I wish Comedy Central would fix their code so that Linux users could watch videos online. (Actually, I just wish Flash would stop being an evil empire and embrace the world of open source. Ha, yeah right.)

transcript please?

I really wish there's subtitles available.

This was awesome - I saw it last night and fell even more in love with Sam Bee.

Canadians can see the clip on The Comedy Network website. It comes 7 minutes into clip 1 of 4 of the October 28 Daily Show.

Okay, I was really enjoying the clip, but the last exchange made me howl with laughter.

"Well thank you very much Sam."
"Well, fuck you John."

For Brown Trash Punk:

Theres some talk about McCain forgetting the names of people who endorsed him, but then it moves on to when, at the last debate, McCain blathered about "pro-abortion" and put "women's health" in air quotes.

Jon Stewart: *stunned silence*
Sam Bee: I'm sorry, Jon. May I?
JS: Sam Bee! Thank you! I'd be honored!
SB: Thank you Jon. And thank you John McCain for finally exposing the seedy underbelly of the women's "health" scam. Let's face it, women love abortions and we'll do anything to get one. The later the better. "Hemmorages," severe "uterine infections," "dying," blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And while we're at it, enough with the whining about "rape," "incest," and "incest rape." We're on to you, ladies. Those aren't a golden ticket to the abortion factory, okay?
JS: That seems a little harsh.
SB: *sarcastically* Oh. I'm sorry, ma'am. Why don't you strap on a pair, okay? Listen, John McCain has finally put the concerns of women where they belong, in derisive air quotes. And this trancends politics, Jon. Reasonable people can disagree about abortion but still agree on the unimportance of women's health.
JS: You don't think that position might alienate some women?
SB: No. Not at all. And I'm sure that if John McCain was raped and had a baby growing in his penis, he would want it discussed at the same level of abstraction: without concern for his specific "life" or "penis."
JS: Alright. Well, thank you very much Sam.
SB: Well, fuck you Jon.

I got so excited when I saw this last night! I'm psyched that The Daily Show called out McCain on his bs. I'd love to tell him where he can stick his air quotes.

I pray that Tina Fey, Samantha Bee, and Sarah Haskins get together somewhere in front of a camera and make fun of McCain and Palin.

"Dick Fingers"

Generally, this Comedy Central piece is great. Bee is awesome. However, there actually is a sexist (anti-male) comment embedded in the piece. Stewart refers to McCain's air quotes as "Dick fingers". Not cool, Stewart. Is it really appropriate to use the word “dick” to imply that something is negative?

While it is true, OF COURSE, that McCain's air quoting was TOTALLY unacceptable, unpleasant and unappealing, to use the word "dick" to broadcast that notion of unpleasantness IS very sexist. Wholly unacceptable. Stewart is propagating that practice in our language of using the word “dick” to imply negativity. “that guy is a dick”, “you’re such a dick”. All of these usages give the impression that the “dick” is negative. That usage is sexism against males. It’s very sexist and really has to be shed by our society. It reminds me of how people will say “she’s a bitch” or “he’s a dick”. Both are unacceptable and sexist. This Stewart case is no different.

What bothered me even more almost was when I noticed someone on this blog say that they “LOVED” that particular Stewart quote of “dick fingers”. THAT surprised me. On a blog with anti-sexist principles, I was surprised that that post was not removed by the monitors. Sexism is not acceptable, even when directed at men. When a post like that is allowed to remain, I get the impression that there is a tolerance for anti male sexism.

@sky,
Unfortunately, "dick" (regular quotes, not scare quotes) is simply in much wider usage, with men and women, than "douche," which would have been just as funny. And for some reason network censors just aren't as forgiving of "asshole," which both men and women sport.
That said, no matter how derogatory "dick" may be, it is considered by most men to be a mild insult at worst. It's a sweet pat on the head compared to to the vitriol of "cunt," for which there is no male equivalent.
So, I'm all for substituting "douche" for "dick" and have no objection to people pointing out how "dick" is a sexually specific anatomical insult, but when people go off the deep end about it, and start screaming "hypocrisy" I get the song "Cry Me a River" stuck in my head.

