn't mean to post twice... I realized it was called Tag after I wrote the first one

It takes more than a gaggle of tarts for the d-man to buy some shaving lotion.

I can't help but laugh at that crap they call a commercial. I must admit that the girls are extremely attractive but look horrible with that terrible acting and horryfying green bathing suits. Overall the commercial is stupid and it's hard to believe any man would buy a product just because they put half naked women in their commercials.

And I can't even express the laughter I get everytime I see an AXE or TAG commercial. Not only do those products smell horrible and unlike their commercials, I run away from the smell, but I find it hard to believe anyone would believe in those products.

[0+] Author Profile Page rhowan replied to OneOfAKind :

I had a socially awkward classmate who walked around with a spray can of Axe prominently displayed in the mesh outside pocket of his backpack where people usually carry water bottles. Some people really do buy into the hype.

Wow that's extremely sad. I think sexy women in an ad commercial is the most sexist and corniest way to sell a product. It's like those Bod commercials where the women are just obsessing over the really buff guys and those are just as sexist as the ones with sexy women. But yeah I'm in high school now and back in middle school guys would spray that crap all over their bodies and then wonder why girls would plug their noses when they walked past them.

I hate Axe, Tag and all types of colognes you can find at 7/11.

The only good commercial I've ever seen for those silly sprays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1-LaQ9kxv4

[0+] Author Profile Page JohnJ said:

What's the big deal? This commercial is an expression of free speech, which is every American's God-given inalienable right. The women have made a free choice to appear in this ad. They are also expressing their own empowerment by portraying themselves as young and beautiful women. And actors in commercials can make quite a good deal of money, not to mention that they often go on to more lucrative forms of entertainment.

Funny how so many people seem to disapprove of this ad, how they immediately see only negative aspects. Yey, quite recently on this same blog, people were literally falling over themselves to defend violent pornography (the Max Hardcore post) using the very same logic I have facetiously used to defend this blatantly misogynistic piece of garbage.

There's not much difference between this ad and pornography. Both exist as a man-made attempt at perpetuating the image of women as existing solely for male sexual use. Both are part of an orchestrated social environment in which women's lives are given less value than men's. To defend one and attack the other doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

[0+] Author Profile Page Eileen replied to JohnJ :

I love when the faketrolls come to drop knowledge. The first paragraph has to be poor satire, right?

[0+] Author Profile Page veej replied to JohnJ :

I think you can defend porn use and not like this commercial. Most porn makes me sick and concerned instead of turned on, but porn doesn't sponsor a television program or get plastered up on a billboard providing background for my daily life. You still have to seek out porn. Advertising is targeted but is still public and depends on public acceptance to sell products and services.

Porn can provide healthy outlets for men and women. I don't think you can condemn it entirely. It's use and production can and mostly does compromise gender equality and real understanding. Many men and women however can separate fantasy from reality.

You can still be a feminist and believe all porn and sexist advertising is an outrage. I can still be a feminist and believe that porn is good if used/produced responsibly and that sexist advertising is an outrage. But I think mocking peoples opinions doesn't help the feminist dialogue.

Fake trolls? Go back and read the Max Hardcore posts and find out just how many fake feminists are on this site.

[0+] Author Profile Page Eileen replied to JohnJ :

The post you are referencing does not seem to exist. Link?

[0+] Author Profile Page Eileen replied to Eileen :

Oh, I just found it in the Feministing Community area. Now can you demonstrate that the people in that thread are exactly the people in this thread? And if not, can you explain why you choose to treat all women as a monolith rather than as individuals with individual opinions?

I agree that a person who defends Max Hardcore porn is going to have trouble defending an argument against this commercial. But I wouldn't take that (at this moment) apocryphal person as the symbol or representative of all feminist opinion on this board. That's reductive and insulting.

That's a real advert? It looks like a poorly done spoof.

[0+] Author Profile Page Audrey said:

The same ideology that produces porn produces these types of commercials- the difference to me though is what's being sold-an unattainable beauty standard and other ideals. There is still a difference in level though because what is sold here is a products using these ideals, where as porn is closer to selling women for the male gaze for more direct consumption.

I saw this commercial as I was watching TV on hulu.com. I had to close the window and stop watching it because it made me feel sick.
Anyone catch the little bit where they basically implied that foreign women dumb? The blonde woman on the right has a slight accent and says the made-up words in both ads.

Anyone know what ad agency made this? I'm also going to write hulu.com and ask that they stop showing it... it's offensive and has made me stop watching on more than one occasion.
The first time I saw it, I thought it was a joke! Then I went to their website.. *cries*

I once had a lap dance from a (male) stripper and he was SLATHERED in Axe. I was covered in a rash for three days. Now, if I even smell the stuff I break out in hives. Yeesh.

I am, in equal amounts, distressed by the use of these women's bodies to sell products as much as by the fake, made-up, baby words these actresses are using. But then again, you can take the English teacher out of the school, but you can't take the school out of the English teacher. Or whatever.

[0+] Author Profile Page agreenballoon said:

So, it's shaving cream, right?
I feel like, even if sex(ism) sells, the advertisers should have at least tried to get the intended use of the product across. I feel like the same demographic of dudes who'd fall for this ad might try and use it as a lubricant.

[0+] Author Profile Page lemur said:

I have a sinus headache from just looking at the commercial still. Now to avoid the idiot that would use that junk.

In general, I think the cheap fragrances for men are really just offensive to my nose and everyone else's. My boyfriend and I will sniff them in the store and be amazed that people buy it and wear it. Proof that the advertising works...

I think womens' cheap fragrances aren't bad, so why are mens?

I love this commerical for a men's product

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjAJB8gULZo

Does anyone remember the Bod commercials? Those were weird - targeted toward men but used images of half naked, ripped men with women voice overs, or women as gazers in the bleachers... interesting....

Sex will always sell.

[0+] Author Profile Page Halo replied to doubleb :

...only because it's programmed into society. The idea that is sex(y) is a social construct.

Almost everything is a social construct, like our language, concept of love and morality. Pointing that fact out doesn't invalidate it.
