i'm a TA and we definitely showed this film to our students this past week and i posted this exact clip on my facebook yesterday! after watching it, how can you not go vote?
Gah! That song was written in 1935! Is it too much to ask for at least a semblance of historical accuracy in historical movies? You might as well have suffragettes singing, "We Will Rock You!"
I'm glad the movie was made, but geez! What's wrong with finding something they actually might have sung?
I believe the song was written in 1907. However, sometimes directors will choose to use references (through music, art, etc.) that are anacronistic for the purpose of making a connection between a historic struggle and the ongoing parallels from other times.
Oh my God, that was awful. I have never seen this movie!
um, trigger warning!!!!!
Thank you for showing us this clip. This movie always reminds me of who fought for my rights. As a California voter, I voted no on Props 4 and 8 today!
Just FYI - the Carter Family did release an album in 1935 with the song "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." However, this was adapted from a song written by Aba R. Habershon. It wouldn't surprise me if the lyrics to this folk song have been around and "singing" longer than 1935.
God I love that movie. Gets me every time.
Floodgates open. Get my tissues.
So many women on this planet still have no voice. We can't forget that, ever, until all of them can vote for and change their futures too.
FYI this site says 1907 for the lyrics of Will the Circle Be Unbroken.
Powerful scene.
I still need to see this in its entirety.
I talked to my daughter about the struggles women and people of color have faced to have the right to vote when we were on the way to the polls this morining.
wait- i dont know this movie and this didnt make any sense to me. can someone explain whats going on?
I can't actually see the video, because embedded YouTube vids aren't working for me today, for some reason, but I think I know what scene this is from the comments. So, someone else please correct me if I've got it all wrong.
The women are imprisoned on trumped up charges for having the gall to picket the White House for the right to vote during World War I. They went on hunger strike in prison to protest their sentences and were subject to brutal forced feeding, inhumane conditions in solitary confinement, etc. The press attention eventually got them released, I think. This is, to the best of my knowledge, historically accurate.
I just saw this movie yesterday (it's been on my netflix and had "very long wait" next to it for about a month")... it was amazing! Not that I take voting for granted, but it made me feel a little warmer inside when I think about voting today.
I watched this movie just a week ago and realized how much I take for granted. I wore a yellow rose on election day to show my gratitude to the women who suffered and sacrificed for me to have the vote.
(I also did poll watching and canvassing for Obama starting at 4am yesterday and I signed up for camp wellstone today. One more feminist activist!)
On another movie accuracy point, in the end when the Tennesse rep votes for suffrage he gets hugged and handed a yellow rose to replace his red one. In real life he was chased out the window..
