[0+] Author Profile Page Jolynn replied to Jolynn :

Nevermind found it. Who was projected to win?

These early tallies are scaring me shitless. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

This is my very first post to Feministing. What a night to make a first post!

The initial numbers scared me, but I just ran around my house squealing and dancing. 103 for Obama 34 McCain. I am so excited, but the race isn't over yet!!

Also, thoroughly enjoying and feeling really silly over watching you amazing ladies chat/blog.

One last story: My uni today had a giant poster for us voters to sign.. I signed my name as "Feminist Voters FTW (for the win)!"

I'm at home supposed to be working on thesis stuff but I'm too excited about the election...
ABC says Massachusetts in the last 8 elections is the Most Democratic State. Soooo happy I moved back here from AZ. I love this liberal state.

The lady at the election office asked me if I wanted to drop my own ballot into the box or if she wanted her to do it for me. My first time voting and I dropped my own ballot in. It seemed pretty powerful to me somehow, it being my first election and all.

[0+] Author Profile Page iHeartSanrio said:

Er, I meant *I wanted*. Bad grammar.

I didn't get an I Voted sticker either. Disenfranchisement!

I almost caused anarchy at my polling place! Voted on an old school lever machine - you pull the lever to the right and the curtains close. I pulled on my lever. Wouldn't budge. I thought I was being a wuss, so I pulled the thing like mad. Still didn't budge - but the entire voting booth started to slide and roll in a circle. The voting inspector came running over saying it was her fault, she forgot to set it up, and she was going to get fired. (Poor thing!) I was a little overwhelmed and hardly had time to process while I was voting...

So I suppose if I don't get to vote I just start tearing down my polling place. Good to know!

And gotta say - this has been the most phenomenal, communal, tangibly excited time. If we win tonight, I will be deliriously happy. Thanks to everyone who's been involved...I feel so optimistic and full of potential right now!

I know up here the personhood amendment isn't getting much support but I checked a local poll and it's not really doing that great throughout the state either from what I can tell.

The precinct I work in Ohio had about 77% voter turnout, and that's including absentee and early voters. Yes, we were bored enough at one point to do the math.
While the morning was a clustefuck of a nightmare (our voting machines were delivered an hour late, and one precinct's ballots were delivered to another polling place), it really calmed down after that.
I also work in a highly Republican, mostly high-middle class area.

does anyone know where we can look at Props being voted on??

[0+] Author Profile Page kelseyfro7 replied to silly_feminist :

You can look at the individual states on msnbc.com. Click on the state, and underneath, or to the side, you can look at the individual measures.

BBC UK is refusing to call Obama as President in case they jinx it! 200 to 90

If Amendment 2 passes in Florida, which it looks like it will, how can we overturn it later?

they just talked about Obama being at home with his family...and I burst into tears.

CNN basically just said that it's impossible for McCain to win. I'm not going to celebrate yet, but I am more hopeful than I was this morning.

BBC UK reporting FL 60% reported and 51% to Obama

One of the other good things about this election, besides the possibility of having Obama for our president, is that it shows the Democrats that they need to campaign in all the states and stop acting like we can't convince anyone in a red state. (Thanks, Howard Dean!)

Lissette,
Federally?

This might not make me popular, but I think that state constitution amendments are SUPER dangerous and rarely a good thing. If you're from FL you remember the bullet train, and we don't have a bullet train, right? I just don't like them.

"I think that state constitution amendments are SUPER dangerous and rarely a good thing."

It's a bad thing if states are more restrictive, e.g., explicitly against choice. It's a good thing if states are more liberal, e.g., explicitly recognizing rights of same sex couples or recognizing the equality of the sexes.

[0+] Author Profile Page Amanda_Stein said:

Does anyone know if there's a site that follows all results of an election? I'm curious how all my local races are turning out...

Check out my link above. It doesn't have any ballot initiatives but it does have all of the candidates.

[0+] Author Profile Page Amanda_Stein replied to wax_ghost :

Thanks!

No problem. :)

That's the problem "A male", FL right now, at something like 66% of the precints coming in, has voted to "define" a marriage as a man and woman by 62%. :(

Truth of the matter is that this screws over hetero couples as well, and the wordage on the ballot was very misleading. If you didn't do your research, it would have lead you to vote yes to it.

Then I'm sorry it turned out that way in Florida. Hawaii is a pretty liberal state and Republican governor notwithstanding, has a tradition of being Democrat.

My point is, would people be against states having the power to create their own laws, if for example, they decided to go further than Congress, the Supreme Court or President have been willing, and e.g., explicitly recognized same sex marriage, or explicitly put equality of the sexes into law? Or is it only bad when they make decisions you do not agree with?

Do you believe that the federal government knows what is best for your state or your local community (when deciding on behalf of the entire nation), or should locals and local government who know their own situation have a hand in deciding that for themselves? For example, ethnic Hawaiians are not recognized as native Americans despite their history and needs, and they are not accorded the same kinds of rights. It has been necessary for the state of Hawaii to work for Hawaiians, as limited as those measures have been, because Congress and Presidents won't address the issues on the federal level. I wouldn't expect people in Washington to understand or agree, but in the state of Hawaii, the ethnic Hawaiian community faces challenges similar to those faced by African Americans in inner cities, and they need to be addressed.

If you believe locals and local government have the right to make decisions for themselves, you need to understand they may also sometimes make decisions you do not agree with.

Amanda_Stein, CNN.com is doing a pretty good job of it.

Thanks Lissette! :)

Any word from South Dakota?????

MSNBC just called South Dakota for McCain

Can we talk about Nancy Pelosi for a second? First female speaker of the house, and with all of the seats the dems are projected to win, she is by far the most powerful woman (and perhaps person) in American government. That feels awesome.

It is fab. We've come a long way! BTW, anyone watch Iron Jawed Angels on HBO? I just watched and it's awesome! I love women's history!

I know...there was a Republican (can't remember who..Michael something) that was saying Pelosi would be more powerful than Obama in terms of what our government would be able to do. I'm proud on all fronts.

WOOHOO! OOOOOOoooooobaMA!

I'm dancing around my house.

This is amazing! Old white misogynists no longer control the White House! We don't just have a black president, it's a younger man, and one that actually seems to respect his wife.

Can't wait to see the next four years unfold!

I lived through history!

I don't know. It's basically been banned in Florida. :|

We need to find a way to overturn this. It needs to be changed....

I'll be attempting a Prop 8 (& any other ballot measures folks want to talk about) over at Little Lambs Eat Ivy starting at midnight.

I feel like an Ewok!

"Yub-yub" means "bye-bye Republicans!