@ZoBabe

I'm glad you agree with me that a common usage of the word "dick" is a sexist one, against men. I am NOT glad that you thought it necessary to ridicule my criticism of "dick" as sexist, though. Is it really necessary to ridicule me for pointing out sexism against men? Would you think it appropriate if someone were to ridicule the claim that sexism against women exists? Of course not. You should be equally respectful when someone points out sexism against men. The way your behaving is pretty hypocritical and actually gives a sexist, anti male impression. Not cool, ZoBabe.

Clearly a comedy show using the word "dick" is far more pressing an issue than the possible future president deriding women's health. Don't you stomping manhaters know anything? Geesh.

@nanobot

you too choose to deride sexism against men rather acknowledge it. that's the same technique many men have used throughout history in order to propagate sexism against women. and here you are using it to ridicule sexism levied against men. you seem to wield the same poison as those you decry. shame on you. you should instead open your mind and your heart and acknowledge that there are occasions, such as this one, where sexism IS levied against men. even if the context includes heavy sexism against women by McCain, you needn't fear or shun fairness. In the end, you will benefit yourself by being fair.

@sky:
I wasn't ridiculing you for pointing it out, I was ridiculing the fact that it took you three paragraphs to do it.

Oh. Weirdly, I interpreted "dick fingers" differently. Like, when the index and middle finger are displayed together, they are fused into a single, penis-width finger. Now that I review this idea, I can see that I was probably wrong. Oops!

@ZoBabe

Oh, now I understand your position, ZoBabe. Now it makes total sense. Ya, I do the same thing as you. Every time I read a posting where someone points out an injustice and an instance of sexism, I do the same thing as you. If I agree that the instance was unjust and sexist but I think that their post was too many paragraphs long, I will totally go ahead and post a ridicule of their post, of its length, rather than support their criticism of sexism. Ya, I’m with you 100%. Now I see what you mean. Ya, you’re totally fair and credible and intolerant of all forms of sexism. Glad that you’re against all forms of sexism. You’re such a model of principle.

You know there was someone on another posting who pointed out something unjust and sexist, but their post was like 3 or 4 paragraphs. I totally agreed with their issue, but the length of their post was, like, unbearable. So I posted a response to their post and ridiculed them rather than support their fair criticism of sexism. I felt so good and fair in doing that. Thanks for demonstrating such good, fair, and loving principles, ZoBabe. I'm glad that you're a member here.

@sky

LOL - You're so obviously trolling, but just for fun let me address your "fair criticism of sexism." Obviously, a simple "Hey, dick is sexist too." would have been perfectly sufficient.

But no, you go on to rail against the hypocrisy of feminists, and pull a big, mopey "So, I guess sexism is okay if men are the target? [sniff] [sniff]."

So, my comment about number of paragraphs was, in fact, an allusion to the long winded, over-hurt concern troll style of comment, not the actual number of paragraphs, nor that there is anything wrong with pointing out the sex-specific nature of the insult "dick."

Sorry that went over your head.

@ZoBabe

You know what? If you derive some pleasure from ridiculing the length of my oh-so-long 3-paragraph comment and if you derive some pleasure from labeling me a troll for engaging in civil, progressive conversation, I am okay with that. I have to assume that fair readers will make their own judgments about who’s the real troll here. The most important thing here, of course, is the actual point that I made, not the word count of my posting. And given that you don’t seem to have a problem with the ACTUAL POINT that I made, I am totally fine with the situation we find ourselves in. After all, it is the fight against sexism that is the most important thing here, not the length of one’s oh-so-long 3-paragraph posting. If I have to suffer some silly, immature ridicule for some odd reason, that is not a big deal.

In fact, if every fight against sexism elicited the same reaction as the one you expressed and this same outcome, I still think the world would be a better place that it is now. Why? Because, as I said, you did not object to the content of my comment, only to its oh-so-long 3-paragraph length. This is a situation I can live with. (Though I am still perplexed why you had to insert an unnecessary unpleasantness and immaturity.)
