This was mildly funny until the very last sentence which had me in a fit of Haskins-lovin' joy and laughter.
"It all comes down to people like her...and she thinks the world is flat! God Bless America!"
I am lost for words to express how spot on that delivery was.
I love Whoopi Goldberg. Hasselbeck pisses me off a lot of the time, made less fun by the fact that she's not well informed.
Still, it has its funny moments.
This video is hysterical.
Love it! I absolutely can't stand the View, so I was super excited about the Sarah Haskins Treatment of this horrible show. We get one show where a bunch of women talk about issues, one of whom is an actual newsperson, three are comedians, and one is from a reality show. This is supposed to represent women and be our Important Source for Important topics? Way to reinforce stereotypes. At least I have respect for Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg is funny without being annoying and seems to have well thought-out opinions. Who can hear it, though, when no one gets a chance to speak uninterrupted? I absolutely can't stand when a whole show is people yelling over each other. I suppose it's less disgraceful on a talk-show than it is on some of the real news stations, but why does this exist at all?
Also, I totally forgot about Sheri Shepherd until I watched this clip. The world is flat WTF. The sad part is I really like her on 30 Rock, and then she goes on with her space cadet opinions (we really should bring that back as an insult, courtesy of my mother and her anachronistic expressions) on the View and makes me annoyed again. argh.
I've never seen The View, but we have an equivalent show over here in the UK: "Loose Women" (that title: Ugh!), and pretty much all of Haskins' criticisms apply to that, too. So, so funny.
I looovvve it! so glad I never saw the view!
It's sad that people actually get their news from this show which only has one voice that has ever worked in journalism...
BUT...I think it's OK to call the View for what it is and not discredit it, as long as people aren't actually referring to it as their personal Bible.
I kind of enjoy the View...it certainly isn't my primary source for news (I usually tune in to CBC Newsworld for that), but, if you take it for what it is it can be entertaining and sometimes quite funny.
hahahaha.
Sometimes I like the View sometimes not. I can't stand Hasselback - not simply because she's so right wing, but because she's right wing and and uninformed and unwilling to even LISTEN to the others when they have an opposing viewpoint.
And I agree that the last line pretty much sealed this one for me. I almost sprayed a chewed-up olive onto my computer screen. mmmmm
I'm so in love with Sarah Haskins. I wait for new Traget: Women videos and every time I find one it's like finding a brand new present just for me!
There's a much better new Target: Women on Disney Princesses:

Feministing posted that one too:

I think they've posted all of Target: Women series...I think.
As long as Goldberg is on there, I'm a happy woman. :)
The view is probably one of the most horrible talk shows on television. They do nothing but bicker all the time. But I agree with Velderia. Whoopi Goldberg is probably the only reason I occasionally watch ten minutes of it.

The View can be frustrating but I mostly attribute that to Hasselback, who is immune to reason and has no sense of humor about herself or her beliefs. At least Sherri Sheppard has a sense of humor...
It is definitely not the worst of the daytime talk shows, mostly because ALL of the others revert to the Charismatic or Important Man and his Pretty Sidekick formula... as on Regis and Whomever, Steve Edwards and his Two Pretty Sidekicks (in LA), and those two only slightly closeted conservatives on Fox. I get sick of seeing the pretty woman in support to the big man and I'm grateful to see women in passionate conversation with each other, even if it is often non-productive and only touches the surfaces of issues. It's a talk show after all... how in depth are they really able to get?
I've always attributed the undue vitriol aimed at this show to lingering misogyny. Annoyed by women in conversation? Think their bickering is grating? Think they all talk too much? Yeah, I've heard that before.
That said... Sarah Haskins is so funny. I love how she's making all of this visible... the way that we are pandered to and marketed to. Because as much as I find this show tolerable, it still exists as a delivery device for all of those damned housecleaning and yogurt commercials.
I miss the days when Lisa Ling was a co-host...
I just wish it was possible to have a show in this kind of format where the women talked in turn and actually listened to one another - the fact that they do all talk over one another definitely undermines anything of consequence that they say, in my opinion. I'd really like to see an all-female lineup which doesn't reduce the women to screaming fishwives and instead shows that women are more than capable of carrying on mature and reasoned discussions.
Although it can be annoying when people on shows like this talk over one another, that seems pretty typical of a show with a panel/group format, whether it be men or women, or a mix. Reminds me of the Cosby Show episode where Claire was a guest on a male-dominated political show and they all talked over each other & bickered the entire time, and she was absolutely disgusted.
Also, I tend to see this bickering "problem" on "The View" as a side effect of a good trait, which is that there is no real hierarchy on the show. There is no Matthews or Olbermann at the head of the discussion, ready to cut off Rachel Maddow, or whoever, as soon as they've had enough of what she has to say. Whoopi does act as moderator, and cuts them to commercial, but IMHO, the bickering of "The View" ladies is indicative of the awesome notion that they all have an EQUAL say and they don't have to give in to anyone. Even when Barbara is there, it feels that way. And like any show that discusses politics, sometimes they are smart and on the mark, and sometimes they are not. That's just to be expected, IMO.
i admit that i do watch the View when i get the chance, but only the first half hours or so. They do discuss subjects that not a lot of other shows cover.
Hasselback is so damn closed minded, after Obama was elected she said that she would stand behind his decisions because he was president and i think she should have had the moxy to keep loving McCain. The world doesn't change if we just hop on board with the people in power.
i love Whoopi, but i do miss the old days when i was (supposed to be) in grade 8, i would get up at 11 to watch the View, then switch to CBC and watch Rick Mercer (best year of homeschooling EVER).
I'm with Eileen on this one. I love love love Sarah Haskins' deconstruction of lots of women-focused media and advertising (and certainly The View deserves some), but her criticism of a women's show in which women TALK is only funny until you think about why "women talking" ought to be a punchline.
I'm surprised that so many commenters thought the interruptive conversation format on The View was a problem. I'm googling furiously - didn't bell hooks essay on the inherent classism in university education, which denies interruption as valid discourse? I'll comment again if I can find some copypasta for you.
Not that hooks-ian theory is above question.
