Obama wins!

Obama wins! OMFG! I don't know that I ever thought I'd write these words, but here it is: The US has elected its first African-American President. And I'm an emotional mess. Like many of you, I'm celebrating with family. I'm sure I'll have more to say tomorrow, but for now, I'm going to go do a happy dance and cry some more with my nearest and dearest.

In the meantime, let us have it in comments!

You might be in tears but I am drunk as shit from celebrating. Fuckin' yes mofos!!! This may not be readable but I'll say once again that I am drunk as fuck. A friend had to drive my ass home. YEEEESSSSSSSS!!! I finally get to be happy about American politics! I am in ecstasy right now. Oh the hard work. Is it tacky to get fucked up at a Planned Parenthood volunteer event? Whatevs, it doesn't change nuthin' now.

And I'm jealous of those who are celebrating with their families...I'm the lone Dem in a whole lotta Republicans. I'll never hear the end of their bitching...but it's worth it!

My family hates me for voting Obama, but it doesn't matter. There's never a reason to apologize for ones beliefs.

Oh dude, I know how you feel. My parents and my brother are like divided. I drank my sparkling apple cider alone. I wish my bro was here with me, even though he's a pain in the neck sometimes. :')

So I ran upstairs, giggling madly because I'm so happy, to tell my grandmother the news. Now she's a staunch conservative (darn old people) and I just wanted to rub it in.
Me: Obama won! Obama won!
Her: You're laughing. I'm not laughing.
Me: (still giggling) I'm going back downstairs now...

A little too tired to get truly emotional (it's currently about 4am over here), but I know I probably will in the morning. This is great news, guys. Well done.

I too am proud to be from Ohio!! It was amazing after his speech last night, I came downstairs and my mother was crying! she wasn't sure that morning who she was going to vote for, but she did vote for Obama, and she was just so moved by his speech.

Wow, those people need to be reminded of Pierre Trudeau's elephant simile.

I'm a born Canadian with expatriate American parents, registered as a dual citizen. I found out this year that some states will allow you to vote if a parent there is registered to vote, so I signed up and threw an extra vote Obama's way.

YES. WE. DID.

I pray winning candidates can now make good on their promises with a minimum of excuses regarding the baggage the previous administrations have left them with, or the limited number of years ahead of them. I've expected honesty and results from Republicans since I came of age in the 1980s, and I won't change just just because I support Democrats.

Yay! thank god! What a landslide victory! How awesome! I'm so happy and relieved! Even though I voted for Cynthia Mckinney...I'm so glad that Obama won. I'm really proud that I had the opportunity to vote for a progressive African American woman on a major third party ticket this election...but I'm even more proud of our country that we have made history tonight in choosing Obama as our 44th president. Thank you America! I'm proud of all the choices that we as American's have been given during this historical election...And deep down I had faith that American's would do the right thing. The world must be so happy for us right now!

I also would like to say, that, with all the negative campaigning that McCain did in the last couple of days, to his credit, I watched his speech and I think he was very gracious and I'm glad that he could finish on a positive note and congratulate Obama the way he did (except of course some of the people in the crowd were very rude and just disgusting).

I feel like the mood in the country has already changed dramatically...I can feel optimism and hope. I hear car horns honking in the street and I can feel the turning of a new page in the history of our country.

Still, I was thinking Obama is going to have a lot to do once he is in office. It's going to be tough fixing the disastrous policy of the last 8 years. And although there's been great progress tonight, we still have a long ways to go and a lot of work to do before we reach true equality for all Americans. But I think Obama is who America and the world needs right now, and I have a renewed faith that Americans will come together in support of a brighter future. Sorry I'm being so cheesy, but I've definitely shed some tears tonight, as most of us probably have.

Another victory tonight was the rejection of the Colorodo "person hood" bill and South Dakota's abortion ban bill. Yay Colorado & Yay South Dakota for standing up for women's rights!

Unfortunately, in Florida the marriage bill passed. And I can't even begin on how upset/disappointing it is to know that people are still willing to pass a law that discriminates against a whole groups of people.

Does anyone know how the other anti-gay/anti-equality/anti-civil rights/anti-immigrant ballot measures did in other states?

Anyway...overall it was a great night, results are still coming in...so I'm going to go watch and cry some more.

Hurray for us! I can't wait until January 20!

I haven't been proud of this country in so long, but tonight I remember that it is possible...and it feels really good. Thank you so much, Barack, Michelle, Joe, and everyone else who donated whatever they could give to make this possible.

I turned down a beer 'cause I was so naturally high!

Alright, everyone, we've now got to put our voted where our feet are, and get to work! There's so much going on in this world right now, and we can't afford to go to sleep like we did during much of the 1990s.

Azeem, a local hip-hop artist in my town of Oakland, CA told the audience at our house's Halloween party recently that he voted for GWB in the last election because he knew it was one of the only ways we'd all come together, wake up, and get active in politics and the world around us. Now, I don't know if he actually voted for GWB, but the sentiment he expressed wasn't lost on the audience.

We cannot become complacent again, no matter how much money we make, no matter how good things become. We must remain vigilant. Every one of us on this site needs to come up with at least one thing -- and for many of us, one more thing -- we can do to make the world a better place. Barack Obama's election is only the beginning. It's up to all of us to become the change we want to see, and to help others as well.

I heard that the City of Detroit voted 97% for Obama! Damn... this is awesome!!!!!!!!!!

I say.... YES WE CAN!!!!

[0+] Author Profile Page TheNotoriousB.R.E said:

WOW! I can honestly say that I have a sense of hope. I feel like we are all coming together as one, despite our differences at one of the hardest times for our country in the past century. We united, and I think Im actually feeling proud to be an American right now.

There's, uh, something in my eye.

But now, let's not blindly reach out a hand in the spirit of bipartisanship. Let's remember the past eight years and affirmatively give up the powers that the Republicans have used:
Let's disable signing statements
Let's disable the "nuclear option"
Let's reenact transparency and the FOIA
Let's investigate partisan hiring and firing

I second the motion.

I cried during his acceptance speech. For once in my life I'm actually proud to be an American.

Me too! I used to never be proud of this...

This whole night seems surreal. I can't believe how far our country has come. I can't believe how momentous this night has been for everyone. My faith in humanity has been restored that much more that we can all come together and make the RIGHT choice for our country.

I look forward to the next EIGHT years, and our futures as women and feminists. I'm looking forward to the gender gap closing up and true equality in this nation becoming a true possibility. "The future is NOW!"

Let's keep 'em honest women! We have someone in the highest position of our nation's office that is ON OUR SIDE! Let's make sure he remembers us when he's there. Our work is only beginning.

I'm a California voter and just came back from a No on Prop 4 party at the Biltmore in Los Angeles. We watched President Obama's speech in absolute silence. Tears and joy.

Our work is far from done, though. Keep your fingers crossed that we'll defeat Prop 4 AND Prop 8 here in California. But for now: YES WE CAN!

I have never felt better, and I was watching it and experiencing it all in Japan.
I am at work, a teachers desk in Fukui Japan a half an hour train ride from Obama the little city that has been getting all the hype. I am going to go drink right after school.
Change has never felt this great. History was made and I love it!

Well, according to CBS news tonight with Couric, news leaking from the campaign gives a long list of MEN being considered for key positions in the cabinet. http://tinyurl.com/6fu2nn

Obama, please prove me wrong here! I am really begging you.

Today is a good day for America. If you didn't listen to his entire acceptance speech, do it. If you heard it the first time, listen to it again. Those are golden words, y'all!

Oh god I am so happy! I was nearly crying with joy and I definitely did a happy Obama dance all around the dorm. I called up my mom and dad and uncles and we were all celebrating! It was amazing. I voted for the first time in this election and I am so excited that my vote counted towards something.

Then, of course, a buzzkill came in (disgruntled McCain supporter), making nasty and extremely racist comments. Such as he's going to get assassinated before the year is out, that all those "stupid poor" people in the Detroit ghettos are going to take over now and that his dad called him, saying "Turn on the TV, there are going to be a lot of happy n*ggers tonight!" (laughing as he quotes this, of course). *insert inarticulate rage here* The only thing keeping me from strangling him is that it wouldn't help anything. Bastard.

When they called it for Obama, I was so ecstatic I was shaking.

My first presidential election, and it was one like this.

Yes, we can indeed.

From me here in South Africa - congratulations America! There are many, many people all over the world who share in your joy today.

Let me also say that I think that sites like Feministing made a positive difference in this election. You exposed the lies and looked at issues critically - you should be proud of yourselves.

Sisters of the US of A, you rock! I am a Canadian feminist activist, mother and poet who has been working since the Reagan years to make this world a better place.

You must know that we in Canada are thrilled that you have elected Barack Obama to lead you through the taking back of your country from those whose hearts are filled with anger and greed. Congratulations! And thank you! Our continent and our world needed this.

You have much hard work ahead of you, I know, but for now, enjoy celebrating the opportunity your hard work has already given you. And know that your sisters to the north are with you on the journey.

Peace. Love. Hope.

alright! I feel so much better about coming back to the US in a few weeks! all the american students here were running out of the houses yelling!

I am loving it!

F John McCain and his sexist bullcrap. STUPID old man. He's a stupid farming c*nt with a constantly pregnant cavewoman for a vice!

May they now crawl into their graves with shame and rot there forever.

I hear that you hate McCain, and so do I. But you know what I don't hate? My cunt. In fact, I like it a lot, and when I see it used as an insult to describe people as hateful and dangerous as John McCain, it makes me kind of angry and really sad. Call him a piece of shit, call him an asshole, but please don't call him female anatomy. That only degrades us more.

America! Congrats from Denmark, Europe! You did it, you freaking did it!
Woke up this morning, turned on the tv first thing and sat in tears watching Obama saying "This is our moment, this is our time" ... then looked over at my son, 19 months old, and I cried some more, because this means so much for me, for him, for our future. God bless Obama and America. And God bless you all for voting for him!

YAY! Well done, all of you!

I didn't vote today because I live 10,000 miles away, and am an Australian citizen (have been since birth), but the world is so happy. People were grinning; I made people's day, week, month, year telling them that it was over, that Obama had won.

THANK YOU. From the rest of the world. Everyone who voted, thank you, thank you, thank you. I feel like he is my leader too.

I woke up at four to check the news (I'm in England currently), and I've been weepy ever since. I wish I could be at home celebrating; even though my state, SC, went red, my district was actually democratic! I'm so, so happy, and I look forward to the next four years with bated breath. I want to be proud of my country again.

In your face republicans!

I keep wanting to pinch myself! WE even won FLORIDA!

Living in NW Florida, it's honestly over 90% McCain. It's so good to see my own state win. It was unbelievable when he won the Presidency.

Speechless!

For the first time I can sing the "America, fuck yeah!" song without any hint of irony or sarcasm!!

I have become generally pretty cynical when it comes to politics, but tonight I found myself in awe of this person and his potential (and the potential of the American people).

An amazing historical moment watched around the globe - we were GLUED to the news websites here in New Zealand. Congratulations!

I am Dutch. The Netherlands are a country that owes much of its current prosperity to the USA and the Marshall aid. The foreign policy of the USA of the past 60 years has shaped my country, probably more than US people realise. The popular culture, accessible here through are Dutch networks, have shaped are culture. The Netherlands have, for as long as I've known, always followed the US.

I've grown up knowing that to be the case, and knowing that to be 'right'. One only had to look at the DDR (East Germany) to know that things could have been very different. For the past decade however, my personal relationship with the US soured. The gratitude that I was raised with became much like the gratitude you feel for a parent figure that you owe much to, but sadly cannot agree with anymore. Part of growing up means relinquishing a world view that is dichotonous: right vs. wrong, west vs. east, US vs. USSR.

Today, to me you have changed. You have become a country that yet again leads by example, rather than force. You have much to do, this is true, but you shown me today, that the world cán change.

Thank you for that.

I am currently traveling around the world for a year - I watched the election from Singapore. Half a world away, I feel like I am more of an American on this day than any I have spent on US soil.

I believe in our future, I believe in Americans and I believe in my president-elect. Today, I can't wait to come home.

Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti - let peace prevail!

From North Yorkshire, England: Unbelievable leap of faith and revolutionary hope. USA, all the alternative way!

I was elated! And then I saw how many of the disgusting ballot measures passed--affirmative action banned in Nebraska; same-sex couples adopting in Arkansas; same-sex marriage in Arizona, Florida and possibly California. The thing that puzzles me is that in some of these states, we won on the abortion bans. I'm up and down.

It happened, it really did! I can finally exhale after holding my breath and hoping, dreaming all these months!

It's been a long time coming.

My roommates and I drank wine and sat and watched all the coverage, and we were on Comedy Central when the announcement was made. We couldn't believe it, flipped to CNN, saw that it was real, and immediately started crying. I'm still in disbelief - the abortion restrictions and bans failing AND Obama getting elected? It's too amazing to be true!!!

Guys! Last night I dreamt that Obama won the presidency and... oh right! He did win the presidency! We saw history made last night! YES WE CAN!

P.S. I really did dream that. Freaky huh?

It's about time that this country finally woke up and chose the person who is best fit for the job. I got chills last night watching him speak realizing that I am alive and witnessed an historic moment in this nation. I know that we still have a long way to go but I believe Obama can take us there!

And what a good morning it is. I am so proud of my country. YES WE DID!!!

I'm so so happy that Obama won, and I'm not even American! Now for a poor, female or gay president and we'll be starting to get somewhere . . .

I was in Grant Park last night for the speech, and it was unreal. I've been to other big Chicago events before like the 4th of July or concerts or whatever, and I have never seen my city so excited, so respectful of one another and public property, and so lovingly united across lines of age, race, and neighborhood. If this is what one night of an Obama presidency brings Chicago, I can't wait to see what 8 years of an Obama presidency brings the world!

I weep every time I see it on tv. We worked for this. I'm a student, I made calls and knocked on doors and volunteered...I am so happy and tired and a tad hungover :)

I went on the most awesome, epic, spontaneous rally-parade-thing around Berkeley last night.

The cops blocked off the streets and redirected traffic while hundreds, at least a thousand, students and residents marched around following some random guy who had a flag and a whistle. We were walking in the middle of the street, cheering, chanting "OBAMA", holding signs, climbing up street signs (!), climbing all over the UC Berkeley campus. We even started singing the Star Spangled Banner, and there was a live band somewhere. And it was going strong for HOURS. I LOVE Berkeley!
